Neato Brian(?), some of it looks kinda funky though. That arm (not holding the pencil) in particular looks off, maybe too many sharp edges and corners? idk. It's kinda interesting the way you framed the eye between the two clumps of hair. The blue/green cold tones on the eye also look noice. Not a fan of how you did the rest of the hair though, looks almost wig-like. Solid piece for the most part mang.

You need to practice with values and colors a lot more. Also your process needs some serious work.

Make a clean sketch, put down a color for the background, base colors, then you block in shadows, smooth out the soft shadows and clean up your hard shadows, then render and detail.

Not much to be done about you until you learn the right process.

learn how to use line to effectively describe the form. There's a bunch of random squiggles in your drawings. Cut the lines down to just the essentials.

You also keep drawing ugly old balding men

>> No.3208456

>>3208377
this is really helpful thanks. i can clearly see that yours is infinitely more appealing with only a few changes. is it possible to use all of these numerous rhythm lines to describe form, is it something im currently failing at or that i shouldnt be attempting at all?

>ugly old men
how not to?

on the topic of lineweight. i dont use it always (not here) but i do every now and then. would i be correct in saying that it would be good to have a 3 caliber system? as in 3 for the outline, 2 for the heavier detail and 1 for the lighter detail. this gives me a thicker outline and two levels of internal direction of form. correct?

once again thanks

>> No.3208494

>>3208456
Be critical in your use of line. If you want to experiment and put in a random line down for fun, analyze whether it actually adds to the drawing or not.

I think you should put your style to the side for a bit while you study some loomis heads. Out of all the meme instructors, he draws the most appealing faces.

Line variation isn't just about thickness btw. For a more subtle effect, just vary the opacity and softness of the linesa bit.
But yes, it would be good to have some sort of system for line weights. Three levels works great because you'll have the object outline, general outline, and details.

If traditional?
Depends on size and medium used.
If I use pen or ink brush I usually prefer to draw at a tilted table. Drawing on a flat surface makes my back want to sudoku.
If I work larger than my table allows (>a2) and especially when using pencil or coal, I like to mount it on a wall. I rarely draw using an easel since I think they take up too much physical space.

i take care that the values and colors would stand on their own without an outline, but an absorbent ground and thinned blue outlines are important to my drawing process since the pencil barely shows up on the grey linen. I think the main problem is that I am making the outlines too thick, but I am in the process of thinning a lot of the elements of my work (something I'm surprised nobody has commented on yet), such as making eyes smaller, something that has really elevated my work beyond simple caricature because I'm not as concerned with having the likeness in the eyes, and putting the likeness in the outline and form instead.

Idk if you noticed in my previous work but I was making the eyes huge, which always made my work especially cartoonish.

you're over stylizing the eyes. They're over-rendered and waaaaay too big.

For the most part the only time you should ever make eyes big is when the model has freakishly large eyes, and then that is pivotal to the likeness (some people have big old bug eyes), but big eyes are usually for children. So don't be creepy and give all your attractive 20 something girls big eyes. It's degenerate and pedophilic.

Try to look at Picasso's Neoclassical art. You'll see when he used eyes of different sizes to create different aesthetics. It wasn't just all one size eye, despite what modern ideas of stylization might make you think (all eyes aren't big anime eyes, don't be ridiculous, you aren't autistic and can only draw one type of eye).

Big eyes like I said either make the face look small and they swim in the forms of the head making the entire drawing boring, or it's pedophilic anime stuff like Kronzprinz which we really don't need more of.

