Good points man! Didn't mean to highjack this thread or anything. I always fuck my pieces by rendering everything. It's just that the other character in the scene was partially created in ZBrush so I think I have to put extra detail on my 2D work for the other character... I haven't worked like this before so I don't really know what I'm doing. Everythin is still highly unfinished...

Hampton's actually pretty good but that's what gets me; he just beat Steve Huston to the publisher's office. That said, good information is good information and he compartmentalizes it well-but the fact the guy can only draw one identical goofy looking face is definitely something to consider when he gets to the point in the book where he's explaining the head.

I was being pretty harsh on Hampton but other than learning about structure, a lot of people will fall into the trap of just blindly copying him when there's better options available. The information is good, his drawings (the figures, not the structural diagrams) are not.

Take Hogarth for example, amazing information, really good for understanding structure, but I'd stay away from copying his bubble men.

Analytical figure drawing is about breaking down and simplifying the complex as fuck human body. For example, imagining the torso and pelvis as boxes helps you understand how it tilts and leans without having to delve into muscles, this is good information but I'd stay away from copying his finished figures unless you actually want to draw like Hampton.

I love drawing knees because if you just keep the few key forms there you can literally just wing everything else and it'll look good. In fact, the more you just fucking mess around the better. It's relaxing when you can just lean back and turn your brain off for a while.

Even the masters of ol' used reference for every single painting. They also do more than sketching, which gives you a little wiggle room for anatomical errors while full on rendering you kinda need to be spot on.
