Idk depends on how it's executed. Photo or in person. If in person there are better artists, black artists included, who could do a portrait in person that would come out better. A lot of Kehinde's work is really gaudy, I hope he just does a regular portrait of obama without all the fanfare, but then again why hire the guy if that's what you wanted.

Also if you guys weren't aware, Sargent and Zorn both did presidential portraits. This guy is a far cry from that, but a step above the really staid boring portraits done for the past couple presidents. I just hope it's not too eccentric. We don't need Obama riding a horse draped in red fabric wearing a durag and an OBAMA chain, which is basically what Kehinde does.

i guess... honestly i would've rather seen Kerry James Marshall do the portrait. There's shock value in Kehinde but I bet the portrait won't be like the ones he normally does. I bet he cracks under pressure and all that affectation goes out the window. Inb4 a boring presidential portrait.

Kehinde does normal portraits. He will only paint Obama with ice if Obama wears ice to his sitting. He might paint a brocade pattern over him, but nobody will be offended by that unless they identify as a silkworm.

>> No.3176309

>>3176307
honestly though I think kehinde is actually kind of bad at painting black people. They look exactly that: painted. Must be the way he lights his subjects but their skin tone always looks like a layer on top of their actual skin, rather than their actual skin.

He paints black skin like it's translucent, when if you REALLY want to capture it you need to make it as opaque as possible.

The transitions in that painting between the light and midtones make the skin look transparent in a way that is really jarring and decidedly unblack. Doesn't probably help he chose yellow/red light instead of blue, white or natural light which is undeniably the most flattering to black skin. Warm light sources always make black people look weird.

Shut the fuck up you beta trannie LOSER. "perfectly capturing a likeness" does not involve painting like you are printing a photograph. To perfectly capture his likeness a good artist would spend a great deal of time with him getting to know him abstractly then he would imprint the canvas with all his layers of understanding about the human. That would possibly achieve a perfect likeness but you can see why there is no one correct answer.
Saying this guy is gonna do a boring lifeless portrait is more correct than whatever retarded first year philosophy youve drummed up for yourself. Anyways

I saw a bunch of Kehinde Wiley's work at the OKC Museum of Art awhile ago, and didn't find it too interesting. The paint handling is pretty boring, they're made up of very thin layers and are very obviously painted from photographs, as the images themselves are very flat.
I've seen his work at the national portrait gallery as well, and though they're initially really striking, I can't help but get bored pretty quickly.
I'd heard that his work was better before he had studio assistants do all his painting for him, but I haven't seen that work in person.

>> No.3178690

>>3176383
The idea with a lot of his work is to put black figures in classical contexts esp. from art history, to elevate them since they were not empowered subjects for most of art history. The problem with and ultimate failure of this is that he is incapable of mimicking the style of the classical masters. He is like an art student who thinks "if I can paint something real like a photo, I'll be like the masters", but the artists of the renaissance, baroque, Dutch golden age, etc did not attempt photorealism, they had very different goals and methods. So it comes off a cheap imitation.

But he doesn't paint photorealistic or even in a naturalist style. His subjects practically glow. He's not so much failing to imitate the style as using his own style to present black people in the same light as the original subjects. Those older techniques don't work so well with darker skin anyway.

And it's not so much a matter of elevation as it is recontextualization, so that viewers approach the subject from a different angle than they otherwise would. As much as I hate Kara Walker, he's basically doing the same thing as her, contrasting our expectations of a style with our expectations of a subject and forcing us to reconsider both.

(But /ic/ doesn't need to go to art school lol)

I like the aesthetic of Wiley's art, but he really needs to widen the range of color he uses to depict flesh and clothing. He could be using reds, blues, greens, oranges, etc. to really make the hues in skin pop against his floral backgrounds, instead he just uses... Brown on top of brown. It's really bland. Obama should have hired Harmonia Rosales or Njideka Akunyili Crosby. I suppose Wiley's piece will really pop and be extravagant though.
