i was my painting professor's favorite student. my painting was hung in memorial hall.

thats a wishy washy gross over generalization of art schools. you really think art programs in community colleges and liberal arts colleges are same as top notch art schools? have you ever heard a risd professor give you a critique?

you are ignorant in stunning ways borderlining hubris and arrogance.

and not only the faculty but the students there are so amazing too

i am lifelong friends with several classmates from risd.

especially the architecture and interior architecture students they are driven to endless work like medical students. they literally get no sleep... ever.

if you ever walked and slept in those buildings with such amazing peers and teachers you would not dare utter such utterly stupid nonsense

art teachers are mediocre artists? they may not make millions of dollars scamming rich people with ludicrous conceptual ideas taken to the extreme but they know what they are doing. they know their area of expertise. they are all practicing artists.

sometimes being "best" or most successful doesnt mean you are the best teacher. teaching is entirely different endeavor altogether. i know because i also taught before in a studio. its really hard to translate your instincts and experience into concrete words and instruction.

professors at risd? they may not make millions of dollars but they can make you cry with tears with purely concise and overwhelming words if they wanted to in their critiques, either out of happiness or disappointment. their instruction is so complete and enlightening they inspire you and make you move in decisiveness and spirit of fearless experimentation.

you are a big fish in a small pond.

i tasted the waters of the far and wide ocean. i was one of the best.

my professor introduced to me works of frank auerbach and uniquely encouraged me to pursue a similar style. he made me what i am today.

you keep saying that but see the result of such arrogant and pessimistic thought of disrespecting learning and educational institutions. the only word you can mutter is 'loomis' 'loomis' almost like a chant in pure land buddhism. it should be called loomism.

in the meanwhile i am at school learning the concepts and vocabulary and the academic language to translate my ideas into concrete works and give and receive critiques. i gain from the limitless knowledge of the professors and peers. the positive feedback between the work and the discourse gets you a path of learning that is exponential.

you keep chantinh loomis loomis. i will speak clearly about the intent and the aesthetics, the visual language colors and meaning.

idk i was at art school for a year and all the teachers basically said "you'll be fine" and never gave me any mind blowing eye opening critique. They all gave me the impression that it was a matter of time for me, so I left.

Being a good student doesn't make you a good artist, being a good artist makes you a good artist.

I was surrounded by people at SVA that treated me like a freak because I actually put effort into painting. I'd be in the dorms working on new paintings and they'd be out doing drugs, drinking, and partying.

I'd ask students "What did you paint over the summer" and they'd say "Nothing", as if being in an expensive art school for 4 years was all the art experience they'd need, and when they graduate they'll just be "artists". I'll get a degree and then I'll officially be an "artist".

Pretty retarded. All the teachers didn't go to art school, and they found the whole thing ridiculous, so idk what it's like at RISD, but my experience of art school is that it's a scam that the teachers are in on, and actively remind the students of. If you don't take that initiative and leave that's up to you, but when the people giving instruction are actively telling you how stupid you are for being there you'd think you'd take a fucking hint.

when did you go to SVA? may I ask?

I am at SVA now. I don't get that impression at all.

I will agree that SVA is not overwhelming, competitive and intense like RISD but it's still a good school in my opinion.

Yes, I talked to another student who transferred from SCAD who said that at SVA people are not focused on painting , so he was disappointed. They do other things like interactive multimedia, sculpture, 3d printing. Even the paintings look very different from risd. They look very cartoony and have the looks of a political satire or pop art.

My friends are all very busy working on their art, in and out of class, posting their results on instagram and other social media platforms.

When did you go to SVA? When did you leave?

You couldn't even pay your mom money out of your own pocket to hang one of these creepy, soulless abominations of yours on her wall. The faculty at your school have psychologically manipulated you like they've done with your peers in order to deflect blame from themselves when you graduate and their fake emotional safety net is removed and you have to live in the real world with real people who aren't cultists. Okay cool. Best of luck to you.

I am interning at a major gallery in New York City.

Several of my art will be published in a student run magazine, Visual Opinion.

I also had shows in Brooklyn and published in a few printed magazines.

I sold some art too. I make about 600~ 2000 a year on art (fluctuates yearly). It's not enough to sustain me, but I am satisfied for now.

You are doing well Brian on a path that you chose.

But don't disrespect art schools and the students and teachers who are there.

RISD is the best art and design school in the world.

I think SVA will also become one of the best in the near future because it's located in Manhattan. Just like how NYU transformed from being a mediocre school to one of best schools due to its location. NYU law is one of best law schools in the country. Same thing will happen to SVA, Parsons, Cooper Union, FIT and Pratt.

Dude I'm your age. If you were so fantastically good you should've left art school and done it yourself. You've been in school for as long as I've been on this board. What gallery would ever put your work in it. I'm in galleries in Rhode Island, and none of them would ever even consider your work for a juried show or to put you on commission.

Blame it on whatever you want, but you haven't improved at all since I came here, and I'd argue you've gotten worse. If you are putting all your hopes on NYC for some reason responding to your paintings more enthusiastically than Providence that's pretty weak. I have paintings in NYC right now, and none of them are selling, and you think somehow your work is gonna be hopping off the shelves?

ok first of all who gives a flying fuck about a student run magazine, and second you are a fucking intern. You should already have paintings in galleries. You need a resume of shows you've won and galleries you're in, not places you've fucking interned. Unless you want to become a gallery manager and not a painter (There's a gallery I visited in CT that the owner would hang his work on the wall and it was terrible).

You clearly already are considering a career in managing artists instead of being an artist cause you made that stupid website where you literally TAKE COMMISSION ON OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK! I showed that to my mom and she couldn't believe how slimy and creepy that is. Like... fuck dude... just get good at art it's not that fucking hard.

