haha dont worry. not giving up on you guys yet. have been on /ic for the last 5 years on and off. and this kinda behaviour is expected. Its kinda nice though, ppl will simply speak their mind. also makes for some intresting critiques! Yeah zbrush is a really good tool to learn, very versatile! id get the alex figini tutorial from learnedsquared. it has alott of info, very helpfull. for me i tend to use maya for hardsurfuce modelling and zbrush for organic. maya seems more simple to me, better to set up composition/perspective and stuff. zbrush has so many tools i find it hard to know when and where to use them. yet when mastered i dont think there is any program that can rival z-brush in the versatility department, maybe 3d coat.

>>3171839
thanks ill prolly do that. have to be carefull with the contrast tho
>>3171835
Nowadays i try to do page layouts, since at most studios they print out your stuff and put it on a wall so the whole team can look at it. the layout adds a little tiny bit imo, which might make the diffrence.also could print the bunch of layouts as a book to send to potential clients. Here's the mock up layout

anon, a lot of people can actually color from greyscale, but i personally find it really difficult. my advice is, start with color blocking first and then make a layer over your color layer, fill it black and set it to "saturation" it will show you a greyscale version of the colors youre using. so if you regularly check that layer, you should see the values of the colors

don't do shitty drawings to be done sooner, try to get in the mindset of just doing drawings everyday, and loosly follow the prompts for the assignments. You should be working at a pace double what they are expecting of you anyways. I've got to do 20 paintings this month, but I want 20 good paintings, so I'm probably going to do 30 or 40 paintings. And when I'm not painting I'll be drawing. This is a job, treat it like one.

So, today I took the time to make a bunch of rendering tests. While doing this, I wasn't concerned with anything else other than to get some brush work that felt nice, and I think I did in the end, but I have a question:

How do artists make those super smooth transitions between colors, as in the picture on the bottom left? I've been trying for a while to get something along those lines, but I simply can't.

Are they just really good at blending things out, or is it just a case of using a big airbrush and masking and painting and masking and painting and masking...?

Nope, block in more. Your values in the midtones and shadows are pretty light, I'd go in and fix that before rendering. Also, before rendering you should clean up your shadow shapes more. Oh, and please clean up your outer edges for every form (and fill in your background COMPLETELY. I see white spots in the top and bottom corners as well as showing through near the neck, hair, shoulder, among other places!!). You have no idea how many times you can fool someone into thinking a block-in sketch looks professional just because you cleaned up your shit man lol. It looks like you started rendering the face early, stop that. Make sure everything progresses at the same pace or you will get stuck rendering something to hell and making it look out-of-whack compared to everything else.

Good luck. You're on the right track but work more confidently and cleanly.

lol you must have a very limited understanding of color if you cant understand how i experimented with color in this painting and cant give any advice that builds on what ive done and the style i pursued, instead saying i should abandon this style altogether and start over with greyscale?

the first rule of critique is that you should respect the choice of style or subject matter by the artist

to provide a good critique you need to build on what has already been attempted in the art rather than giving some "advice" that is completely unrelated to the style or subject.

There are no rules to critique, by the way. As an artist you have to put your shit out there, and then take away the useful information when people shit all over your work, and leave what you don't find useful. If you find nothing useful, then you're an art god or you're a close-minded defensive faggot. Either way, your skill is going to plateau until you figure out what you're doing wrong and how to fix it. Pretty difficult to do when you can't swallow your pride and take attacks on your artwork as attacks on yourself. Good luck with that, bud.

Pretty good start, anon. These look like they're still stuck in the beginning block-in stage, though. Your forms are solid, colors seem fine, however I think your shadows need to be a little more defined, especially on those purple things. I'm not even sure what those are supposed to be. It looks like you're trying to put in reflections a little bit early, so instead try blocking in and blending the colors and shadows underneath the reflections first, then put them in last. Also, you did well to follow the form of the apple on the right in the bottom picture, I'd like to see you do that with the other fruit as well. Your brushstrokes show the form of the object, so you're going to want to paint as if you're following the form of the object in real life (like painting on an actual apple or plum or whatever that thing is), if that makes sense.

Keep going though, I really want to see what you do with these studies. Try to take one, even if it's not these, all the way to completion (from bock-in to blending to rendering and details). It's good practice and shows you where you're fucking up in your process, so if you have bad construction and get confused in the rendering stage you know what to work on next time.

boy no wonder you gave such an ignorant response to my work cuz you are definitely ignorant. there are rules to critique - they are exactly the one i pointed out. you must respect the choice of style and subject the artist has chosen. You are so ignorant beyond belief.

It's like this. Lets say I made a concept art for a sci fi game. And your response is "concept art is not art. go learn impressionism or anime style." wtf???

that is exactly the type of response or advice you gave me.

i did figurative abstraction that involves experimentation with color. if you knew anything about color you would tell me whats working and whats not. but you tell me to do greyscale which means translating what you see into values with consistent structure. wtf???

wtf??? it has nothing to do with emotional and experimental aspects of color, how color is relative and depending on surrounding colors a particular color will look completely different from whats not there in the subject of reference and the expetimental colors will substitute just as well for the realistic style of colors and give rise to a recognizable figure without the use of realistic style and colors.

if you think crit is all about shitting up on other people's art, it just shows you are not even a real artist you just pretend to be one and give "critique" aka shitting on ppl's art. Not. A. Critique.

of course you are like this cuz you are ignorant as hell both on the rules of critique as well as something basic like color theory

The angle of the facial features don't match up with the angle of the skull. The head is not making contact with the arm/hand, it's sort of floating? Even if she is laying on her horn I imagine her forearm would still rest under her cheek for support. Ear should be showing on her left side, not on her right. Her neck is very long for the perspective you have her at. There's something off about her breasts but I can't quite place it. Her ribcage is bent strangely and out of proportion and perspective with her neck and collarbone. Same with her hips and giant thighs, they're also out of proportion and perspective.

