I call this one "Morgan as Hey Arnold! and he's on the phone". Just practicing the medium and composition/color. I have a bunch of framed Morgans but most of them don't fit on the walls so I'm trying different paint application techniques without paying lots for canvas. Also trying out new things for the signature.

drew this for my uncle for Christmas. Very happy with it for my skill level, too poor for a proper gift.

Critique wise - I think I use colour too shallowly. Always picking from what's already on the canvas. Washed out. Not confident with lines.

I want to learn how to paint faces and face shapes correctly with fewer brush strokes.

For my part I'm happy with the composition. I've lost an angel announcing the dream which was getting a little smaltzy, the painter of angels, no thanks. The sketched out Joseph pose: so far so good, the background swirly clouds is top quality a tad 'a matter of life and death' though it could go either way. Mary is the glaring disappointment at the moment, her position is OK, but she is anaemic and twee. If I can give her a bit of teeth then I'm onto a winner.

Maybe you can throw some gentle bounce light on that figure there. He sort of blends into the ground because the values are too close. Also the bright light from rhe glashlight sort of creates an arrow that directs off the canvas. So if yoy put the bounce light on him it can remedy that a bit.

Yes, but with the exception of the parrot head, the level of painted detail is fairly low on most of them... so there's less dissonance but also less opportunity for interest

that being said, the parrot head is basically what i was suggesting - how the feathers you painted are all in distinct, repeated shapes with light variation. ideally a finished piece would expand on this idea and incorporate it throughout the piece.

Tips on getting more grit and texture?

The brush I used for this helps greatly for hard and soft transitions, however makes the whole thing feel blurry. How the fuck do I find balance

Don't blend your strokes as much. Use a brush with a harder edge, possibly at a lower opacity, and put your colors down with that. It can be a funky-shaped brush, but it needs to be somewhat firm.
She is GORGEOUS, by the way.
If you're going for like, glitter on the skin look, draw your speckles out with a very low opacity, and then increase the opacity/brightness of the color more as you get closer to where the light is actually hitting the surface

Still drawing with pencil and paper, i find it very hard to transition to digital with a shit $100 Wacom Bamboo tablet with no pressure sensitivity. Maybe i just need a good brush setting to overcompensate the last of pressure sensitivity. Or i should switch from photoshop to sai maybe?

Great drawing, but the figure's hands are down too low, unless you wanted a simian look to him. Foreground appears to get cut off.

the are at the foot of the peak on the left is entirely flat and moves in one direction. the peak itself is sculpted like a muffin with strange cutwounds. the colors could be ok in a cartoonish kinda of fashion, still, te cliff in the very front would be the most detailed, ground with a very different structures, as it is very near to the viewpoint (stones, sall shadows, grass, all visible at that distance). that curve on the ground in the lower right corner doesn't give any good impression of what goes on with that space.
it could all be done with these rought brush tips, but it doesn't come out in your drawing, although you've worked over quite a few spots several times.

I'm sure this is some sort of "in-between" scene before some action happens but it feels like there's too many panels for nothing happening. You could probably prune at least two of them, and maybe adjust the poses in the others slightly to make up for it.

there's a wide shot of the environment straight after the last panel, it's important to the story that you know he's putting away the fish. maybe the shot of him pulling it off the spear can go?

It's hard to say from one unfinished page but it feels a bit plain the way it is. The yellow and green seem bland together and there aren't really any other details whether in the background or on the character. The slightly shaky outlines of the character (mostly in panel 4) also make it look a bit amateurish but I wouldn't worry about that since you'll probably steady that up soon enough.
But really I'd be happy if you just varied the panel sizes and ranges of focus a bit more. Work up a rhythm to that wide shot.

I like what you have going for this guy.
Hiss head and neck seem a little large and the torso seems to be pointing too far to the side though

If you spend some more time in constriction and vary the line weight more to make the intricate sections pop more you'll be on the right track
