IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

As a beginner, what's a reasonable trajectory of time I should expect to spend on a Bargue plate as I progress? I'm still very unskilled with rendering but need to start eventually. I've seen some people show lapses or progress where they spent anywhere from 40 to 100+ hours on it and I barely want to "finish" something normally. I assume I'll eventually hit a natural ending but just wanted to see what others had experience with. The tens of hours seemed to be atelier study.

I don't know why they said it was stiff when your piece was mainly just a head (stiff and dynamic refers to poses rather than portraits) but the way you get into drawing less stiff drawings is by using the "line of action".

Also, really try to figure out the mood or the piece that you're going for. (Is the character sassy, timid, haughty, happy, etc) That can also add more to it.

highest quality displayed images on tumblr are gonna be around 1280px wide and 1920px, dashboard will resize them to 540px wide on the dashboard regardless, see here: https://unwrapping.tumblr.com/post/75873529443/dashboard-image-sizes

save as a high quality jpeg because they'll convert it to a jpeg anyway, but if they convert it themselves they'll reduce quality

instagram will display 1080x1080 now, but you can have a portrait/landscape with one 1080 dimension (maybe not from the app upload but computer? not sure)

So I've spent years sculpting and now because of finances and a broken oven combined with no marketplace for clay sculpting, I want to draw. I thought I'd be good at drawing from imagination because I understand form but it's a lot different to draw form out when I can just have a block in front of me and carve out how the form feels, and with clay that's even easier. So here's some hand studies and pose, used my niece for reference. Any advice to help put 3D forms onto a flat fucking surface? Or am I doomed since it's obvious my skills are hands on and not visual (as I'm starting to feel).

His hand doesn't shake because he knows what he's doing. And he's been doing it for a very long time. That's mileage.

Medical condition aside. People usually have shaky hands when they're not sure. Like chicken scratching.

If you do have medical condition, it's okay. Proko way is one way to do it. There are other techniques out there.

Look at other artist sketches (preferably those that are better than proko). Some have scribbles that barely resemble anything but the end result is amazing.

Well if you're so good then why don't you graduate to the draw thread? Surely us 'beginners' could never critique art that is as good as yours. You're better off among those of your skill level, like Ruan Jia or Wei Feng.

Jesus Christ you sound like that kid in high school that though he was the shit and showed everyone his shitty drawings. You're bad at art.
Either accept that and learn or deny it and never improve.

Just fuck my shit up. I finished "Drawing on the Right side of the Brain" Then I had to take a break from drawing for a bit to prep for a job interview and now I'm back working on "Keys to Drawing". This is the copying exercise. Everytime I try to draw blind, I fuck up. What do I do?

Proportions of the facial features are not bad. The face is somehow too wide. Nose is too wide and it lacks structure. Draw with more straight lines, otherwise it will look artificial (the eyes, for example, look like fish). When drawing heads draw also the neck and part of the body, never cut the drawing like that. Values are wrong. Study the planes of the head. The reflected light in the shadow area is almost always darker that the dark mid tone. Rendering is sloppy. Sharpen your pencil, study cross hatching. Good luck.

If you're having a lot of trouble drawing what you see, yes. If you were looking at your drawing as you were going, I would say you need to work on your visual measuring and proportion. Don't feel bad, I'm working on the same thing.

Ctrl+Paint has a few videos on that in the Traditional Drawing category. Also, you can use any pencil or high contrast b&w picture to practice. Here's a picture I used when I first started. Just flip upside-down and get to work.

Based on the fact that the two feminine figures look pretty good I would guess that you're used to drawing anime girl type stuff? This other one on the left tells me you aren't used to drawing people from different angles and more dynamic positions. The proportion on this one is all messed up and it's honestly hard to tell what it's supposed to be doing.

I would suggest trying to break the human body down into simple forms to get a better feel for them in 3d space. Maybe try working specifically on masculine body types for awhile as well.

My best word of advice would be to learn how to draw realistic humans first. I know, it sucks, but it will make your understanding of the anime style significantly better. Anime is a prime example of the whole "learn the rules before breaking them" adage.

