What are some good artist conventions? Not like comic con where there's just an alley of artists that sell merch, but a convention by artists for artists? THU seems to be the only good one but I don't know if I can spend the money to live out of the country alone for a while I attend. Is there anything that just has a collection of artists that talk about their work/process on a panel or something? Along the lines of GDC but more artwork based I guess.

I know schoolism has some workshop things too. Maybe that's what I should be looking for?

Both. Style is the set of both conscious and unconscious decisions made when approaching a piece. It's the culmination of your experiences up to that point. I kind of like to think about it as slowly bringing your thoughts from your unconscious to the conscious. With every new piece of work you make, building off the knowledge garnered from other artists that inspire you, you get closer to more tangibly defining your "style". That is, bringing what is most important to you or what you are most passionate about from your unconscious to the conscious.

Which is particularly why I think people change/evolve "styles" so often. That which inspires us isn't static and we as humans change over time. A particularly relevant quote from Richard Schmid's Alla Prima (Everything I know about Painting):
"Underlying all your choices, particularly subject matter and the way you represent it, should be your own personal scruples, the standards and rules that you voluntarily set for yourself, and which you may change or abandon whenever you choose-- without explanation to anyone. Your rules should arise out of your passions and your experience with what works for you. "

Hi guys, I have a question about paints.
What's the difference of acrylic and oil paints, I want to do "realistic" paintings, which I see are usually done in oil. When I look for classical acrylic painters no one comes up.
What's the difference (in technique, use. Not what it's made of)? Can I use acrylic for "realistic" portraits, plein air, etc? And can anyone give me a recommendation of an acrylic painter? I saw that Sinix paints with acrylic, but I can't find many more people. I would like to do a study of something done in acrylic.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

>>3161629
Acrylics are a fast drying, polymer based paint that dries slightly darker than what it looks like when wet. Versatile, cheap, and can last a long time on a palette if you use a sealed wet palette. Acrylics can be used thinly like watercolor to a very thick and textured application. Acrylics are great for making very graphic shapes, and for painting over itself (you can paint a silhouette of an object, then easily paint the light with graphic shapes). The only trouble with acrylics is their fast drying time, which makes it really hard to get a soft edge. If you're really quick you can make it work, but otherwise you'll have to resort to a slow-drying medium.

Oils are a slow drying, oil based paint that can be as easy or as complicated as you like. The thing with oils is that you can't use water to clean your brush or thin your paints like other water soluble paints, so I like to use Gamblin 100% Mineral Spirits (non toxic but extremely flammable), but Turpentine is also used often (even though it's toxic and smells bad). The idea with oils is to work in layers: Fat over Lean. This just means if you want to cover a color, you have to use a thicker amount of paint, and if you want to paint over that even thicker. Now the best way to think about oils is that they're always wet. Things can be constantly moved around and changed, sharpened and blurred, covered or wiped away with a cloth. Theoretically you could paint a whole portrait and if you still don't like it just wipe it away as long as it hasn't dried. Now with oils the complexity lies in the mediums that you use. You don't -have- to use any mediums, but they're usually recommended to get the full oil painting experience. I would start with Liquin as it makes your paint smooth as butter, but there's other mediums that make it fast drying, super thick and textured, glaze-like, etc.

If other people with more experience want to correct me, go ahead, but I think this covers most of the basics.

The best "realistic" painter with acrylic I can think of is Michael Whelan. A lot of book cover artists like him used acrylics in the 60's through the 90's, before digital, because it dried fast, and oils simply didn't let them keep their deadlines. Whelan of all of them truly mastered their use - and it's not easy, I tried.

You don't see any classical painters using them, because they didn't become commercially available until the 50's. A lot of the post-modern artists used acrylics, for their brighter colors. We don't know how acrylics will age, so high end gallery work tends to be done in oil, because we know how it ages.

Working with oils is better for realism, because the colors are more subtle, and the techniques available are more suitable for that kind of work. You can do glazes like with oils, but it's not the same. You can come back a day later and still work with oils, acrylics are dry within minutes. (It's a lot like fresco, which is painting on plaster, and once the plaster sets, you can't work it further, and plaster sets quickly). You also can't get the transparent qualities with acrylics that oils have. Acrylic's strengths are brighter colors, you can build up thicker paint and not worrying about it cracking when drying, and it's more opaque than oils. It's great for bright work with strong colors, like for advertising. Airbrushing it also makes it easier to blend.

