3260033 No.3260033 [Reply] [Original]

A thread for the science and study of drawing anime and its aesthetics. Users of this thread are encouraged to participate and learn with each other; share feedback, resources, and discuss just how to fucking draw anime. Everyone, lets learn together!

>Is this /alt/?
No. A thread official FAQ is pending.
>this is the successor of the 'anime study thread'
yes and no

Continuing off with the last thread, why not do exercises focusing on drawing the head and faces, and in a variety of different angles.

I'd like to say that I'm NOT the OP as the last few threads, but I liked the concept and feel like /alt/ is not really the place for a more dedicated approach towards specifically anime style art. I think it'd be great if we can get the ball rolling and hopefully get work done. I feel like we should try compiling a list of useful and appropriate tutorials. As things are now, if you haven't ever tried it out, why not take a look at pixiv's tutorial page?

>> No.3260042

im not op , but if a mod decides to delete this thread at least say why , the last two threads got deleted and as far as i know it didn't violate any rule so why . if the reason is because theres already a similar thread (alt) that shit is nothing but namefags and circlejerking and rarely you get any advice

>> No.3260048

>>3260042
The thing that bugs me most about /alt/ is the fact that it's not dedicated to anime, and I assume that there's quite a lot of people interested in studying and working on anime style stuff specifically, myself included. You can't really get that done there in /alt/.

Also, started working on a similar character sheet, will post as I progress through it.

But why'd they delete the old threads though? That's what I want to know since it wasn't shitposty at all, and people were trying to get stuff done. A way better thread than the one bitching about anime girls in art galleries or the dude who supposedly paid for his comission upfront and then didn't get what he wanted, all while never posting anything, and just shitposting. Anyways, let's try not to let this derail the thread.

I want to read manga that merges styles from Japan, America, and Europe... I thought North African history would help bridge the gap, ironically. I'd like to throw Tezuka's cat from 'Queen of Sex' into Philip Mackie's drama just to see what the interplay would be.

Anyway, what sort of mouth should the woman in the left-hand side have? This has been bugging me for some time.

The problem is OVERTHINKING.

Its when you know the style calls for a thin neck, and you exaggerate because in your head, you keep thinking, it has to be thin, it has to be thin. The neck you drew is already thin. It doesn't take much.

You just need to get out of the "What I think I see" mentality to "What I actually see" which is why Keys to drawing / drawing on the right side of the brain is recommended first even before loomis.
And yes they do apply to anime style drawings.

As for manga that merges styles, it's not really a big thing from what I know. What Japan does is take things and adapt it to its own, so you'll see more like styles adapted to more anime style stuff. Honestly, something I like about anime style shit is how things are adapted to look anime as opposed to the other way around.

But one of the last things they can do right. Mark Crilley to this day can't draw convincing anime eyes. The moment you see a cropped Mark Crilley drawing of anime eyes, you instantly know they were drawn by a western hobbyist trying to emulate anime.

They're arguably the hardest part of the style, and as the other anon said, not easy for westerners to get down. It's not just about sizing, but placement as well. Westerners tend to get fucked over by where the eyes are placed, since they tend to place them more centered than in anime. Their shape too throws people off, and there's a fine line between too much detail and lack of it.

That's what they were talking about. Even when imitating another artist's style you're using their work as reference, and "draw what you actually see" applies just the same. There are still proportions and guidelines/construction lines that can be drawn between landmarks. It's enough that when double checked someone who's using an anime picture as reference can still realize a neck is not as thin as they thought, eyes are not as big as they thought, etc. Stylized work can still be analyzed in an objective way like that.

Seeing a few people redrawing that anon's R. Mika girl reminded me of something I wanted to try that I think would be a good exercise. Taking real people and trying to draw them in an anime style. IMO a lot of the best anime artists have a good understanding of this and are able to use real faces to add character to their work. Akira and Dragonball are good examples of this imo. I think it could be really helpful to see how real forms can be translated since that's literally what stylizing is.

From top right to bottom left.

It usually indicates a right hander who doesn't draw with his arm but rests his hands and mostly uses his wrist and fingers to push the pen.

Sometimes small tablets are the cause of this unconscious skewing also as the drawing surface is small they feel they don't need to draw with the arm.

I like Soejima's (Persona, etc.) art style a lot, but whenever I try to copy it, my drawings turn out crummy. The eyes are so hard to copy, and I've noticed I have to put the nose lower than I usually do. Any advice?

I mean it need only serve to give a general idea of what the artist intended to do with their caricature, it doesn't have to be treated as gospel. People don't even have to specifically aim for one of the styles on it. It'd be nice though to be able to let people know what they're going for instead of having to explain it and hope people get it, and that would help people critique more effectively. One of the worst problems I see all the time in the Alt thread is people giving critiques that don't account for what style a drawing is aiming for. Which is not to say 'muh style', but it does make a difference if someone's trying to add defined muscles to a chibi drawing.

If everyone uses the same reference it’s just going to devolve into another ”draw my OC in your style!” thread. I think it’d be more interesting if you had to roll/pick a random reference and a random style of anime (80s, Toriyama, K-On, One, Bkub etc.) and do your best. Being forced to adapt to an art style would also force you to actually study it, which is what this thread is about.

