You know what that means when it happens, right? You need to go study real hands and anatomy until you can stylize it properly. Anime hands leave out some details and are pretty simplified, however they do keep implications of bone, tendon, muscle and fat. You're gonna have to learn about them to really understand how to replicate that style.

It's not too hard to learn, just keep at it, read some Hogarth's Dynamic aHnds and Anatomy for Sculptors by Uldis Zarin and Sandis Kondrats. There are pictures of hands all over the Internet that you can use for practice.

Good luck!

You know, this is nice and all, but I'm not exactly sure it falls into the topic of the thread all that much. I know there's really stylized anime and manga, but I'm pretty sure the kind the thread's focusing on is a lot softer and more "moe." I mean I can't look at this and not see clearly western influences at a glance.

This is my 2nd one shot, I wanna get it done before the deadline so I can also have it in.

>>3244952
No lie.

8+ hours a day, every single day for the past 2 years. My first ever manga was this shitty Trump one called the Debattle that I made last year. You can really see the progress I made in just one year if you compare these two one shots to that, and then what I made when making Heavy is the Head.

>>3244968
Lol, I'm white. Spanish actually.

>>3245009
I always just draw a simple cube, or a very simplified cubic skull (comprised of two cubes, in the proportions of what I want, divide that horizontally and vertically, middle line and brow line, and just "sculpt it" from there.

I tend to be very expressive too, so typically, I don't even start with the skull till I have a caritcature/doodle of the sort of expression that I want.

>>3245042
While I would recommend everyone read Loomis, it's not what I would say helped me the most. If you can draw a cube in perspective, you can draw pretty much anything. Thus, I'd say Robertson. His book on perspective is 10/10, and truly the one art book I'd say everyone should grind again and again and again. Whereas Loomis and others you can go through them once, and grasp the concepts, or have been elaborated on better by other artists, Robertson's course on perspective is still uncontested, and more useful than anything else imo, because it helps you internalize "thinking in 3D." Combine than with Vilpuu for gesture to really push your dynamism, and most of the tools you need for making manga are kinda there.

Anatomy, while important, isn't worth obsessing over like perspective is, if your goal is manga. Especially for the faces, you're breaking anatomy so hard, it's really going to fuck you over more than anything if you go too deep into it, and don't learn to stylize properly.

This is why it's important to really zero in on WHAT you wanna do as an artist most of all. The fundies you need most depend on what your goals are. So you should zero in on what's most necessary, rather than wasting time on what you don't need, by trying to be good at everything.

That said, it still takes countless hours. I cannot understate the benefit of drawing A LOT. The only way you'll truly get better is by putting the hours in. 10,000 hours to mastery is no meme. In these two years, I must have put in a solid 5000 hours. But I wouldn't say it's 10,000 to mastery. It's more like a black belt in Martial Arts. It's 10,000 hours till you're pro, but there's still the upper "Dans" persay, that really set people apart.

However, it's not just putting in a lot of hours. Getting into a state of flow, where you just keep going up and up and up and up, only ever happens if you DON'T STOP drawing. Do it till it hurts, till you have headaches, build that work ethic and discipline to keep pushing no matter what. That's the only way to get good at this, there's no other way around it. Obviously, you can't start with 8 hours a day, but you should definitely work toward that. If this is what you wanna do for a living, getting to a level where you can get paid for doing this, and sustain yourself so you can dedicate more time to drawing by doing what I like to call "paid practice" should be priority number one.

More than anything, I'd say making actual manga is what really pushed me to even higher levels, because you're drawing so many panels in one page, and pushing them out very fast, you really start to sharpen your skills. Especially since manga will require you to draw stuff that's normally outside of your comfort zone, based on what shots and compositions you need, thus, you'll improve a lot faster than if you focus on doing one painting a day of stuff that you like cause you find it easy to do.

I'm no expert, as I'm still learning the ins an outs of making manga. Both the anon that you quoted, and this anon >>>/a/166067946 are both half right.