I like these, but as the other anons have mentioned, the focal point is a bit all over the place and everything is just a tad dark and muddy. First one is my personal favorite, tho. It just needs a bit more atmospheric perspective, some areas of light (where the sun shines though the caverns) and a bit more focus on the figure in the foreground, possibly a slight touch of rimlight to make him seem like a 3D object that catches light rather then a flat black cardboard cut-out.

the beast design looks pretty generic and bland, both of their stances are static and it really doesnt seem like theyre getting ready to fight one another
there's a couple of anatomy issues on the minotaur, most noticeably that his mid-section lacks mass, his horns look positioned wrong, as does his nose, his legs look very small too
composition-wise, I know it's harder to do since its traditional work but I'd suggest moving the minotaur back and making him larger (or making the barbarian smaller and moving him forward but he's not the one youll need to redraw so)

I get the feeling that you haven't done any thumbnail sketches and are just going with it.
As somebody else said a lower perspective would be better. Also, you need better staging. Right now the composition doesn't feel dynamic at all, the viewer doesn't buy into the threat of the minotaur and the barbarian looks as if he's a hiker reaching for a bottle of water in his backpack while admiring a scenery.

The fact that he's standing on a rock doesn't help the story: he would either trip and fall or need to backtrack to actually hit the thing as it is right now

I've attached a few shitty sketches to illustrate my point. Something as simple as moving the monster's arms and closing the fists could make the battle stance a bit more believable in my opinion.

The design is alright but the image as a whole doesn't read very well. There's a lot of high contrast in places that aren't very interesting or drawn with a lot of care and it's quite distracting. Good facial expression though.

>>3209460
Both the design and drawing are very nice. The intent of the picture is not clear enough though. The first thing I'm looking at is the pecs because it's centered, has high contrast and is highlighted by he blue stripe. Probably not what you were trying to show first. The face is too low contrast and not very expressive, feels like it's missing something. The pose is kinda symmetric and not too expressive either.
You clearly have the skills to make a picture with better storytelling and that would improve your work a lot. The design is nice regardless. I assume that was your primary goal anyway.

>>3208952
I don't mind the outline that much but as the other anon said you would learn a lot from painting with light and shapes. The image is way too muddy right now. It's a shame because it has a lot of qualities.

Hey bud.

So I put the dragon on a new layer, desaturated the background.
That was your first issue, the BG was more saturated than the creature, Also the background has the most contrast (the skyline, windows, and moon) Contrast and saturation draw the eye.

So I saturated your dragon on the new layer and painted over the buildings on the old layer.

Then I put a multiply layer over the dragon to give him a shadow. because the moon is behind him, the side facing us would be the shadow side.

Then I gave him rim lighting to properly light him and give the highest points of contrast. Then I erased some of the multiply layer to show some of the detail on his body, maybe the city lights are lighting him up.

Then I changed the colors with color balance of both the creature and the background to be a complimentary color scheme

You should try zooming in less and zooming out more. If you get the feeling there's something overwhelmingly wrong with your pic, its more likely to be an issue with value, proportion or messiness rather than subtle details or colour shifts. Started playing Transistor and I'm loving the art style, but I can't get the likeness right in terms of facial features. The lack of proper references is fucking me up, and I don't want to search through cutscenes for fear of spoilers.

I'm also faking the hair because it's always been a weakness, and I've been copying/flipping the legs to keep them consistent, which feels like cheating. Bad feels all around, lads: what can I do to improve this while it's still in the line stages? And yes, I realise the pose is extremely boring.

Hey man, if you're serious about this - Google "planes of the head" and do paintings from that. It is what I included to the right of my paintover.

And when you use photo reference make sure it has a distinct light side and distinct dark side. Those shapes really define form. I am going to suppose that the lighting in your reference is ambient and illuminates the whole face evenly. This is a very difficult lighting situation for beginners because it gives you no clues at all as to the FORM of the head. I did a really quick paint on your drawing to show you what it would look like with some volume, created by a specific light source and a shadow side.

I hope this gives you a point of reference when looking for, .. references. As you can see your painting entirely in a small midtone value range.

wow dude thanks for the tips, I think I can make it much better now, I suspected I'd need to add more shadows and forget about the lighting of the original picture because it was just impossible to get it to actually look like a face without shadows, it does have, as you said, very flat ambient lighting (and a couple of filters)

If your practicing never draw heads from the front like that. It l;literally does nothing for you. Sorta reminds me of this.

