I hate being the "help me with my hw" guy but this art theory project is really preying on my weak points.

>You are a curator for an exhibition of contemporary art created since 1980, a common benchmark for the "death of modernism." You are charged with developing an exhibition theme or thesis focusing on an issue that effects contemporary U.S. culture.

>You have been retained by the Virtual Museum of Contemporary Art to curate an exhibition. Your charge is to design and implement an exhibition of post-1980 contemporary American art exploring an issue that affects contemporary American society. You are responsible for collecting the works, ordering them into a coherent narrative based on an exhibition thesis, writing exhibition label text, and designing the exhibition. You are also responsible for writing a critical essay contextualizing the exhibition.

>You will propose an organizing theme or topic for the exhibition, a theoretical focus, and research and decide upon how to organize it: which artists to participate, which works, and what order. Your exhibition should contain a minimum of 6 works up to a maximum of 12. The works may NOT be works discussed at length in the course text, but you may choose artists who are discussed.

>What is the difference between a theme and a topic, and how does one go about choosing and developing either? The short answer is simply that a topic is global, whereas a theme is more specific. So where "Beauty" might be a topic, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is a theme. Ideas about themes and topics will be discussed in class. Once a theme or topic has been identified, a draft proposal for the exhibition can be developed.

Can anyone riff me some ideas? or at least namedrop some good post 1980 artists?

AggregateMdul is located on /Programs/CELSYS/CLIPStudio 1.5 EN/Common/AggregateMdul/AggregateMdul.exe , it sends Logs. You can deactivate it inside CSP:
Gear drop-down menu --> Maintenance --> Do not send anonymous usage log. It is unlikely to be the culprit for CSP not launching though.
Begin with the most simple check: Right Click on CLIPStudio.exe (the real file, not the shortcut) and select
Trouble Shoot Compatibility. The Wizard should offer you to launch it with new parameters. Do this and report here.

In Photoshop you can follow up a curved path with a straight path in the pen tool easily by using the alt key and converting the previous anchor point. Is there a similar functionality in Inkscape? I'm having a hard time finding it if so. The problem is it just transitions from one path to the other instantly so I'm not really able to mess with it as far as I can tell.

Can someone share an art schedule to help develop strong fundamentals? can be daily, weekly or flexible enough to build on its self as you progress. I saved pic related a while back, and i've seen some others but didnt save them.

I have about 5 hours a day to work on art btw. was thinking something along the lines of:

>Hour 1: work from a book(go through /ic/ recommended fundamental books). Do exercises in the books- stuff like form, line, perspective etc.
>Hour 2: Faces / Figure drawing. Alternate between the two. Use picture references if needed
>Hour 3: specific body part (nose, mouth, hands, feet, etc). Use anatomy book.
>Hour 4: Life drawing. Draw from life; sketch outdoors, friends, still life.
>Hour 5: Free / Creativity. Work on personal projects, experiment with different styles and different mediums, do whatever you want.

Goes w/o saying but not doing 5 consecutive hours, but throughout the day. Thoughts, improvements, different schedules?

How do you even measure that? also what type of artist?

I dont know much about video games so i dont know how much opportunity there is for gamers, but my guess would be its easier to be a professional (commercial) artist. Mostly if you know graphic design, a little web development and arent super autist, can talk to people, and are willing to try finding paying clients.

>How do you even measure that? also what type of artist?
Yeah of course you can't really measure that, and for what type of artist, I'd say some kind of freelance illustrator that earns enough money to survive.
I suppose, despites the fact that it's still pretty hard to get a professional level in illustration for most people, it's probably easier than pro gaming yeah. I'm mediocre in both and I wanted to try and chose in which one to focus my efforts on, but I suppose that for pro gaming, you have to be in the top skilled to make money. In illustration you can probably have average skills and just be clever with communication/sharing (like some artists that are not that good but make tons of views polishing fanarts of trendy stuff)

>In illustration you can probably have average skills and just be clever with communication/sharing (like some artists that are not that good but make tons of views polishing fanarts of trendy stuff)
Thats why i would think artist would be easier.

Like i said, i dont know much about video games but some of my friends who were gamers in high school spent like 18 hours a day playing. If half of that into art either through art school, a well thought out plan, or maybe even just doing it, you'd be in pretty good shape after 1-2 years.
After that, if you're willing to do commercial work its just about being proactive and knowing the things you need to do in order to get clients.

If you were trying to choose, assuming you do like art(most people do, they're just not confident in themselves), def go for it; it'll be a lot more rewarding.

>when i color pick from the environment and brush it on with reduced opacity it doesn't look right most of the time.

You need to think of the environment as colored light sources.

Let's say you have an apple lit by a lamp. If you color pick the light bulb, then brush that onto the apple at a reduced opacity it would also look like shit.

The problem here is you aren't thinking about how colored light affects different materials of different colors. A blue ball will absorb most wavelengths of light, and reflect mostly blue light. This object will appear brightest and richest under white light light, similar but not quite as vibrant under blue light (because in the real world it's reflecting some other colors subtly and not just blue). This same object will appear dull and dark under red light or green light - when there's little blue light present in the source, the object can't reflect what isn't there.

Best way to go about learning these color relationships is studying it from life - different colored lights with different colored objects. You could also simulate it to an extent in 3D programs. It helps to know additive color mixing when thinking about light.

Thank you for the detailed response anon. My options for studying from life are pretty limited. I was thinking I might do an exercise where I try to integrate objects into photos, as in pic related. Seems like a good way to study how light affects different colors to me. Am I mistaken? Even doing that relatively simple exercise, it felt like a lot of guesswork went into my process for choosing stuff like saturation and value.

Do you (or anyone) have recommendations for further reading on additive color mixing?