Blank backgrounds do serve a purpose, which is to convey certain emotions like silence, or emptiness, calmness, etc... it depends. However, looking at the page most were criticizing >>>/a/166066055, I'd say this particular page feels like it lacks backgrounds due to it being rushed, rather than the white spaces being intentionally blank. I find it funny that Bleach was brought up, as Bleach is an example of a manga in which blank backgrounds are used intentionally to make the fights more dynamic, and because it suited the thematic tone of the story (the afterlife and all that). By contrast BnHA is a hero story set in urban environments, thus, it'd make sense for it to make more abundant use of detailed backgrounds to give a more concrete sense of place to the story.

That all said, you don't wanna clutter your pages too much by adding a background into every panel. This can tire the reader's eye, and it diminishes the effect of big sprawling backgrounds in spreads. Thus, blank backgrounds can also be used to create contrast, not only between black ink and white paper to make things pop, but also the general impact of things. Still, that page has way too many just pure blank background, I feel he could have used more "emotional" background effects like hatching and such to add more to the mood.

Thanks!

I get what you mean about the paneling, in fact, those pages took a long time to make due to how dense they were. Still they kinda need that fast beat, due to the comedy and the interaction. Back and forth banter doesn't work very well if you spread it too thin among many pages as it ruins the comedic timing. It kinda has to hit you like "BAM BAM BAM" you know what I mean?

Still, I try to offset it by making the pages where things take a break larger and giving them more breathing room.

I kinda see it like cuts in a comedy film they kinda have to hit you with the right timing so it works right.
Also, for the record, if I ever just not reply to people and stuff, it's cause I've been blacklisted as a bot on Google's captcha for posting on 4chan too much, so sometimes it just shuts me out, giving me the "ERROR: you mistyped the captcha" message again and again. It's super annoying, and eventually, I just give up and stop trying to post.

/ic/ dies not represent the masses. Just look at the styles of Japanese cartoons and how they have changed. Then look at stuff like European comics from around that time. It's not like borders matter when it comes to inspiration and many japanese artists themselves mention foreign inspirations. It's just weebs who think that if a japanese did it then they invented it.

When it comes to modern animation and form language then disney pretty much set the standard with its first stuff. They treated it like an artform and went abstract in all sorts of ways. Hired famous artist at the time and schooled their animators in new ways.

A personal opinion is that marvel and DC is like a poison to the industry in the west.

By losing the nose, the chiseled features of the faces and the overall shape of he eyes, and well, the manliness of every character, you'd be getting closer to the "character" of anime characters. Take that as you will. See, the thing that I've noticed a lot about /ic/ and western artists is that, as another anon alluded to earlier, westerners are too fixated on details, and too fixated on bringing over what they know to eastern styles of art, which work with a more "less is more" mentality. At some point, I used to try and draw in the shape of the nose like you're doing on the top left corner one. And you know what I got told? "It looks like shit, get rid of it, it's too western." And they were right. Get rid of the nose entirely, and work with as little lines you can to make a shape that your brain will fill in as "nose" and then slowly work towards learning how to actually do noses more in the style. I know this is a bit of a meme example, and not even a good one for what I'm trying to elaborate on given Murata's versatile style with more western influences, but still compare.

I'll have to cut away at those jaws, chins and noses. Maybe the eyes can do the talking. I know I don't want to draw details in every panel... I'll have to exaggerate the headdress and think about fashion too. Good advice thanks!

Your art's getting better and better but holy shit you can't write a story to save your life. Your earlier mangas were some of the most autistic things I've ever seen, and this current tripe looks like some of the most unimaginative takes on character designs I've ever seen. Take some writing prompt courses. Find out what makes a character tick. Good advice overall though.

But there is this one korean artist which I like very much, which while his designs are epic in nature, they are way more simple and aesthetic, and it blends with the story well to because the main characters are epic knights and liches

it was a long name, something like, The story of a lich king, or something like that. The author made another zombie manga too, of this kid which returns as a zombie and tries to reunite with a childhood friend which became a famous singer

I can draw different parts with that quality from memory, like the eyes, hands, a strand of hair, but I can't put everything together. The best I can do is drawing an anime head with hair and face but then I can't connect the neck to the head/body, it's like everything is a different object and they must have the right distance and angle to be create an illusion.