Once you get comfortable with the complex forms of a realistic person, you will find it much easier to simplify that to a more stylized (anime) form.

gesture isn't drawing the contour. proko tells you thins but i'm not a huge fan of how proko teaches it because he leaves a lot of gaps in his decision making without explanation. start more with the general action lines of figures. after enough of that you will be able to incorporate energy into your drawings and then you can slowly start adding "details" to your gesture drawings by landmark.

pay attention to where the head is facing, the front of the neck, the collarbones, shoulders, center line, pelvis, then legs. then you can add the ribcage or bean (i don't care much for the bean) and refine the details. nailing those will help you how the form is defined in 3d space so you can get a better idea of capturing the essence of the lines you will place. i found this series a lot more useful to watch and then you can consult with proko or other methods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bw3BW4Q6VM&index=2&list=PLXkHosWORUv6bxfPGz31WESqw_87adQ5r

The drawing bit is a journey for all of us but having a good understanding of 3d form goes a long way in making your pictures better. Some people get too locked in to the 2d image and don't think about what is actually happening in the space inside the image.

I feel like you do way too many studies of images where you're drawing what you think you see. It ends up being distorted and not what's happening in the photo. The image frame is above her looking down, and you've compressed the depth of the image massively. You should be studying more perspective and measurements than trying to copy a new image every day. Do more still lifes instead of copying pictures from online.

I'm not exactly an anatomy master myself and I'm on my phone so this is really hard to draw with just a finger, but here are some corrections.

I'm not indicating that you should draw more realistically with this, and I'm not going to tell you to stop drawing manga style, but everybody benefits when they draw humans with human musculature and skeletal structures in mind. In this you had her lower half twisting back to front, and breast tissues are shaped like a teardrop, not a ball. It's always easier if you sketch out the teardrop shape first and then erase the relevant lines. This always applies except in the case of large breasts, which is more like balls (of fat) attached to teardrop-shaped muscles. Also fabric doesn't stick to skin like that when it's pulled taut, unless it's being physically glued to the skin.

The face does vaguely remind me of symbol drawing but at the same time it looks too cartoony for me to care. The left ear in the first probably wouldn't be as visible as it is though from that angle.

>I'm just using gimp2
krita is miles ahead of gimp and has become my photoshop replacement, i highly recommend you make the switch (it's available on windows, mac, and linux)

The david revoy brush pack is really good too, and he has a brief tutorial on getting up and running with krita along with a youtube channel that has some demos of useful features like the g'mic plugin
http://www.davidrevoy.com/article319/krita-brushkit-v8
http://www.davidrevoy.com/article185/tutorial-getting-started-with-krita-1-3-bw-portrait
GDquest on youtube also has some good Krita resources on more specifics

Krita has some mix brushes and dry brushes that allow you to do that but color in general is really difficult at first in digital. You can get by with the eye dropper.

>>3225730
I can only really point you to some more resources but it takes a lot of practice and painting in value can result in really muddy and ugly colors. It seems like you don't know much about color locality or relativity which is why you think the picture looks bad. Blonde hair isn't actually yellow so depending on the main colors of your piece or palette you're going with you'll actually want to pick something closer to a brown that will appear yellow. Colors look like what they are based on the colors around them.

Brush blending practice and using an eraser

https://www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/brush-technique-blending

What I consider to be important lessons and you'll probably want to watch them at like 2x speed but slow down and rewatch the important parts a few times because it's too much to learn at once. You're not going to copy them but they're a few approaches to base your colors off of the next time you paint

Glaring issue is that you are putting down lines without knowing what they are, what the reason for it and how to deduce where to place it.

Like the first line across the top of the sphere, what is that line suppose to indicate.

What I assume is your eye level guide and center line isn't even drawn correctly let alone the side plane.

It takes more than 5 minutes to glance over a book before you "get it" so just try to understand more what exactly it is you are drawing and take it slowly.

You can draw from photo. There's nothing wrong with it. But always keep in mind that your subject is a 3D shape in 3D space.

Drawing from life does help but you can learn by keeping it in mind while drawing from photo ref.

