So, from the reading, its actually a bit more complex than that- see, while tracing can smooth out a lot of the complexities in placement and scaling, the method tends to take away from the actual figure drawing. The mangaka had a dedicated assistant during his time on Gantz who would model the weapons needed, and would deliver screenshots to the mangaka that matched his desired angles. This was later used for vehicles and they would use boxes to create settings with particular scale.

It just looks wrong if you know about firearms. Without going into detail, it looks like it'll just jam if you use it. When you fire a bullet, the bullet leaves, not the casing. So when a new round is loaded from the magazine into the revolver cylinder, it won't enter because the casing remains inside. It has to have an ejection port like automatic pistols like the m1911.

I'll try to suspend my disbelief for a charging handle and hammer combo buuuuut it looks like it won't work.

They're mangaka- they have to make all of these drawings within a limited time frame, usually for peanuts. The QC should be handled by an editor, but if the mangaka and the editor just fucking hate each other, neither will put in the effort to push out a better manga.
