The sun light in this particular scene was blocked by three different species of trees and two bushes with the total leaf count of 802 214 individual leaves. The artist painstakingly created a floor plan mapping out the location of every single leaf and branch and simply plotted the points of each individual ray to get a accurate position of the sun spots.

Artist loosely copied shapes from references, if not used some brush, and placed light wherever it would attract attention where he wants to.

I like the piece and I am lightyears far ftom that level but isnt there something terribly fucked about owls claws and they way they land on characters arm? It looks like it is just floating instead of resting on the limb. Correct me if Im wrong.

The patches of bright sunlight is done by deciding what areas the sun would hit if it was completely out in the open, not blocked by trees and shit
Then simply add in more shadow shapes in those areas, making it seem like there's something blocking the sunlight.
