I'm working on a different method, painting a first layer of just light and dark (titanium white and cobolt blue in this case, plus linseed oil), then painting the mid tones with just those colours, blended wet-on-wet on canvas. If anyone has a guide to "proper grisaille" methods or relevant artists or something I'm glad to hear. the middle of the reflection in the water looks great, but it does not look good on the right nor does the blue shadow on the roof on the left look good. shadows (and i assume reflections) have to do with layering. look up a tutorial on how to do them easily. i'm going to bet that if you copied the image, flipped it, and then put layers of color/blur, etc., over it, it would look like water

don't try to make reflections/shadows by finding the right color and putting it down. you need to put the right color down, then add layers of darkness to make the shadow. like in real life i guess

If lines are statements, you're trying to say too much, all at once, with no logical structure. Simplify your ideas, give them some space to breathe.
Instead of one confusing tangled line, use a simple C curve and a straight to give it an extra punch. The ear or the silhouette of the nose is where it's the most notable.

I also don't understand why you'd pick such a complicated model and draw it from different angles just to practice contours. Maybe breaking the head down into simple forms, kinda like Peter Han does, would've been more beneficial? Dunno.

no it's not. why would I lie to some anon on an ottoman woodworking board?
If you want evidence for it, when I posted the lineart for the character alone it was at the same tilted angle in this image. If I drew it as a solo character, I would have drawn it upright.

As I said most often when I try to translate a sketch/thumb into an actual drawing, some awful things go on that destroy most of the idea. Not always, but often.

one example is this: I did a design of a car that I thought was pretty cool, but the perspective was wonky. I tried to redo it while fixing a perspective grid, but it completely destroyed the design. I tried on another grid and it still destroyed the design. Unfortunately I don't have the scans to show it, but it's one of the major things that hamper me: how do you get from gesture/thumb to full perspective drawing while retaining essential qualities of the drawing?

rant over, but if anybody has tips I'll go read/watch/learn.

first of all, turning the head puts the eyes closer together. Many beginners make this mistake. Necks are not cylinders. Mouth should be higher and to the right. Study lip anatomy to get a sense of how the masses come together and connect with the area under the nose. Ear is way to small. Ears should be from the top of the eyebrow to the bottom of the nose. Hand anatomy is trash. Choker is not in perspective. I really like most of your rendering though.

What difference does a tiny line or a thick straight make when it comes to conveying form? Detail, yes, but that's literally the least important part of your drawing.

Straight lines are no crutch, disregard whoever told you that bullshit. Again, think of lines as statements. A curve is melodic, graceful and elusive, while a straight is a bold statement - it tells you exactly where it starts, where it stops and what angle it is. Which is when doing studies, you should use them a lot, for block in, for measuring etc.
Even in creative work, squeezing in a little straight makes a curve look even curvier and more graceful in contrast.

I think you might find it enlightening to try a few plates from Charles Bargue's drawing course, hm?
Don't get me wrong, your observation is pretty gud, it's just some minor misconceptions about portraying form you could improve.
I also can't recommend enough Drawabox and Dynamic sketching for some quality line and form exercises.

I don't know whether that's a finished piece or not but I really like where it's going. You should look into playing around with line weight a bit more, since some parts (such as the table legs) have lines that are too thick. You can also play around with adjusting the colors of the lineart depending on the immediate surroundings but if you wanna stay black because of a style choice then that's more than fine.

And if you were planning on getting to that anyways, then disregard my advice.

fuck anon, you've got an amazing eye for colors! The first thing that really pops out as off is the breasts, and general chest area. The breasts too high and too scooted to the left, and the whole chest looks unnaturally wide. Remember the breasts hang a bit lower on the pecks, you should try painting a nude version of the chest to get a better look at how you're positioning everything with all of the anatomy in place.

two other less important things, is that the raised hand looks slightly too big, and her bangs almost merge with her forehead, you should try adding at least a little bit of shadow to separate them more.

a couple of nitpicks: the hand shouldn't be bigger than the face. the breasts look like they're positioned wrong,

Hey, that's a pretty cool animal. Never knew a thing like that existed. I think you might want to spend a little more time on your studies. You got the colors right and the thumbnail looks great but you need to learn to imply materials better. Many artists have said that the best way to learn materials is to do it the hard/slow way first and then start figuring out which steps you can leave out.

I also recommend watching this:

It's nothing fancy but it's only ~12 minutes and you get the general idea of rendering fur.

Time to abandon this one. I'm way off- there is no resemblance which means i need to stop painting in color and go back grey scales in order to improve on proportions. Learn from my mistake of neglecting a critical foundation in art.

Because the foreground and its object have the same values as the mountains in the distance. Looks flat as hell despite the neat colors. Just desaturate the image, paint over what values they should be, then take note and repaint with the same hues in the new correct value/saturation.

honestly I think if you just add some atmospheric perspective and desaturate the mountains a bit it would pop more. That said, I find the over-the-top saturation of the original kind of charming, like i'd hang that somewhere in the house. Then again i'm a sucker for orange and blue contrast.

This is really nice! Got that Rick & Morty vibe going in their eyes. I gotta admit I sort of prefer the one with the line art though. If you want to do it without lines you'd need to be more precise with the direction of the light. It looks like both of the kids faces were lit from the front when it doesn't seem to be the case elsewhere in your image.

Peter Stapleton made some stuff that's at least rendered similarly. Maybe you should check out some of his process videos for some lighting tips:

Apart from this image looking like two staked upon each other, your composition is very bad.
Where should I look in this image, everything is overly prominent with no sense of direction.
Hell, even the environment doesn't make any sense. Where are these huge water masses coming from when there is nothing but mountains surrounding it.
Please think before you mindlessly slap textures on a poorly drawn thumbnail.