The best way to explain it is thinking like live2D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWnPWygJEyM, advance the video a little, see how everything is layered object that you can move around?

I have seen professional artists drawing manga just from memory, they start from the eyes with ink and just complete the whole face, hair, body and pose perfectly without any guide lines at all. So I think it's just memory, not symbol drawing but actual anime memory.

The whole point of making the head big is to look cute, because it makes the proportions more child-like, triggering our primal monkey-brain to feel protective (this is what the urban youth would call "moe").
And last I checked children have pretty pencilly necks.

Well unless the author wanted to draw characters that look like they have downs syndrome or some shit.
(Which seems to be the case with a lot of recent releases.)

I don't know, maybe some authors who live off this simply stopped caring about producing anything worth a damn.

>>3249956
Having a well constructed neck does not make a character any less "moe" tho, pic related.

On the contrary, since necks are considered to be an erogenous zone of the body, they can serve to further reinforce a characters sex appeal.
It really is the worse when professionals squander this opportunity by being lazy hacks and drawing stupid sticks instead.

I think that would be just handicapping yourself.

The only exercise I can think is try drawing the whole thing in greyscale only, the first time with pencil, eraser and paper. The greyscale is so you don't waste too much time and focus studying the lighting, then you can try again stepping it up each time. For example try again using color pencils, then again but with paint, then the final time try to use effects. In my opinion if you're not using layers then just stick with traditional painting.

Because layers increase the trouble exponentially when it comes to editing.

Suppose that I have a file with lineart on one layer, color in another, shadows in another, masks, folders etc.

But I decide that I want to erase a hand and do it differently. I'll have to find the lineart layer and erase that. Then find the color layer, then modify the masks, and god forbids if you have clipping masks using that hand because you'll have to change them too. As opposed to simply erasing it and drawing it again.

I can finish stuff 3 times as fast when I'm not worrying about layers. But I can't achieve such a clean result as this guy who doesn't uses them. Just how the hell does he do it?

It's totally ok to start with anime. For a beginner, what's important is to draw many times and compete. I recommend tracing at least 100 poses in a month. Pick up some of them to copy and memorize. After you get used to drawing bodies, go on to some figure drawing art book like Loomis and continue on tracing and study. Even if you do this everyday, it will take at least 1 or 2 years before you are able to draw with reference. If you are patient and passionate enough, in 3 to 10 years, you will be able to draw from imagination. Good luck.

It was deleted for a strange reason. I'll wait a couple hours before making a new thread now.

Why don't you create a discord study group for anime/manga? I'd be up for that. Just ban the retards with too much time on their hands that go there only to troll.

We could go through the books on that cgpeers torrent, its all in 日本語 but I think its pretty much self explanatory.

I'd really like a thread on the discord too with some exercise suggestions, so that when you don't know what to draw you just pick an exercise and do it.

I will consider it, but I see discord as a gaming app and using it for social creates cliques and I don't want that. Threads are more accessible for everyone.

There are tons of art discords and its very easy to post your art there, also there is no anonimity so you can control retards more easily.

But alright...

I'm against discord. It always ruins everything, people get too comfortable there and just dick around and everything gets ruined. Especially since these threads are just barely starting to pick up steam, I think it'd be very counterproductive to embrace that sort of cancer. Why not post more exercises here in the meantime?

It's an okay suggestion if done right. Aldoori is pretty popular and this thread is just out of womb.

I agree with you.

this lesson https://www.palmie.jp/lessons/17 will still be for next thread. I will get and share the premium stuff. That will take a while to get a middleman for payments.

Why not come up with our own exercises? I personally struggle with heads and faces the most and it seems a lot of others do too. This thread's exercise wasn't so bad as a place to start.
