Drawing porn comic as practice for regular manga. Paneling is fucking hard. I've seen the "Z/S" shape diagrams but actually implementing it is hard.

Just going to do a brief blogpost that may or may not save some time for anyone newer than I.

My goal, like all of you, is to draw anime. I started out with proko, loomis etc and while I was learning, I just couldn't apply loomis to every ref. /ic/ loves to say "loomis is a template, modify it, retard" but they never show you HOW to modify it. So I dropped it. Proko's mannequinization technique is extremely boring so I dropped that too.

What really helped me was picking up keys to drawing. I've been practicing the first three chapters every day now. (The last 33% of the book is lighting and shit I don't want to get into right now) Now I am actually getting decent at drawing anime heads, butts, etc whatever I choose to focus on. Obviously every second or third sketch looks embarrassingly fucking bad, but. That book has really helped me so far. I'm starting to think the key to drawing anime is learning to purge symbol drawing completely from your brain, practicing "fundamentals" like the various forms of site, measuring, etc, and just practicing over and over until what once required intense study to do a shoddy job, now you can replicate adeptly without reference. At that point I think construction and forms finally become useful. I believe starting out new with construction before anything is not as good. I see a lot of people in /beg/ on month 3 still drawing fairly poorly because they're trying to get more out of loomis than it has to offer. I dunno. Maybe I'm retarded.

The reason Asians are "better" at drawing anime is the same reason they're better at taking tests: it's about cultural values. Eastern cultures value repetition, memorization, and tradition, which is what motivates them to have their drawings fall specifically into the anime style. In the West, even if your goal throughout life is to draw Anime, you will most likely incorporate more and more outside influences as you improve upon your skills, since originality and innovation are more heavily valued there.
Of course, the style doesn't actually matter. The real reason Anime and Manga are as popular as they are is because of quality storytelling combined with a streamlined production and distribution system; the way they draw is just the icing.
If you really want to be successful, stop giving a fuck about falling into a specific style, and just make sure your work carries a good story and is well advertised.
And remember, Asians might be great at tests, but most innovation comes from the West.

If you want a quick fix, my main issue is your line weight. It's boring as shit and jarring to look at. Start using brushes that have pen pressure turned on and practice controlling your line weight(Also if for some god forsaken reason you have a tablet that doesn't have pen pressure support get one). If you're able to master that you'll go a long way to making your stylized art look better cause admittedly, that Megumi is pretty cute but the line weight is killing it.

Once you work on your line weight I'd suggest studying up on color theory, what compliments each other and improving how you color. And don't forget you always can improve your fundies like anatomy, proportions, measuring, shading, etc etc.

Everytime I bring it up he's always ready to bite on me). I waited till the thread fell off the board but decided to wait a little longer.

Op of this thread here.
Wasn't me that said that, I haven't visited that thread in a while.
I just wanted to make a thread where people studied anime and I could give serious advice whenever I could, no "animu is shiet" or "just fucking quit" from me.

I know it's arrogant, I just wanted more honest help for /ic/ anime artists out there.

And the first thread was very fun, so I made this one.
I'm in the process of making a comic manga-style and I'm not a pro at it, but there are artists here that have problems I can help based on what I learned.

I started with Loomis/Vilppu like /ic/ told me to, I looked up tutorials for anime faces that weren't total shit, I tried to imitate the work of some artists I like, but I still can't get it, and I don't know what is it that I'm doing wrong (construction wise, I know hair and line confidence are shit).

If I'm copying from a drawn reference, I feel like I do a better job. Still, I always have trouble locating the facial features since sometimes it feels like they have arbitrary spacing and sizes, so my real life measurements don't help at all. Also I always fuck up the way the jaw connects with the ear/head, and the jaw itself tends to be too short, the entire face gets squashed.

And trying to draw from imagination (or from a photo reference) is a pain in the ass. Not only is the construction all fucked up, also the faces are simply not appealing at all. They don't even look generic, they just look bad from a design standpoint. I guess that what I'm trying to say is that I don't have a style and I don't know how to make one, or to how just shit out a cutesy anime face.

The faces with the red arrows are characters of my own making. I aim to go for that Prison School/Tokyo Ghoul/Gantz look.

TL;DR what am i doing wrong

I don't see the point in studying "anime anatomy". It just seems like studying anatomy with extra steps. Like why? Why not just study real anatomy then simplify it?

Anime anatomy isn't hard, it's literally just "Smooth Mesh" on realism.

Wouldn't the more useful thing to focus on be the theory behind the proportion choices or like maybe discussion of design choices for the various styles of eyes?

It's an edit. The character is Takagi from Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san but the face is Nagatoro from Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san.

that face is okay for a 2 min shitty sketch drawing but as a final work assuming you were aiming for something like>>3239737>>3236947 kind of style is pretty bad , eyes are not even ,one has a bigger iris , these lines in the bottom of the eye are different one is almost straight and the other is curved , that hair is really shit doesn't project form or a 3d sense of deep but all of it may be just your style imo i don't find it appealing just like some DA-tier drawing

I recently joined a one-week comic book workshop and let me tell you, drawing is super easier when you have other artists around.
We've been drawing a group comic, everyone draws a specific character in each page.
Some tips I got from it:

-write down any ideas in sticky notes, you might wanna recicle any old ideas you had for your newer stories.

-do thumbnails in A6, storyboards in A4, draw in A3 so you can later print in A5 (scanning it is gonna be a bitch).

-get one of those blue sketching pencils. Not color pencils, get the good stuff that erases easily so you can ink over it.

-Printing 100 comics at a place like Staples might cost more than getting a good printer and printing it yourself (prices may vary, I'm from Europe so it might cost more at your place).

-Plan the pages for the printing. For example, if you have 8 pages then you print it like this

>Paper 1
Front of paper: 2 | 7
Back of paper: 1 | 8

>paper 2
Front: 4 | 5
Back: 3 | 6

- dust-free erasers are a lie, get a kneaded eraser.