I know this has been asked a lot but how can I keep from the opacity building up when multiple strokes overlap? I'm using Krita with the "wash" painting mode. I'm basically looking for it to behave as if everything was one stroke, so I can't darken part of a stroke just by going over it with another stroke, no matter how light.

In other words, I want it to behave like left all the time, things only darkening the harder I press down. Right is just awful. I've tried seeking google's help, I'm really not sure what to google though because nothing useful came up.

Not sure about krita, but in Clip Studio there are blending modes for individual brushes, one of which is called "replace alpha" that does exactly what you are asking for. It's likely that it's not implemented if it's not in the newest version (mine is 2.9.6, so it's older and can only speak for that version). You can check by hitting F5 to view brush settings.

Deviantart has been in the decline for years, largely because the heads realized it was better to work on the $$$ aspect of the site as apposed to functioning. I haven't used the site in a few years because I finally got fed up, but from my experience it's incredibly hard to break out as an up and coming artist there. The way the site functioned allowed only the popular artists to be placed in the limelight and rarely did a nobody get the same chance. When they implemented tags it also made things worse for a lot of people, you were stuck trying to figure out the 5(?) tags that would most likely to get you noticed and tough shit if it didn't work because unless you got 100+ favorites within 12 hours your stuff gets stuck in 'newest' purgatory which is basically how users realize DA is just an image dumping grounds. Outside of getting those chances at being featured in popular, those favorites mean nothing because favorites are never shared by the user.
Basically you have to be popular to get popular. At this point it functions better as a mirror and people know that. Why waste your time on a site that doesn't help you?

Tumblr, for example, is a bit different, you still have the problem with tags, but along with a popular section, people can reblog things which also gives the opportunity for people to spread your work around while still linking back to your main page, all easy exposure. That's at least one aspect that makes tumblr better than DA for being a better art-related social network.

Short version is that for an art-network DA fails to be a helpful art network

>Is this a viable alternative to other inking pens?
Yes. They bleed a bit more than other pens like Microns/ Multiliners but ink is ink. I switched back to them because while Microns are maybe a bit nicer they are no more durable an where out over time pretty badly.

Otherwise, all felt tip/ technical pens do the same thing, they put down a consistent and uniform black line. Get whatever is cheapest, everyone makes one (Prismacolor, Copic, Faber Castell, Sharpy, etc). The main advantage of Microns and the like is that you can get so many different sizes, for bold and very detailed lines as decided. Sharpy pens come in only one size, fine, which is close to an 03 for most other brands. If you want bolder you need an ultra fine Sharpy marker, note an ultra fine marker, not a pen. Those bleed like crazy but it is what it is.

Some advise though, don't by the packs of 1 or 2. The only economical way to buy them are boxes of 12 that cost ~$8, and ship free from Amazon I think.

An artist convention would be pretty interesting, but really that's just a more humble version of an art gallery.
If you're interested in just learning from artist guest speakers you can check out your local universities and see if they have events open seating available to the public.
Look for industry conferences in your area and see if they allow freelance visitors. I don't know where you are, but it seems that California has something that allows people to exhibit their work called the CAA. No idea if they have a permit that allows their exhibitors to make sales, though.
If you're looking for a place to sell, try to rent a space in a shopping center or a Black Lion, if those are still around, or even a local vendor event like a Christmas show or farmer's market.

Are you moving it with the selection or the move tool? If you're using a selection, it's imperfect due to the anti-aliasing. Without knowing what you're doing this is what I think may be happening as this is how I've seen some people use the program. I haven't ever run into this issue, myself.
The only other thing I can think of is if you're using the transform tool which when I tested it left similar artifacting even after just selecting transform and confirming the transformation.
If you're going to make selections, use the lasso tool with enough extra space because the edge doesn't have a hard transparency and it will take away some of the opacity of your pixels if the selection borders your art. If you're using the transform tool to move things, use the move tool instead. If you want to make pixel art bigger, don't use sai and use something that has an appropriate sizing algorithm like nearest neighbor.