Thanks for telling me to enjoy the debt, which I don't have.

Why are you so full of ill will? It's like you are jealous of everybody and treat everybody like a competition.

I am just saying don't disrespect the education you get in art schools, especially the best ones.

The result of such thinking is very clear here.
"Loomis loomis looooomissss"
That's only thing muttered here. I guess I will try to save you guys in 5 year's time when I get my MFA.

>>3169355
No I wasn't in school. I took break from school and painted on my own, just like you did.

And then I went back to school.

The point is not to sell them a bunch like hot cakes. If you sell 2~3 paintings a show that's a modest success.

Of course none of them are selling. Your paintings are like a mix of impressionism with a slight flavor of cubism. It's already done before.

Your claim is completely unfounded. I've shown in Brooklyn a few times and a university gallery in Pennsylvania.

Maybe you don't understand my work.

It's very strange to see an artist like yourself who's been painting for so long to not get my art.

I want you to succeed. Go for it. I am perfectly happy with what I am doing now.

>>3169359
You don't understand how amazing it is to be an intern at a gallery in new york city. I get to promote my art to people who come to exhibition opening party. It's all about connection and chances. If you don't have that, it's impossible to get into a major gallery in NYC.

You don't know how much my friends envy me for getting the internship. It's a major gallery.

I am already good at art, and always striving to be better. Always improving. Always experimenting.

You guys live in a fantasy world where my art sucks. Believe what you want, but your opinion is a small minority compared to those that actually matter, such as opinions of my professors, peers, and friends.

I did this one entirely from a mirror, you gotta just soldier through that shit. Hold the skull, observe, put the skull down, do a line, repeat. Takes forever but would've been much easier because you were doing grisaille.

Not sure if time constraints would've made that unrealistic but you probably could've finished the drawing after an afternoon of doing that

you guys are ideologically biased.

There is no need for prophecy or stomping down my art. Let my art be seen for what it is. There is no need for an ideologically distorted opinion. That doesn't mean anything.

If I will fail as you say in 5 year's time when I get my MFA, let it be that I fail. If I will succeed, I will succeed.

Your opinions and prophecy don't change or influence the outcome at all.

It's people trying to control reality through language. Trying to impose their version of events and opinions onto the world and other people.

It's an exercise of power through verbal constructs and discourse often ideologically distorted into pure fantasy and hateful views.

My only qualm with you was that you keep disrespecting the education we get in art schools and you keep prophesying that i will fail.

it's an attempt at control of reality by rubbing your opinions onto it.

you treat me like a competitor. NOT a peer.

You talk as if it's a good thing if i fail.

We are not friends. We are not peers. Why? Cuz of your own belligerent mindset.

In my circles, we have none of this nonsense.

If one of us will fail, it would be unfortunate. None of us want it. We are all very talented. We don't predict who will fail and who will succeed. We don't say someone is the best, and his or her way is the best way so anyone who doesn't follow the same path will fail.

Look at artists who succeeded. They all took their unique paths toward success.

Every path has a pro and con.

Let each person pursue his own path the way s/he desires without any opinion having to criticize and condemn it with a prophecy of failure.

Some will fail. Some will succeed. Without any of your ugly opinions mattering a single cent.

You are no god. You can't predict the future. You don't know me. And you obviously don't understand my art.

It really depends on the school and the specific student/teachers you meet. You can succeed anywhere and fail anywhere, but your environment does help or hinder. I'd say RISD and Art Center, and the smaller ateliers (where the smart students who actually research will go) are worth it. Places like SVA and Calarts is okay, it's not "good" though, and definitely not worth 25k/year or whatever you pay these days. Btw does Tristan Elwell still teach at SVA? He was nice and definitely someone who will help you help yourself.

but I am not mad or jealous. It's NOT my art.

It's YOUR art. You keep doing what you must.

I will keep doing what I shall.

Here's a piece of critique-

You should try using some ultramarine blue or cobalt blue (+ white) in the shadows and some orange in the highlights.

You know how to paint realistically, with blue colors overwhelming all the yellows/oranges turning greenish as a result, but you don't know how to play with colors in an aggressive and experimental style.

experimental art is the greatest form of art that can be achieved by us humans. It's uplifting, inspiring, liberating, and enlightening. It requires the very best in us and is always new and changing. Its possibilities are endless and unique per individual artists in their styles, unlike realism which tends to look similar after a while.

Yes I learned realism. I am not the best at it, but I can pull it off if I really try.

i know you don't necessarily like this painting so it's weird to crit it, but either work on a larger canvas, or work more loose. When the face is that small on the canvas, it can be really constraining to try to get a likeness, and ends up looking silly when there's all these tiny brushstrokes on the face and big brushstrokes on the rest of it.

It's fine to just get a loose likeness if the proportions on the canvas are too small to get exactness.

Especially for a figure painting. Figure paintings aren't so much about the actual face as a portrait, it's fine to focus on the bigger picture of the figure even if you don't get to "show off" as much as you would in a portrait.

>> No.3170480

>>3170475

and >>3169211
but in reverse. You are doing a portrait, so the composition and gestural portions of the figure are more constrained. You should be using portraits as a way to show off likeness and drawing skills. When theres a big face on the canvas you expect there to be some substance to it, not just a few loose brushstrokes.

tl;dr they aren't in art school so they denounce art school because they don't want something to matter that they don't have.

just as in ancient korea there was an enlightened king who recognized virtuous or gifted subjects and rewarded them with opportunities, i was awarded an opportunity to be with the best of the best. because risd is a meritocratic and enlightened institution.

there was a guy from china who drew like a printer. he told me that he wished he could draw like me. i told him i wished the same to be like him.

but he told me in china anyone can learn technique but

no one can draw like me.
