IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Is there a term for the way you which draw outlines of stuff in cartoons ? I am trying to research the different ways and thought process behind them. Loomis does cover every basic, if you read every single line and take it to heart, but forget that. First basic is to abandon lined paper. Then you go out and draw something and it can be anything as long as it's more complicated than a stickman. You draw it then you compare, does it look EXACTLY the same? If not, then you have to draw it until it is. If you see that you keep drawing something too big or too small, pick up Keys to Drawing and read a few chapters then go back to drawing. Don't do the exercises. You're here to draw.

Hmm
A lot of his likeness comes from his chin and mouth area, the part that gives him his youthful vibe.
His chin is more recessed, which in turn changes the appearance of the lips. You flattened his nose.

Everything below the eyes you decided to protrude, flatten, and or elongate.

I know it's a color study, but getting down the facial structure is kind of key for that. For example, you cut off his cheekbone in half for some reason, so only half the highlight and the texture shows on his face on your painting which changes the colors a lot. You also didn't capture the redness of his face (think of blood coming near the surface of his skin), but rather made him look more tanned. The model is probably wearing makeup.

Just keep fiddling with it, you'll get it eventually. The proportions can be a quick fix with the liquify tool so you can focus on your colors more.

I've seen some artists first do a black and white version of a painting, and then sort of colorize that in order to get a final color illustration.

I think this methodology might help me because it will be probably easier to first learn to get only value right, and then change the saturation and hue on that, than try to get all 3 at the same time right.

I'm curious.
Are there any drawbacks to doing this? I'm guessing it might be more time consuming, but maybe it's not the case.
Are there any advantages, other than the one I mentioned about being able to get one of the three elements right and then being able to focus on the other two (if that even makes sense)?
Also, how is this method called, so that I can find specific tutorials on it?

>> No.3254613

I'm not sure, but this thread seemed like the best place to ask. I recently began learning to draw and so far have only done some really basic exercises to work on and develop some fundamentals. The thing is, it's honestly kind of boring at this stage. My question is: would carrying around a sketchbook and trying to draw random things I see help improve my drawing or would it just reinforce poor technique?

huge improvement, what i would suggest you working on now is trying to identify what you see as blocks and forms, trying to see shapes in what you're drawing. esp with the hair, i see you trying to think of it as bigger shapes instead of strand by strand, and i think that's where you need to keep improving on.

Small head and arms.

Make neck a little longer and thicker, then portion the head. Also arms should reach about middle thigh (shoulder to tip of finger). And don’t hide an arm, looks unnatural if it’s a front view.

Also add actual knees and work on hands. You’re not drawing trump, make her hands bigger.

Well, good news is this thread is great for people starting from 0 because everybody wants to help people as long as they feel they are better than them.

Looks like you are having a lot of trouble drawing what you see, which is perfectly normal for people that haven't been drawing since gradeschool. If you're prepared for the grind, I suggest trying that same exercise again. Try it a few times for good measure and be sure to REALLY REALLY LOOK at the angles of each line and how they connect. Take an hour break or so between each attempt. Post results and never give up even when you think you've stagnated.

Draw a lot of still life to get better at seeing more accurately, then work your way up to people. You're making good progress, keep the ball rolling.

Your shadows that close should be the darkest. You have them barely a couple of values darker than the midtones in the middleground, in the distance. In bright sun like that you'll have almost blown out highlights and deep, dark shadows, as the sun is directly overhead - the lighter values of the distance are from the atmosphere and glare.

This is where reference comes into play - it's not the scene you're drawing, but the conditions are the same. Not how the background values lighter than the shadows in the foreground.

If color has 3 main components: hue, saturation and value, you can "take away" the hue and saturation in programs like Photoshop by setting the saturation to 0, which lets you focus on value.

That's too bad. May I ask why?

I tried to do it myself and I feel like I got close, but for some reason the yellows won't do it. It sort of works for most other colors.

Pic related:
1) Original image. Just some random photo.
2) 2 layers: on top, the original image set to color mode. On bottom, 50% brightness mid gray. It seems to translate most colors and hues rather well, except for yellows, which turn greenish.
3) 2 layers: on top, same as before. On bottom, original image set to 0% saturation. It looks sort of similar to the original image, but the lack of yellows really fucks it up.

If the color mode layer retained the yellow this would be possible. Is there any way to achieve it?

would recommend lots of control exercises, straight lines, elipses, arcs, pattern squares, drawing circles from the shoulder, do that along with still lifes, contour line drawings, negative space drawings, mostly somewhat boring stuff

after that learn shading & perspective, learn how shadows and light work, different kinds of lighting (soft vs direct, soft & occlusion shadows)

eventually move into figure drawing and then anatomy, everything before this requires at least a basic understanding of the above, but you'll get better at the things above while learning how to do this stuff (passive practice)

probably color after that

The biggest step forward I had starting out was really learning to see, learn to measure with your pencil too, everything else kind of builds off those basic observation skills so I'd encourage you to really really train your eyes. Also if you dedicate some time to it, do it every day, you'll see yourself improve really fast

There's good resources in the artbook threads, would reccommend proko as well as ctrl paint, also there's lots of dicks on this board but sometimes you'll get a good critique. Gl anons

Had a work in progress I was very unhappy with, decided to scrap it, and got some critiques out of it too. I tried doing photo refs and I am hoping the anatomy looks better. I also did like a rough lighting test thing, does it look right at all? This is just a sketch before I do line art. Thank you to anyone that replies.

Other anons may disagree, but it's as philosophical as it is technical. It's a combination of cute(helpless) and sexual for the most part. Make a vision board of your favorite artists and identify aspects such as shape language, gesture, line, cartoonist's shorthand facial features and how exactly they are lies, proportion, angles v. curves, etc that support one of those aesthetic roots. You start to find patterns and discover what exactly you like.

Art styles like anime (a lot of anime has their own unique art styles and methods)
all come from an understanding of the basics
you don't need specifically loomis, but you still need to work and understand the fundamentals of drawing, and how shapes work to form the body.

try making longer lines. your standing poses like the top left and bottom right are really stiff and lacking in dynamism. it seems like you're doing a lot more contour drawing than gesture.

as someone else said, doing raw studies will suck the enjoyment of drawing out of you. for me I couldn't grind one thing forever, you should come up with what you think you want to learn. then find the basics of those and practice/learn those. then you'll have more stuff to practice instead of whatever book studies you have currently. i think once you get more confident lines next you can go on to rendering value. perspective is important too and then anatomy. you don't have to do these in any order but as you learn parts you might realize that you need to be stronger in other areas before you learn what you want to learn.