First, no matter what instrument you’re using, make sure that you have it with the tip end down and that the tip is coming in contact with the paper/tablet. Ghosting is good, but if you never touch the paper, you won’t make any marks. When you’ve confirmed that you have tip contact, check the specifics for each instrument.

>pen

Make sure that the pen has ink in it. Replace empty disposable pens. Refill refillable pens. Dip again if using a dip pen.

>Pencil

Pencil leads are sometimes brittle. Look at the tip. Has it slipped out of the pencil? Sharpen it until you reach more lead. If you use mechanical pencils, make sure there are leads in the barrel and that the leads are being taken up through the tip.

>digital tablet

Check your tablet’s connections. Verify that it has power and that the computer is recognizing the tablet. If your stylus needs power, check its charge. Charge it or replace its batteries as necessary.

Eventually these checks will become second nature to you, and you will always be able to see drawings come out when you draw.

I think a lot of this guy's drawings are traced from other people's works but I can't find the originals. Every drawing is so different from each other... pic related, I don't think the left one is traced though.
What do you think? Can you find some artist you know among these drawings?

The further out the water goes, the more reflective it gets. So, if you stand in water on the beach and look directly downwards you'll see your feet. Follow the beach floor and you'll lose sight of it due to sky reflections.
Water, when constantly moving, stretches reflections tangent to the surface. Look up anisotropic reflections for more information. Wave structure is weird and I don't truly understand it, but just know for every peak there is a valley and then another peak. Representing this is weird too, and I don't have tips for that (Wish I did).
In drawing, it's more important to consider the reflective, refractive, and depth properties of water in order to make it convincing.
Hopefully that helps a little bit.

First thought is try and use more references of real people; look into "line of action" (it applies to neutral poses as well) as well as gesture drawing and body language. It sounds redundant, but artists who are drawing people who look stiff tend to try and draw from memory and then don't go further than the head is connected to the neck which is connected to the torso etc. which results in bland and stiff poses. Look out how the body contorts while expressing motions and personalities. For example, a confident and proud person will tend to stand straighter with their shoulders squared and head high, while a meek and shy person will curl into themselves and look down.
I don't know how your line-work and coloring skills are, but it wouldn't hurt to look into line drawing exercises and color theory.

I feel like I'm really creative when it comes to abstract things like character concepts, but for some reason I feel like I never know what I want to draw.

I get flashes of inspiration every few days when I come up with something 'Good', but in the meantime I just feel kinda bored in a sense. The kind of bored where nothing seems like a good idea, everything's too boring/difficult/similar to something I did last week

I doubt I can find a way of getting inspired more frequently since that's such a nebulous concept, but at the very least I'd like things to be a little easier in the meantime. The human body has a lot of different hues. Parts covered by cloth gets less tan. Mons pubis, the hip bone area and the chest is quite pale. The shoulders and lower arms gets a little extra tan. The inside of the lower arm is often pale however. The kneecaps and elbows have a little darker skin. The face also has a lot of hues, such as rosy cheeks, males might have grey or almost green jaws because of stubble. The best way to learn the hues of the human body is to make studies of course. Don't forget that animals, monsters and objects also have hues. If you paint everything with the same hue and saturation it will look boring. Some hues are due to ambient and reflected light. The shoulders and surfaces pointing up can get a blue hue because of the sky reflecting.

The gradients between the shadow and light is not just an in-between color of the shadow color and light color. If the shadow and light is just blended, it will look very lifeless. If you look at pictures you will see that the gradients is saturated. It's especially easy to notice if you remove that saturation.

Strong light can penetrate the surface of some materials and bounce around, then exit again. This will increase the saturation and make the surface look illuminated from the inside. In the case with human skin, we sometimes see it on hard edges between light and shadow.

I can't find a nice definitive resource for line drawing exercises (the one I had is MIA?) so pic related will have to do. In short, linework should be clean and essentially be able to hold itself on its own in regards to showing thickness, depth, and light source. It shouldn't be required to have color to be able to decipher and the coloring should work with the linework, not against. If the linework lacks weight than it will look bland, and if looks like it was hacked out with numerous lines it will look rough and unpleasant to look at.

As for color theory Blender guru has a video called "Understanding Color" that is a nice general explanation vid
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Qj1FK8n7WgY?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
If you don't have a strong color scheme your art can suffer, it can become bland and uninteresting and the lack of harmony can cause a piece to look gaudy or clunky. And just as bad, the "wrong" colors (and saturation/value) can cause someone to look dead and emotionless as somewhat explained in the video.

