Copying from life is best but in this case I used someone else's study. You can see in pic related the light/dark contrast and use of color is much better.

Copying and using references is tedious and feels shoddy but you quickly pick up the techniques regarding specific textures and lighting/shading. It becomes muscle memory.

As long as you put one foot in front of the other and keep going you'll get there, anon.

May be i should explain what i did

First i draw box on original art (not mine)
Reason of doing this to figure out proportion and simplify information also this box helping when you drawn something off
Since i'm terrible at drawing i got a adviced this method

than i directly draw box accurately in my work canvas with eye. Than draw character with observation
Than paint with solid color and glazing
Also paint above line work and mergedown layers

But this piece will last project of this method. I will completly memorize 5 head proportion and got a grasp of gesture

Little different situation for me but I know that feel.
Currently torn between going with the username I use for everything already, using my real name or creating a fresh username.
Each of those has its own downsides and I think it's safe to assume that sooner or later, given even a fairly minor level of success, your real name is gonna get out there.

depending on what you use your old username on, I might advise against it. Like, if you sign up for online games or reddit or other non-art social media. People will dig deep for dirt, and making it easy for them to link your art persona to other comments you're leaving around the internet isn't such a great idea.

I've made that mistake, but I've got a fairly large following at this point so I just have to hope people don't connect the dots back to my embarrassing furry art past.

I've been looking at instagram accounts from this thread for purely educational and stat-related reasons, and -besides the fact that /ic/ posters have between 100 and 300 followers with some exceptions- I've learned that the most popular art seems to be drawings of pretty girl faces, or girls with pretty faces drawing stuff, or celebrity studies. Not to diss on any of them, just the facts. That one motherfucker with over 7000 followers still intrigues me, as he only posts celebrity studies and some other pop culture stuff. Kudos on that dude, I don't like his art at all but that's quite an achievement for what he does.

I hear you. When I post an original illustration or something from my comic that I worked 6 months on I get a tepid response. If I post a sketch of Jenifer Lawrence I did in 15 min I get 300 likes instantly. My current strategy is mix my stuff in with the pop culture stuff so it actually gets seen, but I could be wrong too. This is the most recent painting I did. The bride wanted her and the groom to look like comic book characters. They also insisted on having a monkey there.

Since then, I've been working to try and improve at having my paintings tell a story with just one image as opposed to just simple poses and such.

Then a couple of months ago I realized that there was a kind of hierarchy in the elements (with shape being primary for many art styles). When I started thinking in that way the elements became more distinct