The best advice to find the root of the problem and apply a solution for that and that is construction.

Once you get a few landmarks going, it is easier to find where the start of a line should be and the end of the line, allowing one fell swoop of the pen.

I like the idea of rolling a style to have to imitate, but I don't think there's anything wrong with everyone using the same photo. Unlike the draw my oc in your style thing, it's a photo of an actual person, just like in the beginner thread. It's a model. I guess maybe someone in the world could consider it their oc but it's probably about as neutral as you can get. And I think the benefits of having a standard base for critiquing everyone's drawing outweighs the need to set people's minds at ease that they might be drawing someone else's homework or something. It might be good to have several references to choose from though, so people who feel like they really need to improve at drawing either gender for example could work on that even while practicing this.

This is why westerners can't anime. I studied eyes out the ass and got them down fine, realistically. But when trying my hand at anime, it's hard to move into the style. If you have zero art experience and just want to draw anime exclusively, forego /ic/'s meme advice and just study anime and draw things like they do, not like how it looks. Because 100% of the time, it trips up westerners, and has them stuck in their distinctive style.

There is no drawing "real" eyes. When people say realistic art, they are only talking about a style.

>You will only end up with symbol drawing if you only study anime.
People attempting to draw realistic art are just as susceptible to symbol drawing. There are many people on this board who look at a reference and attempt to draw the things they can name instead of the shapes they see. This leads to flat drawings with extremely sharp noses and eyes. Even worse, they'll use construction to avoid having to see. This is not the fault of realism, this is because the artist is not trusting their eyes.

>It is quite clear to see that the chicken scratching is due to trying to find the lines they want.
No, the issue with chicken scratching is specifically that the artist is not trying to find the lines he or she wants. That's what chicken scratching is. The artist is afraid to look for the line, so instead of drawing and examining multiple restatements, they try every feasible line at the same time and hope that the noise will approximate the correct line. They are deliberately avoiding finding the line.

>The best advice to find the root of the problem and apply a solution for that and that is construction.

It's honestly better to just copy photos (not mindlessly, but even that would get you further than studying the structures/planes of realism). You can not "symbol draw" a style anyways, that makes no sense. You either copied it right or you didn't. I will say that planes and structure are good for making sure everything is correctly facing the right direction (perspective), but that's not something to worry about when you can't even draw or copy.

>> No.3261297

>>3261284
To me, it sounds like you're saying people should prioritize construction and perspective, but those should always be second to seeing. It is not trying to find the line. When people chicken scratch, they either rapidly draw extremely short lines as if they're shading or trace over the same line over and over. When they are done, they cannot even point out which line is the correct one. They cannot tidy up. Anime is anything that derives from Japanese Animation. It's basically synonymous with style since most people don't really care about Japanese artists that don't do anime. This one for instance has anime features, so I would say it is anime. Just look at how the facial structure is done as well as the hair. There's other stuff too, but you wouldn't mistake it for some model drawing. However, it doesn't really matter if you define it anime or not because it's like I said before synonymous with style, it's just how they drew it.

Yes, chicken scratching works to some extent, but it's a poor illusion and it's a crutch for the artist.
>skill
It's not an issue of skill. It's a choice. All they have to do is attempt to draw a correct line and restate until it's right. The work is almost identical to chicken scratching, but they have to take the time to judge their lines before they restate.

No, I don't expect him to know if the line is good enough or not every time, but if he can't tell, why restate? If he draws an obviously wrong line, then he should restate. If after drawing another part of the picture he realizes that an earlier line is wrong, then he should restate the old line. I'm not upset with anyone. I'm frustrated because this is not a matter of skill or practice, but you're acting as if it is. I don't expect him to get every line right in a few tries. I think the main reason people chicken scratch is because they're afraid their drawings look flat or plain without the noise, but that's not true. The best part of his drawing is probably the hair. Despite having many restatements, it still looks better than the head, neck, or torso.

>Did you just want the to clean it up, after finding the correct line? Then just tell them to go over with a kneaded eraser and draw the line in one go.
This takes us back to what I said earlier. He may have drawn the right line, but he can't find it. Instead of drawing dozens of lines and trying to carve a correct line out with an eraser, it would be far easier to slow down and draw slower.

I'm using SAI.
My linework always looks awful, and it's not only my lack of skill, it has something to do with the way brushes are configured I guess, or maybe the stabilizer tool, honestly I can't tell.
Also, I have no idea of what tools to use for shading, and coloring is a pain in the ass because there are small spots that the magic wand tool doesn't reach.

I'm all for learning brush configuration and technical tools, but that's not what's giving him the actual trouble. He's just looking at the wrong side of the coin

I know this kind of thing has been parroted to death by krugers and crabs, but it really doesn't matter what brush this particular picture is drawn in, it really will not improve it by any significant measure

Focus back on your fundamentals of gesture, figure drawing, construction and shape design.

Using a SAI circle brush with pressure set to density is good enough for this. Actually it will be better than using any fancy brushes, since it will let you focus on the drawing itself more.