Anyway, It is never a good idea to have the subjects of your composition looking out of the frame, and if they are looking out of frame there should be some element to lead us back into the composition. Right now the top right corner is empty, the figures are looking to there. The birds' beak is pointing directly out of the comp. The viewer will follow their gaze and line of direction.

>> No.3211450

Well, it depends on your intention. Were you going for a concept piece or an illustration? In the former, a dynamic pose is secondary to showing off the design of the character so this one would do, while in the later I would make the character do something more interesting with those test tubes(?). As it is right now I have no idea what those things are used for. The lack of a background, which I assume is temporary, is also a bit bothersome, especially since the white messes up the value scheme of the image as a whole.

Here's an example of how to take a painting further, just with details.
You said you are trying to improve using a hard brush, and adding details is a great time to use 100% opacity hard brush. The only pressure sensitive modifier I had active was size.

Because you had such a strong foundation of rendering on the piece, all I had to do was add arbitrary hard details. And just in a couple minutes he hippo looked more realistic. I know your reference cant lead you and further, but based on what you have you can make a lot of details up.

I think your rendering on this was great, and you are ready for the detail stage

In my defense, my excuse for the last two months is I've been doing inktober/dinovember drawings every night and I only have about 2 hours max to work on them before I fall asleep. But once this month is over I'll make a note to work on more complex compositions.

Thanks, i'll try more in the future on the background, rather than the boring gradient.

Right now I'm not liking how this texturing is going on the dragon, too smooth, I mostly like the grape.

>>3212575
Yeah it works better as an image now. The background doesn't need to have a lot of detail anyway, it complements well with the green hues of the creature and you put more attention and contrast on the left side. It gives a place for the eye to rest. A few occlusion shadows under the feet and fruit to suggest a ground plane would help as well. I agree about the texture being too similar between the two. Some colder reflections on the wet surface of the fruit might do the trick.

I dig it. it gives me some Silent Hill vibes. Although it sounds difficult to make a good game protagonist you can't really relate to.

It's more just a test for another future project, I wanna do a giant monster game were you wreck shit for fun in 1930's Japan, though I'm taking small steps before taking leaps.

Don't think those desings would work very well for a cheesy kaiju game, they fit more of a Silent Hill vibe like that other guy said

I'd suggest making the hue/translucency/texture different on the monster, maybe a soft fur or smth.
I understand it finds its shelter on grapes, but in this pic it took me a while it's not his inflated belly. Uncanny stuff, I tell ya.

I kinda like the design. The biggest flaw is see is the overexposure. To many areas are almost white when you should have kept it for the lightsources only.
Drawing wise it's not perfectly symmetrical. You can make a flat design, duplicate it in symmetry and use photoshop's perspective tool. That way you gain some time and the result is more accurate.
The design is neat. There might be a bit too much space under the drawers, I'm not sure if those kind of proportions are used IRL.

thanks for tips. I sometimes do it flat and then extend the lines in perspective. But this time i didnt. Proportions are most likely not used irl as i pulled it from my ass.

They're not for the kaiju game, it's just a practice for custom skeleton animation and modelling along with some unreal scripting. Though you are correct partly as they are for a silent hill sorta thing, but you play as the spooky grill and eat people/scare them/drive them mad, as it's something I want to implement. Imagine a script to where if an npc caught sight of you they'd do a certain action like kill their buddy or go on a suicidal rampage basically madness script. From my research this is quite doable within a month or two, following tutorial and watchign unreal workshops.

you have some good ideas here you just need to be aware of shape size, usually you want things in three's, with a variance of size. think large medium small for everything. also you have cool candles, use them for your light logic primarily and use a small secondary light source for volume. I felt the feet took away from the interesting part of the image which is the top, and don't get lazy with the fun details like handles or wood texture, that's the best part about prop design. I liked your design, especially the places where you stuff the scrolls.
