I'm rescinding my earlier tone - I think I was overly harsh for the jolly spirit we ought to be having this time of year.

>Name at least 5 rare books.

You have a prime example of one in this thread. I'm sure you can find more if you scour on Amazon/eBay/whathaveyou. I've scanned a handful myself on here.

From what I've come across:

1) Books that artists today haven't really heard of en masse, that can only be found through other (older) books from artists, or through interviews with older artists.

2) Books that are out of print, and you by some happenstance come across them. Some have no English translation and are in Italian/French which makes it even more interesting when you come across them.

3) Books that are out of print, and the only way to get them is to pay extortionate amounts of money.

I understand the desire for more fundie type books like Loomis/Scott Robertson/Ernest Norling and what not. Fine, scan those I don't oppose it.

It's when some new biography-tier book comes out on an artist and people are desperate for it that I don't understand.

Anons were gushing over Color like it's the next coming of Christ. Someone scanned it. Guess what? There was nothing in there that you didn't already know through Gurney's and other books on color that you already have.

So pardon me if I flip out when I sense entitlement on this board over someone scanning what they paid for.

Now, having said that - nice chunky drop coming your way on the 27th. It's not Leyendecker - it's something more useful and pretty-fucking-rare.

>Did Claude Weisbuch every publish any "how to" books?
Not to my knowledge.

There does seem to be a book of his work that someone has put together, "Weisbuch: Peintures, pastels, dessins". It could be either just his work or it could contain details of his education as well. Again, it's only in French.

Recently I did acquire Pierre-Paul Prud'hon and Eugene Carriere books (both in English!). Both mix a bit of education background with showcasing their work.

Uniformly this seems to be case among books I've read on artists - biographies that drop a gem or two in there that are interesting to keep in the back of your mind, but nowhere near the level of how-to that you'd hope for.

I have recently come across someone I should already know but alas he slipped under my radar - John Collier. Most of his how-to are on Archive.org with the exception of one. Amazon had 1 copy left of his "The Religion of an Artist" and ebay has none. I nabbed it and I might scan it for the sake of distributing it. The book was published in 1928 and it's long out of print so I think it's fair game.

It's possible he made friends with his contemporaries - other artists he attended school with, for example - who did end up writing on him and his methods or what they saw in their own books.

Do the research!.

Here we go:

I've set out to acquire the last bit of historic Vilppu recordings that he had done prior to the store being closed. Since most of you have the majority of his videos on drawing manual, anatomy, animals, et cetera, I didn't bother with those.

So instead, I obtained the Mastering Composition set of DVDs, which I'm at last glad to share with you:

https://mega.nz/#F!MrIFFJ7T!ByCenjMRTDXRYIKZk_Biew

This not only has the DVDs, but also comes with:

* The companion workbook
* The composition sketches
* The plates that he uses in the video to demonstrate his points, and
* MP3 recordings of his lectures in case you feel like listening to it during your commute.

Note that this is not the Intro to Composition series that he has on NMA - that is something else entirely.

I believe along with the videos you can already find on CGPeers, that this is it. The entire Vilppu Store collection of videos (some workbooks notwithstanding).

As before with the Famous Artists Advanced Program, I'd like to ask someone with a CGPeers account to upload it on there and start sharing it.

I was hoping this would arrive before Christmas but oh well, better late than never.

Til next time /ic/ - I'll see you with more goodies in 2018.

Depends on the book and the artist. There are artists showing every little bit of their workflow and having clear X and O near their examples which makes things easy to understand. But there are others that give in-depth explanations that you can't figure out by drawings alone especially if they don't have any sort of redlines, arrows or any clear visual signs to let you know what the fuck they're trying to explain.

To answer your question, it looks pretty bad to begin with so even if the picture you replied to were good examples I wouldn't want to study that artist

I am learning Japanese and it helps a lot. I learn a lot from these books, mainly because I went into a bunch of western books for learning fundamentals that I already know all the concepts & terminology and it's just a matter of translating those into an anime context. Some of these books talk about things that aren't explained in western books, like thick fat anime girls butts and tentacles. But a lot of techniques they use are pretty much the same so you don't really need to understand what they say most of the time.

A lot of triangles are for figure drawing, the redlines are the line of action or the squish & squash changes they want you to pay attention to based on the character interacting with an object. (Such as if the girl sits down, her butt flattens)

Willing to translate some pages to english next year if I'll get crypto's for it.

Hello, I'm thinking of translating a bunch of Japanese PDF's to english. What fonts should I use? (And preferable font-sizes?)

I'm going to try translating 1 PDF first, and see if the community likes it then decide if I want to continue doing this.

Let's use pic-related as an example. What font should I use for the top Kanji?
What font should I use for the text below the top one? Also if anyone done this kind of editing before, I'm open to recommendations for software. In meantime I'll use GIMP.

Forgot to mention, if you zoom in on the picture you will see I put numbers on it. I am asking which font should I use for each text so the PDF doesn't lose quality? I have never done this before, so I don't know what standard fonts are to use. (I just know Comic Sans is a joke)

Question for the books thread I think.

I have a few books with your typical glue binding spine, nothing fancy. The books have full color plates and some of the plates actually extend as a two-page spread and take up the entire fucking paper - no margin whatsoever.

What would be the nicest way to take this apart so I can scan the pages without ruining the glued end of them? I've seen people chipping away at the glue with an xacto knife but the end results are horrible.

I am learning Japanese from it and that's the primary reason I'm doing it.
The picture I showed you was just an example and is being used for practice. I care about the Clip Studio books and the more advanced ones related to Manga techniques.

if you actually read these books you will realize that a vast majority of professional Mangaka are using those exact techniques in their Manga. Once you start reading them you will start to see patterns in all the poses, expressions, backgrounds, outfits, etc. They're all hacks with a few exceptions that just replicate what they see in tutorials and fans can't tell the difference. There's a reason why all penises look the same, and every Tentacle has the same amount of slime to it, etc.

They teach really good workflows, and there's a reason why western people who draw anime are NGMI without tracing or doing basic illustrations.

Maybe you could scrape the Mega links from the pic related Artbook thread on /t/ and include them in your OP? There are tons of collections with a huge amount of stuff that people are requesting here over and over again. If I wasn´t the already way too busy fuck that I am, I could spend the rest of my days replying to them one by one. But I am, so I won´t.

To be clear: Mega links, not torrents.

However, I just thought it could help.
