IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I think you should first work on shading. It looks great, but very messy! Though, this might be a style choice. Some like it when you see rough lines like this, but to me, it looks pretty messy so far. You should clean it up when you make a new one.

Oh and if you mean that question by starting art, I suggest starting by with simple things. Draw shapes, things you think are easy like flowers or figurines etc. I started with flowers and differents shapes when I started. It's also good to mimic a drawing to get used to mimicing what you can see. Try drawing from a reference something simple like mickey mouse or other cartoon characters. When you have done this often enough, use those shape drawing practices to start practising shading, then go with studying anatomy. Just do what you like, but remember to draw every day, even if its just something small and practice on things.

Your perspective needs a lot of work in your background.

Don't guess perspective. Perspective is one those things best left to rulers and measurements until you understand it very well. You also can't do perspective in a small frame like that. you need to make a much bigger canvas and do it outside the frame of your image. Look up basic 2 point and 1 point, perspective. It's very easy to learn basic perspective. Just know buildings and stuff should all line up to vanishing points.

Well you either rushed trough it or you are full of shit.

Your piece has no flow or framing

Not to mention that your strokes are taught as unfitting unless you want flow to feel going more than one direction (like your drawing does, it feels all over the place)

Try redoing it, and this time:
1-use a more interesting angle than a 3/4 view and a framing less flat of your main focus subject
2-make less effort doing your strokes, your lines look like they took effort, male them more relaxed and make 1 line with a bigger brush rather than several with a fine point pencil. Try using a crayon or a marker if you don't want brushes.

You named 3 yourself, there's not anything else to comment on.
The sloppy linework is particularly distracting and the thickness of the chicken scrawl doesn't really hide the underlying anatomy issues. Her left calf looks broken, the left thigh seems either too thin or the knee is too high, her right hand is really badly drawn and sticks out, the lighting is inconsistent, especially around the lower legs.
Did you omit the face because you got bored/tired or because you think you can't get it right? Any effort is better than none.
The image is not bad though, you do seem to have an understanding of the body, it's just that you still have to work on it. Keep going!

Draw a box!

If you want to draw that more realistically, be aware to not simplify it. That box is not a perfect box. you can see how the top under the flaps protrude a little that you can actually see some of the left flap as it goes back towares the center. The flaps are not just 1 dimensional, as they have a top side to them and just drawing the slimmest of the top can push that the object is a 3 dimensional.

Some people find drawing from photographs easier because it removes the binocular disparity but best not only draw from photographs just because its easier.

So do you just have a instinctual understanding of values or something?
Every time I try to follow beginner material it always just seems to assume you perfectly understand gradients and shit and every other beginner I see seems to get it perfectly yet whenever I try shading it looks completely off... am I just retarded? Are my eyes broken?

>> No.3210369

>>3210366
no, it's learned. maybe it's somewhat instinctual, like you can generally tell the distinction between two shades side by side, it's when they're in a gradient that you lose the ability. that's something most people have trouble with though. it's a constant challenge of comparing values that you have to rinse and repeat.

a good way to practice (from my own experience) is to estimate the value of a certain area, and then eye drop or hold up to compare, see how far or close you were. it gets easier over time but it does take time. you can do it, anon

You're also right when you said that I made it all messy just to make it look better. Don't hatch randomly. Hatch along contour lines and in different directions with different spacing to give different values.

You've kind of pulled this off on the right side of the drawing on the claws/legs, but you need to hatch closer together to give us those dark values on the leg.

Lastly, don't hatch everything. Hatching is a very rare texture to see in nature, and for the top of the shell you will likely want to replace this with a series of bumps of increasingly finer density to replicate both texture and value. Crabs are not hairy.

>>3210155
You should go darker. Buy some charcoals or softer pencils (6B or 8B). And those heavy outlines look very cartoonish.

>>3210311
Your anatomy is awful - just because you're making an fantastical creature doesn't mean that you can put muscles in completely random places and expect to make something believable. Because there's just as much brightness and details on it's legs as on it's hands it looks flat. Silhouette isn't very clear. Lighting is a bit inconsistent; you could double check it.

>>3210464
It's ok to do studies, but it's more important to draw from imagination - you don't want to end up like Proko, do you?

Filthy hobbyist.

>>3210845
Try working with higher resolution - your lines will look smoother.
And next time at least try to draw hands and feet.

>>3211116
Your lighting is inconsistent, its abdomen looks really flat because of that. Try shading it more like a big elongated ball, rather than shading each segment on it's own.

If you're not sure, then you're not good enough. Try studying someones linework rather than trying to learn it on your own.

Hoggarth I say is pretty advanced. Many problems stem from not actually trying the concepts.

If someone says you fry an egg by cooking it in oil in heat. You could burn the egg several times. Undercook it / break the yolk etc. Eventually you'll find the exact temperature yourself, how long you can leave it for l, very few gets it perfect the first time around and when starting without much experience failing at the simple task can be disheartening.

Drawing is like that with 10,000x more repetitions. Redo their excercises every month and keep drawing with what you have learnt. Understanding comes through constant failures.

as for the flaws in it:
the table is unreasonably tilted
the right ventral arcing column is incomplete
the sofa and table arent central
the perspective on some of the trinkets are wrong
the hanging ornaments arent vertical
the right side in general is just incomplete

Are you rendering in zigzag like? Don do it if you do.

If it’s me I will separate the studies, if you are trying to understand human anatomy and you are no good shading. Do value studies with simple forms separated from the human stuff.

Most of the human stuff is pure gesture, just with the gesture half of the drawing is done. Believe me.

If you are trying to copy what you see the block in process is what you need.

separating sounds good, i am mostly trying to get down proportions and basic anatomy at the moment because i want to draw muh cute animuh girls someday.

well i am using reference but my aim isn't like a 100% bargue copy. as i mentioned i try to build the forms of head/ribcage, pelvis and then flesh it out , basing that fleshing out on the reference for now but not being 100% anal about complete accuracy tho i do try to get close to the pose i see in the ref pic.

pic was the ref btw, looking at it now after taking a break i notice ofc all kinds of stuff that isn't quite right, but i guess it is always like this, gotta try harder on the next drawing

The only things you need is the pressure sensitivity setting in brush settings And a good arm. You control your line weight there.

Ghost your lines over the sketch in a separated layer then with confidence make the strokes. You can cheat wrapping your lines too.
Is not easy if you can’t control your whole arm.

Brush presets are for simulation of natural media, abstraction, to get easy repetitive shapes, randomness.

Define the starting point and the ending point, then connect the two.

For a cube, it would be two differently orientated squares in perspective to start with. Then you would connect each corresponding corner.

Alternatively, you could focus on one twisting plane at a time. Start with one plane, then define the ends and fill in the rest.