Did you have any kind of photo reference for this?

Learn how to light faces properly. Also, lazy is no excuse. It's fine if you mirror things to get a general sense of what you're doing in the beginning, but perfectly mirrored faces are weird to look at. So even if you draw it mirrored, you can always grab something like an eye and shift it just slightly off from the others. You'd be disgusted by how asymmetrical some faces can be if you tried putting lines over them.

stop making stuff up. please tell me when i ever showed my insecurities? point to something i actually wrote.

you should be smart enough to know that just by looking at an artwork what that artist was going for with the subject and the style. it should be obvious to you. do you look at art and have someone tell you what that artist was going for? cant you figure it out on your own at least the basic intent of the artist who made it?

again its like i made concept art and asked for crit and you are like "concept art is not artn those colors are artificial, try academic traditional painting instead"

yeah they're plums. The loose, thicker style seems to work well on people and fruit that mimic skin, but painting peaches and plums today I noticed how hard it is to translate their textures into blocky brushstrokes.

I bet if I had some tutorial on how furry artists make skin look like matted fur that'd help with peaches.

The dusty bloom on plums and grapes always gives me trouble, but I think it's more a process thing than a fault of the way I'm painting. I was painting the waxy parts of the plum on top of already wet, darker paint, so it makes it look like the plums have a million highlights instead of bloom.

Thanks for the critique, I think the thing I need to work on is really seperating every color into a form, and not painting on top of wet paint. That's just a habit I need to get into. I like painting in one layer so that's what I'm practicing, but I need to truly do it in one layer, and not mostly one layer with paint sloppily laid on top of it for some parts. I need to really do just one layer.

I'll practice that tomorrow.

there's parts where you are trying to do complementary colors like the red on green foot.

and parts where you're trying to do analogous colors like the arm that transitions from green to yellow to red

and parts where you're trying to do neither where there are colors like teal and yellow next to each other, or orange next to green, which is about as unharmonious as you can get.

You seem to have no concrete theory behind the colors being used. Seems completely arbitrary.

If you could explain exactly what this color theory is, and why you feel so strongly about it, I'd love to know, because honestly it seems like you are just putting down random colors all over the place.

I put Red 1 and Yellow 1 adjacent to each other (rather than putting down an orange in place of Yellow 1) because orange partially contains red in it, and doing so wouldn't differentiate the colors enough and too much red anywhere is jarring to the eyes/disharmonious.

And in actuality, with additive color mixing, the opposite color of Red is Cyan, not Green. Putting red and green near each other (Red 1 & Green 1) suggested a bias towards yellow, so it makes sense that I put down Yellow 1 in between Red 1 and Green 1.

White 1 is surrounded by warm colors (Red 1, Yellow 1, Orange 1, Pink 2, and Yellow 2) so it naturally appears cool relative to these warm colors. (Going from warm colors to white is the same direction as going from warm colors to cool colors) White 1 also serves to desaturate the area which is abundant with mostly pure warm colors.

Pink 2 serves as a transition between red 1 and white 1.

Red being naturally dark color (relative to other colors) that pops out is a good way to demarcate a border or edge of figure.

Green 1 is adjacent to Orange 3 to demarcate border between the underside of her breast/rib and her belly/stomach. Alternative color, red, would be too abrupt of transition to green and also too dark, and yellow would be too bright and too smooth/indiscernible of a transition from Green 1.

Transition from Red 4 to Orange 3 suggests there is a highlight in Orange 3 because orange is naturally brighter color than red.

Teal 1 (by teal I mean bright sky blue with green shade) makes transition through Turquoise 2 to Yellow 5 in the style of adjacent colors blue green yellow, getting brighter each step.

It turns darker as it nears Black 2 (actually a very dark blue pigment). That transition between Black 2 and Yellow 5 is Orange 5.

Red 5 transitions into Yellow 4 via Orange 4.

The whites (White 1, 2, 3, and 4) and darks (Black 1, 2 and Blue 1, 2, 3) were placed rhythmically alternating between left and right of the figure.

In further detail, Blue is the inversion of Red and Green; Green is the inversion of Red and Blue; and Red is the inversion of Green and Blue combined:
B = -(R + G) = -Y
G = -(R + B) = -M
R = -(G + B) = -C
This can be further proved in the following:
R + G = Y
R + B = M
M + Y = R
M + Y + B = M

Overall, I like the background. The clothes could use less color, no need to overcompicate them.

And the face. Please, don't use so much shading, it now looks creepy as fuck. I liked it in greyscale a lot more, so two colors (normal + shadow) would do much better.

Well basically:
-check your anatomy, It's not terrible but it's inconsistent in his shoulders even if it doesn't show
-What the hell is that cape, it makes no sense how it's holding on his head
-Boring design of his clothes: work on your silhouete even on the details (I was taught personally that from Alex Konstad)
-You draw the clothes like solid objects, give them some flow
-I don't know if you did, but the impossible cape is telling me that you didn't look for enought references. References will help you specially on where to put the details, like the belts, or the shoes strings
-I haven't painted this, but the colors are very dull, don't get scared to go saturated
-Learn to how to paint clothes
-There are more faults, but It's late here in Europe and I can't think straight anymore.

Good night