>i find it really hard to get clean lines on a tablet

What stabilization level are you using? Beyond that you need to get out of the habit of fuzzy lining / chicken scratching in general which is thoroughly entrenched habit in most beginners. To use a simple example, when most beginners are freehanding an elipse, they just keep going around in a circle until it looks more even, the correct lines are buried under the incorrect ones and you can't learn from that.

Think about the line and ghost it if you need to and remember especially that digital art is very forgiving. Just ctrl+z.

Here's mine to compare. I'm a beginner too and these aren't perfect so sorry if I am coming off as too pedagogical, but I am starting to get satisfied with my line work.

I think the stem looks a tad long. Without proper foreshortening there we lose a bit of depth.
To me, the main problem is lack of contrast in the values. The banana is close to a cylinder and consistently yellow but you've got that edge which should separate it into two primary planes instead of a cylinder. Make the plane in shadow darker, especially near that edge. Give it some reflected light just above the occlusion shadow where it meets the ground. Then you should be cookin

Actually, I was looking at this on my phone with the brightness down all the way and I misjudged the reference. I still think lack of contrast is your problem but it's more like three planes instead of two. The two in shadow are pretty similar in value. Also, really look closely for the difference in shape and value by the base and the side by the stem. By the base, those edges are shape. By the stem it's softer and more cylindrical and the light wraps around it more. You've captured that in contour but not value.

feel the form anon.
memes aside, use contour lines if you are having trouble imagining it. Try to imagine how it would feel if you literally drew a line across the object in 3D. Now do that on the piece of paper. Also, use printer paper instead of ruled paper.

New to /ic/, not sure if this is the right thread to ask, sorry if not.

Where do genitals and anus go?

My guess:
>green: clit/superior part of the vulva, penis
>blue: inferior part of the vulva, testes
>red: anus

I'm just no sure men and women actually share exact location like that. The penis seems to come out of a different location than the clit does... and the scrotum couldn't possibly take as much space as the whole inferior part of the vulva.

heck yeah, nice improvement! keep working towards cleaning up the forms and values. your shading is much better than the beginning.

the paper grain thing isn't a big deal (I like how it looks, personally), though if the paper is low quality it will have less tooth, meaning that eventually it just won't take any more pigment aka you can't shade it more. if you want a smoother surface, look for heavier/thicker sheets, which will be listed as higher weight (pounds or grams) and will have different surfaces. bristol is usually pretty smooth, see if you can find some of that.

can i get a critique pls. Im still trying to understand the forms of the face; The cheekbones and the side area between the eyes and ears give me a lot of trouble. Im starting to grasp the skull a little better, but dont know much about the muscels of the face; any good resources for that?

Also any general resources for showing emotion?

Contour lines have helped me a lot when trying to understand form. You have to experiment a lot with it tho; im still in the early stages of it but its pretty fun. Basically how the lines would wrap around the form.

When you draw on a piece of paper, you are creating the illusion of three dimensions in two dimensions. Imagine if you were drawing a line on a sphere. If you were drawing on an actual sphere in real life, like maybe a tennis ball, it wouldn't actually be a straight line floating in space. It would wrap around the sphere. Pic related was a 5 second attempt at explaining this.

Also ease up on your pressure with your lines. It's a sketch, so you don't have to push down hard, nor do you have to make it one perfect line. If you try to draw a perfect line on sketching, you're going to drive yourself crazy. Use short, light strokes for sketches.

you might be able to find butcher paper instead of newsprint, it's a bit thicker than newsprint but you can get a huge roll of it

as long as you're learning the concepts you're fine. if you get to a point where you want to push your works to be more refined, you will have to get higher quality paper for that. watts himself doesn't push his work that far in the videos, but in the atelier itself they make people render the work more, I think

I will look into butcher paper, thank you for the tip my man. Yeah, I personally believe I understand the concepts, just executing them well is still hard. But I feel that is normal, this is the first week I ever used char coal or really worked with purely values, so I takes repetition and just plain old hard work to be able to pull these concepts off to a higher degree and maybe even better materials like you say.
