I don't understand what that pole thing is supposed to be. The tree is interfering with it visually and is kinda blocking the guy's line of sight and overall composition. Especially if you plan on detailing the city.

I like the angular style. The hands and faces need some work. More importantly you have to learn to control your values. The backgrounds are too dark compared to the figure which kills the sence of space. Keep the higher contrasts for the objects in the front and use lighter strokes for the background.

>>3199570
Looking good. the picture quality is pretty bad though, take the whole drawing, crop it properly, and adjust the values in photoshop if you plan on posting it online.
The right hand is kinda perpendicular and stiff and whatever she's holding is tangent with the shoulder. Otherwise the drawing and values are very nice.

Just started drawing literally 3 hours ago so here is my first drawing.

I've never been into drawing, until recently; it occurred to me that it could be fun to draw and it might help me get through some tough times.

you've lost some of the wholeness of the form in places - like the back of the hand could have been resolved in a more elegant fashion; right now it's on the verge of having been "carved" into too deeply, too many times, at a somewhat regular interval.

still, lovely stuff. the way you've handled the base of the thumb and the wrist are wonderful.

Maybe make the wings translucent? You could show veins but maybe that would detract to much from the feminiity but (I forget the word for it) you know when you put a flashlight behind your fingers it looks like you can see through your hand and your skin turns bright red? Just a fairly basic chalk brush overlaid with a sea sponge texture. You can build it in Photoshop with the stock brushes.

gotta push your values, try to paint in terms of ambient light. that means you block in a solid color for the general lighting of the entire face(any grey) and his clothes. then you can just render from there, while you can also block in your cast shadows. avoid as much strokes like what you have going on, its not very painterly just makes it look like a shitty mess. be thoughtful and focus on shapes.

Here's another study. A quick grayscale study I colored with gradient maps and some color/multiply/overlay layers. I feel like it might be more efficient to work on my stuff in B&W as coloring stuff in PS is pretty easy. I know I'm probably not getting super painterly results but you can always overpaint dat shit and introduce crazy tones to it (didn't do it here as it was just a quick study thing, but you know...)

Thanks a lot man! I did it by picking the colors from an actual person apart from the highlights and darkest shadows which I'll leave as ~97 black and ~97 white. You can use this layer as color, overlay, multiply or... I dunno. What ever. Just try mixing them. It's not a one step thing! Same goes for the multiply/overlay-stuff you do after that. You want to stack this one layer at a time slowly until you feel like you're getting closer to a more realistic render. Once you think you've got your colors right you blend some shit with a hard 100% smudge brush or a regular hard brush to make your colorfuckery less obvious. Also use some native facial colors and stuff (pic related)

Hope this helps...

Beautiful work on most of this. I really like how you rendered her mid-section and how well it blends with the background.

I feel like the her hand to our right (her left) is a bit stiff. You might want to pose that into something more interesting. The perspective in that arm is also bugging me. I'd also like to see a sharper edge to the wing on our left and you might want to have it angled as it's creating a terrible tangent with her right (our left) arm...

Really nice work anyways!

I'm not trying to mimic Ruan Jia, I just really like his work and it's a big influence for me. If anything, I'm trying to recreate the way he does. I like a lot of the ways he does things, and they speak to me.

I actually didn't have RJ in mind when I did this. This is just how I paint after after exclusively studying Ruan Jia.

It's not like this isn't a way to study light and colour; why not have fun while you're at it and pursue an artist that you admire?

>>3203390

If you feel that your painting is muddy, then try to translate that diagnosis into something tangible in your painting. Odds are, you're not referring to mud having been placed on your monitor.

In this case, I think you felt that the values you've employed are entirely too close together; there are also a number of issues that exacerbate this: The separation of light and shadow on the skin is only a difference of two tones; your lights are at 9(0% brightness) and your shadows at 7(0% brightness). The area that divides the light and shadow is not very distinct, thus the form is not emphasized. You've also utilized textures in those crucial areas, which further breaks up the separation.

And so, the solutions present themselves. You could use a wider range of values to model the face. You could take care to emphasize the forms with crisp, careful transitions from light to shadow, with all the parts in tow; Highlight, Light, Midtone, Core shadow, Shadow. You could keep textures out of those transition zones, to ensure that they read clearly.

And I understand that you may want this piece to feel washed out, bright, and breathy, but there are ways other ways to achieve this. What if you made the background of deep, rich colours that contrast how little colour she has? What if you made the background and her hair full of hard, sharp textures that were all very dark, so they were still unified, and kept her face smooth? You can achieve that feeling without disregarding the physics of light and colour; if you understand those laws, you'll know how to break them without having an unsatisfactory result.

Here's a quick paintover; whether or not it's helpful is another matter entirely, hahaha.

>> No.3203472

>>3203467

Some shitposting here and there bit I also think you should work on your values and especially on your edge control. You don't need to push everything to 100% but you might want to push it just a little bit more.

