I can maybe help you.
>-how to draw this dumb mouth at this dumb angle
You could cheat a little and draw the interior of the opposite cheek like pic related.
>-how to give kids expression without adding wrinkles and making them look old
It's hard, study kids faces and narrow it down to the essential lines :
Kid is angry ? Frowned eyebrow, eyes wide open, maybe mouth closed and crisped.
Kid is afraid ? High eyebrows, eyes wide open, mouth open.
Kid is being happy ? High eyebrows, eyes closed, smiling.
No need to put additional lines. I don't see why you would.
>-how to draw dumb messy hair without it looking retarded
I'm not good enough to do it myself but you have to study how the hair goes from the scalp and draw accordingly. Maybe this video can set you on the right direction? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7L9VJSr_PEI . Good luck with that.
>-why do i destroy half of all my sketches when i try to simplify it into black line art
Because black line art is hard as fuck because of line weight, silences etc and you need to practice it and experiment a lot to get it right

I couldn't tell what any of this was in the thumbnail and skipped right over it until I saw the other anon's comment. I'm not sure if thats really a problem or not because the lost edges and attypical lighting scenario is probably nicer than changing it. I guess I'd just keep that in mind for your portfolio site, maybe make that one larger so people can see in.
I'd say move on to the next one

i gave you a crit before and you showed me your reference and i was too lazy to explain my feelings on it. you need to try to incorporate that blue/green in the fur into your work. it's in there a little bit already, but you should really try to push it.

Try to work analogously from a yellow-orange down to the blue-green, but that means you probably have to get rid of the reddish-orange colors in the piece.

Or you could push the red-orange and incorporate the blue-green for complimentary color scheme, but right now it's a bit too greyed out, and the vibrant colors of the reference aren't coming through.

>Try to work analogously from a yellow-orange down to the blue-green, but that means you probably have to get rid of the reddish-orange colors in the piece.
the only reason i say minimally use reddish orange is you risk having too wide a palette if you use a really vibrant blue-green and it's hard to transition between those two colors harmoniously. You could risk ending up with a rainbow and all of a sudden you'll have a deviantart donut steal oc on your hands.

Try thinking of this painting as a reference if you go with analogous colors.

yeah just give it a shot, it's good as it is if a bit muted, but i think some really powerful chromatic moments outside of the bright highlights could liven up the piece.

Yeah i dont really care. ill use whatever to speed up my process or get to a better result.
I'm also using tons of photos and heres the 3d render. I dont think there is any rules in art. and i'm of the opinion that its better to steal something good then come up with something shitty. Get influenced by the right things and take away from it that which makes an impact on you. thats the right way to go imo. id be stupid to reinvent the wheel.

i wouldn't sweat it. Can always do a new one. The base of it is really nice though, it honestly doesn't take much to push the colors to where they need to be. I'd say continue experimenting once you get the foundation down. It's the last few bits of edits that really bring a painting together. It's like you see in those tutorials it looks like nothing for 99% of the drawing and then at the end it all comes together. You just gotta learn to bring it all together. But that last 1% is the hardest thing to practice because you only get to do it after the other 99% of the work.

Also I couldn't help myself and did more to it. Was fun.

>> No.3171324

just remember, in general analogous and complementary are the two main color theories. So either work from one color to another yellow>orange>red style for more soothing paintings, or put complementary colors next to each other if you want to be dramatic like orange>blue

Your lights and darks are too similar in value so everything looks washed out and it fucks up how we read the colors. For instance instead of the table looking like it is reflecting warm light, it just looks like it's a gross piss colored table. Same with the rack thing on the right and the curtains.

Get your values right, then start on local colors then tackle warm/cool relations in and out of the light

I'd say the left eye needs to be shaped closer to a (| shape than () and both should be slightly smaller in general. Asian faces tend to look flatter on 3/4 view but I wouldn't excuse that on your drawing, maybe you felt the need to compensate that and subconsciously felt to turn a bit the face to have more shape. Try to keep proportions tight and loyal to ref as it doesn't quite match both in angle and size.

It's good practice though.
