It's interesting to see how he gets atmospheric perspective and depth in environment work but his portrait work is very often flat and he never pushes the value ranges when he does these. Again, people can brush the lack of value ranges in his faces as a matter of stylistic choice.

Loose obviously means different things for different people, but ruan jia obviously he doesn't invest himself in it that much. There are artists out there who are just better painters than line drawers, and vice versa. Knowing how to draw precisely definitely makes painting easier, but it's not a 1 to 1 kind of thing.
Ruan has said himself that he's aware of his weaknesses, but what some anons miss is that he's still good enough at it to let his painting skills carry the rest to convey his ideas to the finished product people see. Long hair in his rendering tends to looks like pasta strips. The image you linked is a good example of that.

A few of his short haired male (I think? too androgynous to tell who is male and who is female in his work to be honest) hair renderings are slabs of volume that you would expect on a sculpture, except sculptures unify them quite well to represent one whole whereas his tends to look thrown together and amateur.

Finally, his attempts at rendering smaller, thinner groups (example: >>3210135 ) don't resemble hair at all. It looks like some crazy transparent silk with all sorts of colors flying everywhere. He showed what reference he used for that particular image and I think he was just making shit up as he went along.

I understand that it's stylized. His skin rendering is great. His armors are great. His hair is terrible and destroys most of his work for me, because he tends to have _a lot_ of hair on his characters.

How so?

Wei Feng doesn't seem to have a good feel for material variety. Ruan Jia tends to have a balance of rough and specular materials, plus a better feeling for plane directions, and all of that underlies fairly loose, abstract brush work. I would also argue that his values and shape design are a level higher.

I love Wei Feng though, I just don't think he's quite good enough to "destroy" RJ. I don't think any digital artist alive is so good that they make RJ look amateur.
