IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You said you were studying value, right? This photo have at least 3 point lights in it, it can throw things off a little bit, on top of that, its a color image. You are dealing with hue and saturation on top of the value, it can be tough to take into account if you are just starting out. Maybe consider turning this into gray scale image for your first study and deal with hue and sat later?

Also you are cropping that face off that leaves out some land marks for some reason, why not draw whole head?

>> No.3250243

i dont actually know how why i didnt draw the whole head, i guess i just thought it was unnecessary.

i knew i wanted to do a speed drawing and then a drawing from imagination after the first drawing so i didnt want any extra details but if the landmarks of the head are important ill draw the whole head next time

also where can i find better face references?

Anyone use photoshop here?
Just installed it a few days ago and can't seem to figure out some basic things.

Is there any way to select pixels of a layer without having to go off the canvas to right click on that thumbnail thing on the layers panel?

I know the move tool has an auto select feature, but it doesn''t restrict my brush to whats already drawn on the layer and having to constantly leave the canvas for this is really fucking annoying.

Or maybe there's another way to only paint over pixels that are already painted in a layer?

Bonus internet points if someone can also tell me how to quickly flip only the view horizontally without actually flipping the image.

Ctrl + left click basically does the same thing as the auto-select option of the move tool. It picks the layer that the cursors pointing to on the layers menu (no marching ants).

But I found a pretty good workaround I think.
Select the layer then press the / key.

It locks that selected layers transparency so new brush strokes will not register on pixels that have no opacity.
Looks like it gives the same result as the brush-over feature in other apps.

Now if I could only figure out how to flip only the view horizontally :(

Recently decided to start using an even lighter brush so I could have cleaner lines while sketching fast and loosely. Are these gestures legible enough? I put them out real fast and hoping they're recognizable enough. The ones in the center is when I dedicate more time to them.

the first gestures... Your are no showing the longest axis. Maybe because you did it fast.

For gesture sketching it doesn't really matter.

Just do your gestures with 100% and your pen pressure set to modulate opacity.
Then once you're done and it looks good, change the entire layer to like 20% or something and draw on top of it on a new layer for your line work.

That's what I do anyway.

Only 3 of them were from reference. The rest were from imagination. I feel like my figures were too stiff so l I started working on gestures on the left and simplifying structures on the right, albeit messily.

Im not familiar with a longitudinal axis, but I've read of Loomis' method for balance. My gesture lines are fairly centered from the neck, to spine, and ect, though. I extend them as I need to after they're placed.

It just takes practice.

Try doing exercises that bypass your brains symbol-drawing system.

You have to train yourself to see an arm not as an "arm" but a 3d lump of flesh in it's current shape and orientation connected to an even bigger lump of flesh (the torso).

Deconstructing the figure into very basic 3d shapes, cylinders, cubes, ect, work wonders in this regard.

Idk if you're serious or not but what I do is just draw all the time and draw faces of different people and of my friends. The thing is though it's important to draw what you don't like to draw and i really never realized that, so it basically means I'm good at drawing these faces but it's challenging for me to draw them in perspective or in funky lighting. Always use reference but also add your own element of style and if your style sucks copy a bunch of other people's styles until they all merge and you find your own. the most important thing though is to just draw and draw a lot, but stop when you start to get frustrated because that fucks you up

Okay how do you actually draw from imagination? The sticky and Proko's video on imagination says to use construction, but that makes no sense. How can you construct something you haven't seen before or drawn before? Construction is a means of simplification of the complex forms of reality, but what about the imaginary? You can't simplify what doesn't even exist yet because you can't even begin to comprehend the complexity. How did artists of the past draw from imagination? Did they even draw from imagination? It shows they use reference a lot, so it's more like copy and pasting than imagination which is something new. Imagination must be a new and recent thing then like cartoons and anime, those don't exist in life. How did they come up with those? Not construction, so how?

>> No.3250746

you concieve of an object or being in your head
then you do the basic shapes construction
the way you draw something from your imagination is by imagining it first.
It is absolutely true that you can't drw that which you have never before seen, but if you haven't seen it you haven't imagined it either, the moment your brain comes up with an object or creature, the moment it has visualisation of what it might look like is the moment you have seen it.

Do any other Krita users hate the default brushes in Krita? I love the program and the hard work the devs put into making it, but the default brushes really leave a lot to be desired. That other open source program "Mypaint" has better default brushes to me.

The wet brushes would be great if they didn't have such an annoyingly intense blend/smudge setting with them.

Also does anyone else hate how complicated Krita's brush settings page is? I wish they would put an "simple" and "advance" option in the brush menu.

the thing is that what's called "brush" in Krita is slightly different than in PS : in PS it usually means just the shape that is being stamped on each stroke, but in Krita it's the whole brush with all its settings, including default size and opacity, and the shape setting is what I posted.

That being said, you have the right idea, but your sense of anatomy isn't at the point where you can make extreme poses like this. Notice how the body/head aren't skewed the same way as the arm, as if they exist in their own perspective.

Are you familiar with figure drawing by Anthony Ryder? A lot of what I doing draws inspiration from the way him renders. The thing is that, it is not an entirely unconscious process. Even though typically when people think about hatching they think about fast sketches, but often times, you'll need to consider the direction of the form and density of the marks in order for it to look "coherent" if that make sense.

Pencil is more forgiving than pen in terms of cross hatching, but if you want to practice just hatch marks then sometimes you have to force yourself to do it with pen.

something that always helps me is to look at the negative space around the figure, it's a lot easier to check those little shapes and they make a big difference. by negative space i mean, for example seeing if the shape made in between the arm and torso looks the same, or the shape made by the left elbow and the contour of the breast, as well as looking for things that are parallel to each other that could be used for reference, such as the top of the phone meeting the middle of the eye.
