Well, I tried to give you some props because I recognize the bit of skill you have, but my dislike is pretty subjective. I can see someone liking it.

I find everything to be too overstated, and shiny and bright, like it's screaming out to me how totally radical it's trying to be. Also, everything is rendered, yet still looks flat. Probably because of thick outlines which don;t describe the form properly. The squid guy looks ok for this, but I can't imagine duckman existing in the round. That's the best I can articulate, it' skinda useless critique.

>Starting off from copying anime instead of grinding fundamentals has really fucked me

We all start somewhere. Some phenomenal artists have even started out tracing. As long as you branch off from it, it doesn't matter. It's not detrimental to your progress, in fact it's the opposite; the more art styles you can take inspiration from the more you will be able to grow as an artist. You'll eventually be able to develop your own style based on what you know. Art isn't created in a vacuum.

As for chicken scratching, it's just a bad habit and a lot of beginners do it. Practice drawing smooth, solid lines. Don't worry about drawing anything in particular initially, just draw lines and shapes. Training the muscles in your hand and creating muscle memory is very important.

>I kept taking week long breaks

Don't sweat it. It might feel like you lose progress when you stop practicing, but it's not truly lost. All the practicing you've done is stored up in your brain and in your hand muscles.

Observe, practice, learn, repeat. Always strive to improve but be kind and honest with yourself. I really think you do have a lot of potential.

all the colors are simply taken 1:1 from the digital photo with the pipette (i) tool. It has the typical, cold colors of a digital camera. while the background, jacket and cap are absolutely carelessly drawn, just for them to "be there", the face was covered directly with the brush tool with a little more attention for details. the strange, red edges on the shadow and ears don't fit at all, which comes from a lack of understanding why they are there in the first place (traunslucency in the ear)

Kinda but not quite, this is the "full" version. Only difference is the comicbook cover stuff, which hides the unifinished upper part of the drawing. It was sort of a spitpaint, done in one day and polished a little bit the next morning.

Also to add on, your use of contrast is great in the bottom half of the image, but seems more and too faded in the top half- that could easily be remedied by going back and editing more dark tones in. A small bit of contrast added into the feature on the wings as well would really make it pop.

Okay, when I look at the hands and compare to the faces- I’m compelled to say less than a year and that you traced in the good parts of this picture.

That being said, tracing is a great method of teaching your brain to grasp certain subjects. If you pick a subject and trace it a bunch of times in different positions/dimensions you’ll eventually be able ton draw it well off hand by memory.

So this is a good practice method- but in my moral opinion you should only pass off drawings done after that practice that aren’t specifically traced.

I used Derwent watercolor pencils for the color and Pigma Microns for the ink. I'm not very experienced with either, I used to just use pencil up until a couple years ago. I sketched it in pencil, colored it with the watercolor pencils, then used wet paint brushes to push, pull and mix the colors around. Then i inked it after the paint dried.

I have a lot more control over watercolor pencils and the brushes I use are pretty shitty quality anyhow so that probably is a contributing factor in the sloppiness

Hey, I've been doodling for a while now, but I very bad at making finished pieces, mainly because I'm bad at drawing big. All the pictures and doodle and figures I've ever drawn could fit onto a tenth of a page. Any tips on how to break this habit (aside from drawing larger, which I'm obviously consciously doing).

>> No.3238311

>>3238297

You should show something you've done so it'd be easier to say something useful.

You could try studying photographs or other peoples drawings/paintings and bring them to a really detailed finish. This way you'll learn what it feels like to get something "done". It's much easier to gauge whether you've finished something when you know what the thing is supposed to look like in the end.

Artist of >>3236525 and >>3236601

"Technically" 4-5 years, but more like ~3 of solid discipline and practice

I only learned and began to understand the importance of perspective in my last year of art school (it was a shit school for the major and I talk about why in >>3237910 ). Learning how to be "fluent" in shapes and perspective allows you to use it like math to draw almost anything, and check your shapes along the way. Drawing was painful and confusing without it.

Pic related: A pen drawing of some cars we passed while on a road trip. No photographs used.

Anyone who says perspective is not an absolute necessity for representational drawing is either a liar or a fraud. Don't trust them, and keep your money far, far away.

1.5-2.5 years?

Made some minor fixes to your image. I don't know what you were going for with the BG but even if you like the rainbow theme, you should still have used some hard strokes back there. Same goes for the character. Look at stuff from people like Phil Hale for example.

I don't have time/skill to do this shit with proper brush economy really fast but I hope you get my point. I also think it'd be a good idea to widen the image a little more. Yours is split 50-50 and the guys head is also split 50-50 so the whole thing looks kind of stiff. I didn't really go into the anatomy of the guys face or anything but you might want to look at some images of beards and shit. The green-ish tinted background was just the color I happened to have selected when I started the over painting. You could go with a deep red or what ever. Try to make the shadows on the dude match the BG color and only use the soft brush when you want to fade something into the BG. Hope I helped.

thanks for the paintover!

i don't know exactly, but it's around 4 years since i first tried to draw anything, i was practicing quite on and off tho

i just finished the nose/eye area and i got really bored with the piece beyond that, but i should go back and fix those things, looks kinda cool with your fixes!

finalizing anything is one of my weakest points, even if i notice flaws i just cant get myself to fix stuff up, i just abandon them and move on to the next one

Man your improvement is really fucking impressive! Inspiring stuff. Glad if I helped even a little bit. I think you could go even further with the rendering even on the nose and eye. See how far you can push it. But yeah. I think you could definitely use some hard brushes. You're skilled enough to do it!

The bad anatomy and silly pose, I can somewhat stand before giving you some information about what books to read to get better.

BUT THOSE LINES
WHAT THE FUCK
Don't attempt this shit again until you're able to draw confidently and accomplish what you want to draw in less than 2 strokes of a pen.
I suggest you go through drawabox to hammer the point of controlled lines home so you can happily improve upon your construction, gesture, and anatomy at the same time with renewed vigor.

This was just a travesty to look at.
Those fucking lines will be in my nightmares in a couple of hours.

I wouldn't really know because I'm a beginner myself, but a lot of artists I talk to improved pretty quickly. I think I've just about reached 6 months of studying now.

I'm going to sleep for a while so I'm just going to post the first digital portrait I did after 3 months of studying. There's all kinds of noticeable mistakes with it that screams /beg/ and I still don't know how to use CSP but it was kinda fun. So I thought that the bare minimum after 3 months would be to draw a digital portrait that kinda looks like a person almost.

After that portrait I pretty much haven't done anything tho lmao. There's one more digital portrait that I don't have the pic of on my phone that's on my blog tho.

I think at some point after you feel confident with your fundies, you'll start thinking about whether you should keep 'grinding', or instead branch off from your raw studies and start thinking about your own unique stylizations. I guess it depends on what type of work you want to do - highly rendered/polished work (more grinding fundies), or more stylized work (more stylistic experimentation), though both approaches are totally great in their own right.

keep going man, you will get what i like to refer to as "noob gains".
same thing applies for weightlifting, in the first year of lifting one will see themselves beat personal bests almost weekly, and then monthly ,whilst the gap grows longer as you lift longer to achieve new levels.
same thing for drawing, alot of guys and girls make ridiculous progress in the first year of taking it seriously, and then each following year they start to make less huge leaps after grasping more difficult techniques and knowledge.

keep drawing mane.
