IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

The point of the 4 seconds to draw thing is gesture drawing, it's training your eye to look past details and find the poses, mostly for mileage and it will help keep your poses dynamic and from looking stiff

if you don't want to do that thats fine, you can usually find the croquis cafe models for dl in the book/resource thread

Guys, I have a problem. I love art, and I love drawing. Just based on the work I can put out when I actually put in the effort, I know I have real genuine potential to be a great artist one day.

But... For whatever reason, it's really fucking hard to get myself to draw every day. Or even once a week. It's like I'm instinctively compelled to do anything else, like video games or movies. And no matter how much I consciously want to draw, I always just end up doing those things anyway. I hate it, and it makes me hate myself. I feel guilty, and like I'm cheating myself by not doing what I should be doing.

I want so badly to break my terrible habits, but every time I try, it seems like it just makes it worse. I don't know what to do. It seriously breaks my heart every time I see my old artwork and knowing that I haven't done jack shit recently.

How do I break out of this... I guess rut? How do I fundamentally change everything about myself so that I can actually achieve my art goals?

Set a goal of one hour a day as a minimum. Typically I tell myself that when I'm feeling lazy and end up drawing quite a bit.

If you can't even do that, then delete all your video games and other distracting shit.

If you can't EVEN do that then you clearly do not want to draw badly enough so go do something else until next year when you severely regret not having started today.

The chest does not make up the majority of the torso, nor does it totally fill out the upper corners. It's actually quite small, and *roughly* the same width as the hips at its fattest section. The extra size of the torso comes from the addition of shoulders, the large space between the chest and the hips, etc.

That's not true. One of my favorite things is when I start a drawing and just get lost in it, and end up doing way more than I planned to.
The immense satisfaction I get from completing a painting is unmatched by anything else I've ever done.

The excitement I feel when I realize I can draw something now that I couldn't before, the joy I feel when people like my artwork... those feelings can't be replicated by any other activity. I don't fantasize about being able to draw like I might, say, mastering martial arts, because I know that it's completely within my grasp to do.
I do really enjoy drawing, and I have no shortage of reasons to draw. It's the task of getting myself to start. It's the fact that I've been stuck with bad habits since long before I ever realized I wanted to take art seriously. I don't know how to break them.

(You may have seen this one around before, but it's seriously one of the last things I managed to actually work on. Most recently was a crocodile sketch a few days ago.)

I am a bit confused because i can't read japanese, but what is the second method on the right supposed to be? Patchy value. Answer?

Use big hard brush.
Break down the shapes, shadow and light, if you have time make little thumbnails of value compositions.
Think before make the strokes.
Do not over render.
When painting with big brushes zoom out and paint the big shapes first.
When painting the medium shapes with a midi brush size some in a little.
Then details.

All this is what we need to do. The problem is.. it is easy to say it then apply it. I won’t lie to you. I have problems too but with practice we will master it.

Along with missing a lot of major angles towards the bottom, I recommend you work with plumb lines, you also lack form and mass your drawing looks incredibly flat.

Think spatially, define the major masses with cubes and cylinders and carve out those shapes into the ribs and pelvis etc... Then add contour lines to define muscles and other things on top. Good luck!

I can see how timed figure drawing can be of help in teaching you to focus on essential shapes instead of detail but 30 sec-1 min is not nearly enough to draw even the sticks without feeling rushed.

The idea is that you're supposed to capture the "big idea" as fast as possible. No matter what area of art (when painting, block in the big forms instead of going into details first for example) so in figure drawing the less you muck around with the minute intricacies of a pose, the better you're getting the idea of the pose down.

This may seem like a silly question but how should I draw gestures?
Should I just be making stick figures?
Should I be drawing bean/robobeans?
Should I be drawing a mannequin?
So far I have been drawing them like this, and I'm not sure if this is too much or not enough detail, and looking at what places like prokos videos show is just confusing me more.
Any advice?
Do these look correct?

Not bad. It does show form but it's the same lines everywhere. Look at the cloth on his feet. It looks like a chicken feet.

Follow the light source and most importantly define the form. Everything have it's own texture and form. Don't use the same hatching you do for the body on the clothing.

Yeah, it's not really a shape, more like the flow of your figure.

It's basically an extremely simplified skeleton.

It helps you visualize which part goes where and how they all relate to each other (proportions).
This whole process shouldn't take you more then 30 seconds to do, and once you have a general idea then you can start filling the shapes in for your figure.

It really depends on what you want to do.

The drawings you posted aren't really gesture drawings. What you're doing is simply trying to draw the outline for the shapes.

Gesture drawing would be more like what >>3209267 posted.
It shows the flow of the figure, and most of the time these kind of drawings can get very abstract.

Figure drawing on the other hand is all about structure.
If you want to realistically represent the shape of what you are trying to draw then I suggest starting from a solid foundation like >>3209239 then working your way up from there.

Hopefully this wont get buried here but....

Can someone share an art schedule to help develop strong fundamentals? can be daily, weekly or flexible enough to build on its self as you progress. I saved pic related a while back, and i've seen some others but didnt save them.

I have about 5 hours a day to work on art btw. was thinking something along the lines of:

>Hour 1: work from a book(go through /ic/ recommended fundamental books). Do exercises in the books- stuff like form, line, perspective etc.
>Hour 2: Faces / Figure drawing. Alternate between the two. Use picture references if needed
>Hour 3: specific body part (nose, mouth, hands, feet, etc). Use anatomy book.
>Hour 4: Life drawing. Draw from life; sketch outdoors, friends, still life.
>Hour 5: Free / Creativity. Work on personal projects, experiment with different styles and different mediums, do whatever you want.

Goes w/o saying but not doing 5 consecutive hours, but throughout the day. Thoughts, improvements, different schedules?

Am I just not cut out for art?
I enjoy drawing when I make something that looks good, but I can't actually sit down and do "fundamentals" or anything because it bores the fuck out of me. I don't want to draw a bunch of random bodies and still lives, I want to draw cool shit! I took a class and it was just months of still lives in charcoal and shit. That was money that I fucking wasted.
I also suck at just sitting down and drawing because I get discouraged when it looks like shit.
This sucks coming from being a musician, because music is so fucking easy when you compare it to art. Though maybe that's because I've been playing musical instruments since I was 6.
I don't know. I know what I want to draw in a general concept, but when it comes to actually drawing a picture I can't do that because I have no visualization in my head of what it's going to look like.
Am I just really over thinking all of this?

Right now, I suggest you work on your drawing skills before you attempt another painting.

When I tried to get an eye art style, I experimented for a while instead of literally looking at one tutorial and saying "I can do this let's go to another thing".