Also I'd recommend using less strokes for your hair. Look at >>3201434 for example. You don't have to make a million strokes to imply a volume. I'm definitely not saying that you're bad but I think you could be fucking awesome with a little bit of work.

take this overpaint with a grain of salt, your work is quite lovely

although you have a nice textural look i think she'd benefit from some softness especially in her skin and hair. i tried to convey that without losing too much detail

Thank you for the overpaint! I'll try to watch out for tangents better and be more expressive and interesting in the future. (I'm still learning!)

>>3203471
When I say muddy, I just mean that there isn't a proper warm/cool relationship. The whole piece isn't really warm or cool. It's kind of just in the middle, with a bit of both in the light and the shadow. The reason I didn't do anything about it is because I only noticed it after I rendered everything I liked. And I feel like color balancing or adjusting the levels/curves really doesn't do the image enough justice. I really can only comfortably fix this kind of thing by doing it again.

But overall, you've left me with a lot of food-for-thought, and I appreciate you taking the time to write it all out. I'll try to practice some of the ideas you've mentioned, and thank you for the paintover!

>>3203472
That painting is mine. I wasn't trying to use a bunch of tiny strokes to imply volume, I just wanted to experiment with creating some strand-ey texture. Overall, the entire piece was an attempt to create a pleasing texture with the brush strokes. I painted almost all of the piece at about 75% zoom, except for places where I wanted to push some edges and render a bit more on the places of interest. Thank you for the feedback!

The thumbnails for these caught my eye. There's a lot of color but I like it. It definitley reminds me of Goosebumps covers and the color schemes of some old 70/80s comics like Killing Joke (before they changed the colors).
I really like it. I think you would benefit greatly from using a bigger canvas.
Looks to me that you're using colored pencils or some other similar traditional medium?
The edges on it all are just a bit too hazy, I think that if you worked bigger you'd have more room to sharpen the edges. Either that or really sharpen your pencils and put on a good layer.

>>3202591
What a lovely composition. I think it would look nice in some light watercolors with maybe some rich dark browns in the shadows. Its definiltey coloring-book ish and when I look at it I'd love to color it.

>>3203482
I think this anon has the right idea. Take a look at bat wings, see how the bones in them stick out a lot when there's a light behind them? They almost look like they're not wrapped in skin at all because there's so much contrast between the edge of the bone and the skin. I would hesitate on making the wings too bright though because you don't want it to distract from the face. In the thumbnail of this I think the shapes of light look too big, bright, or not the perfect shape. However, I do think it is an improvement because in the original pic the wings look too thick, making them heavy and as if she wouldn't be able to fly and they'd even be hard to carry around on her back.

>>3205009
Lol, I can see your fear through your painting. What an odd composition. It absolutely looks like you need to move the canvas over to show more of the building and far less of that huge empty negative space. Negative spaces like that can do wonders for our subconcious and can convey good emotions but I don't see it working for this painting. The shade of blue you picked is far too happy. Your building looks great though, 3D model-ish

>> No.3205050

You really could just cut off all that negative space and make this a very vertical composition. Its still a little boring but can be a nice compliment to your portfolio as it has nice rendering and lovely color.

If you went for the Dave Rapoza look, I'd say you're in the right direction, and even then it's still different and your style, which I'm really liking. You're just heavily lacking some proportion/anatomy (nose too low, head too big for the torso or torso too small for everything else). For this piece, I'm surprised you didn't notice those problems, since they're very apparent, especially the torso. Do you draw/paint zoomed in?

i just feel like you aren't really reaching a style yet. the pieces are all so heavily conceptual, but the actual painting lacks any kind of individuality. It's a hard thing to try to set yourself apart by ideas alone.

I just don't think it's enough to know how to paint everything, I think you need to find a way to stylize everything too. That might just come with time, but I feel you've plateaued and are simply continuing to work without making meaningful progress towards a unique identity. Nothing really changes from painting to painting except subject matter.

>> No.3205629

>>3205617
Hmmm can you post an example of someone you think has style? I'm not 100% sure what you mean

>> No.3205635

>>3205629
i mean pick a post-impressionist and look at their early work compared to their mature work. everyone settles on a way they like to draw everything. van gogh painted fabric different than cezanne than picasso than matisse. It's just you seem to be caught in a rut of simply painting things how they are. Sure you rearrange the materials and the figures, and present a variety of different textures every time, but they're still all safely recognizable as what they are. When you paint metal, we know it's metal, but not in a good way. It just looks like metal. It doesn't look like YOUR metal, just looks like metal.

And that... I know it sounds like a copout to have a particular way you enjoy painting, but you will find it immensely multiplicatively harder as you continue to paint to simply paint things how they are. Everyone on /ic/ wants to be "The guy that can paint anything"

I always see "What Are Your Goals" threads and people say "I want to paint everything that comes into my head no matter what it is". You are already able to do that, but you need to take it a step beyond that or you risk diminishing returns in your studies.

Once you know the rules it's time to break them. You can paint fabric? Cool. Paint it the way you like to paint it then. Once you know the rules behind how light hits fabric, there's literally no reason to continue to paint it the same way every time. You could change the thickness or texture of the fabric, but odds are if you can already think of a different kind of fabric to draw next time, you already know how to paint it.

Art shouldn't just be about executing what you already know, no matter how vast what you already know is. You need to learn a new trick.