It's more about money. If you can spare some on a purchase that may or may not stick around then go for it.

If you are complete novice the only pro to the tablet is that you won't need to bother with sharpening pencils, getting new paper and such things. Also you will have to get used to how input works, plus learn a little bit how graphical editors work. May take from a week to a month.

Best case would be to borrow it and see if you fancy it.

Draw 500 eyes and think about it again.

First you will try to imitate realism as best you can.
Then you will find a way to simplify the process with symbols you come up with yourself.
From these symbols you can create stylised eyes.
Since you can create stylised eyes with correct symbols, making realistic eyes is only a matter of learning the small details.

These are not instructions, this is the natural way of optimisation you will gravitate to. All you need to do is keep an eye (heh) on the quality, keep checking if your symbols are accurate or you will end up with freakish tumblr eyes.

i bought a wacom bamboo for $80. there was a bump in the surface, and whenever I went over it, it would make this quick striahgt line over the bump if I was making a curve or somthing. I send it in for a replacement and the next one has the same problem, or the cursor is very jittery.

and the $80 tablet has like a 6x9" surface. like are you fucking kidding me? how are you supposed to draw large, sweeping lines on a postcard?

for $5 you can get an 11x18 pad and $10 gets you a pencil set that will last you a month if you use it every day.

Make a challenge for yourself. Make the act of drawing and seeing your progress at the end the fun part, instead of coming up with one finished piece. That's important, but actually doing something is more so.

Examples:
>I will draw one portrait each day for 14 days
>I will do 20 minutes of gestures each day for the rest of this sketchbook
>Once a week I'll fully colour/finish an image and share it on /beg/ or on my social media
>I will read through X book, copying every diagram and doing all the exercises

etc. etc.

I found that doing 30 second gestures every day made me feel more confident in just making things. Not perfect, but as close as I could get in the limited conditions. "Art Challenges" that you see on youtube are kinda dumb but working along with them anyway can give you a goal and a time frame

With practicing something for a long time, what tends to happen is we just get into a routine of just mindlessly doing it. In this routine, we don't learn anything fresh and we are more likely to ingrain bad habits as mistakes are not corrected, but enforced with each repetition.

Taking a break also refreshes your vision. I am sure I am not alone where I would think a piece is going well, then come back to it the next day and see that it not as good as I thought it was.

So, I've been drawing for a while now and have gotten relatively competent, but I feel like I've stagnated, partially as a result of drawing without a goal, a plan or a purpose.
I figured the next step for me is to go back to basics, and I want to go through the equivalent of an art academy. I realize I can't get feedback without actually going to one, but other than that, what's the closest I can get emulating an art academy education?
I feel I need to be directed, given a course plan, follow lessons and so on.

Is Villpu a good place to start? Should I just download the videos and start from there?

Happens to everyone, especially self taught. More than likely your "gains" have evened out, but you're still thinking you should be progressing in bounds and leaps.

Before you go throwing down a bunch of cash on tutors or academies, pull up a few pieces from your favorite artists you would want to emulate. Take 30 min to an hour, and draw/ paint it side by side. After the time, compare. You're not looking for photocopy quality, just the broad strokes. Look at what your major mistakes were: value, perspective, anatomy, etc.

Now put the piece away, and do it from memory for the same amount of time. Again, compare. Are the mistakes pretty much in the same category as when you had reference?

If you are finding the same mistakes, those fundamentals will your first target.

"But anon, you incorrigible dick-goblin, I asked how to emulate an academic art education". The most crucial component of art education is expert critiques. Unless you're willing to shell out the cash for it, you'll be living on a prayer asking for feedback in most communities. All the tutorials in the world will only get you so far so fast without expert feedback. Thus the master works serve as your guidance.

Can it be done without having a master's direct input? Of course. Plenty do it. But is it the fastest or academic way? No.

There were two artists who really spoke to me through the medium and use of line and I finally "got it" and started aping shape language and little bits of technique from other artists to find my own voice.

This can lead to bad habits if it's the only thing you do or what you copy is shit, but shamelessly ripping a single artist's style to build up a robust vocabulary makes you a lot more confident and being confident makes the process easier because you're less stressed and lost about what to do.

watch perspective videos and do what they do with rulers so you can't fuck it up.

you can also open up some 3d software, do a cube and copy it, spin the camera around it, change the camera lens (some software lets you do this) and always copy.

check out moderndayjames videos on perspective, they're really easy to follow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAlCyQqEZSU

if that's too hard you can try the scott robertson's basic perspective videos

and grid through but don't only do cubes come on. draw some cubes or perspective stuff but also draw other stuff mostly.

I feel like their is a point where the work changes to, at the very least, a collaborative project. I can understand how shopping titties onto someone wouldn't be considered art (that pic was practise for matching skin tones; ended up just grey scaling, then painting the colour in). However, does changing the point of an image from something such as a portrait to something intended to "tell a story" count as adding artistic value? Spacing is also a variable. With low spacing you get more overlap between each applied tip, which can easily build up to near 100% opacity.
You can increase the spacing on the brush, although it will end up looking less smooth. Something else you can do is make a new brush with innate transparency (define a new brush that is about 80% transparent or light grey). That way you account for the low spacing and it effectively gives your flow setting more range.

And those ellipses all over the book. Which is called "how to draw", but it expect me to have few decades of draftsman skill.

Can anyone here even freehand those ellipses that will perfectly fit there? Or is this some stupid shit and everyone just make it digitally anyway.

Anon, drawing a few lines really isn't that hard.
I don't really get the point of this though, (haven't read the book) seems to me like it would be easier to do the grid first.

Are there any brands of kneaded eraser I should avoid? I'm looking to get a pack and I have some pretty bad luck choosing art supplies. Any recommendations welcome as well