Anyone got pointers on what type of process someone would go through to render something similar to pic related? This doujin, along with a artists like Sakurai Energy and Itou Eight always make my favorite doujins in terms of art.

I'm mostly focused on trying to decipher the technical stuff, like what type of canvas size they were working at to make this, the type of brush, brush size, and the types of strokes they were making to get the lines they placed down; whether they were applying short, slow strokes or long broad strokes. This might sound like the most amauterist thing ever, but I've been looking at some videos and one stuck with me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbLECin_UPE

You don't need to see the whole 2 hours, just hop around the beggining.

The work flow this guy uses looks really simple and I've been trying to incorporate that to my own, but I've had some difficulty. See, he first sketches the whole thing, and from there, shapes it up, on the same layer. Thing is, maybe it's his brushes or whatnot, but I can't for the love of me reproduce it. Every brush I have, either my own or downloaded, looks super "smudgy" and blurry, so the draft ends up just as smudgy and blurry.
Anybody had this problem as well and overcame it? I've tried so many things already to no avail.

If that's an example of your attempt then there's more work that needs to be done than just changing brushes. The problem you're running into is that you're not considering the things he's thinking about when he begins refining his sketch. He already has an idea in his head of what things should look like in perspective, how to render volumes and important shapes to include to properly define the form. His lineart is a scaffolding to help him begin blocking in forms, the lines aren't just lines but are information that help him organize his thoughts regarding form/volume/shape and even lighting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZknWKTpc90

Take a look at this video and I would suggest to use more reference when trying to draw. When drawing from reference you have to make a conscious effort to draw what you *actually* see versus what you *think* you see. Your chains for example, there's a very large link for really no explicable reason when your everyday knowledge of links would tell you that every link is of the same size.

tl;dr it's not the brush, it's your technical skill

>> No.3169431

>>3169423
Additionally, if you're running into problems with smudgy brushes then try working on your pen pressure technique-- you may be using lower opacity strokes where a higher opacity stroke is more appropriate (uncertainty leads to light, unsure drawing). The China Digital Painting video is a bit misleading because the artist is already very skilled. You can't exactly supplant his workflow to your own because you don't quite have the same level of knowledge as him. The process video doesn't show enough about all the things he's considering at once. I don't want you to run into the trap of trying to copy his workflow/setup and expect to make similar art.

For example, you would not expect a new music producer to produce music on the same quality as a veteran music producer just because the new music producer had a bunch of money and bought the same exact setup as the veteran. It's a similar case here.

>> No.3169658

>>3169431

Ah I see. Thing is, while I understand that his skill level is much, much higher, I've tried to copy a reference 1:1 just to see if the method could be done, not worrying about construction and all that, and it comes off blurry still. When I try to increase the brush opacity, it doesn't looks "clean" as his does, but a mess. I've decided to instead of doing this, shaping things from a "chunky" brush, that I'll just do normal linework until I adquire more skill. Maybe then I'll understand better.
Have not checked your video though, will take a look. Thanks for the help friend.

Has to do with confidence really. You can try a few things, I also have this problem, though some might argue they're just crutch.

1) Drafting things first on a layer (if digital of course) and, when it looks like you have all the shapes, shoot the opacity down then create another one and trace over over it

2) Use SAI. For some reason the linework there is much more crispy then on photoshop. They also have a function that kinda slows down your lines as you draw then, giving you more control over it

3) Build up confidence and work with less, but more accurate strokes. Making them quicker helps too

Oranges and apples, honestly. FwaP will introduce you to construction drawings whereas KtD is about drawing what you see.
The first books of the Sticky give a basis on different subjects:
> DotrsotB is a good first book if you find the other 3 "hard", the most entry level if you can ignore her blabbering
> KtD, drawing from life (plenty of exercises to build your confidence), basically a better DotrsotB but takes way more time to complete
> FwaP, constructing complex things from simple shapes (also, an introduction to the other Loomis' books, which can be intimidating if you aren't used to his style)
> P made easy, perspective explained (by opposition to FwaP who throws a few pages about perspective in your face and expects you to get it).
Armed with the ability to draw simple shapes in perspective and to observe properly, the guy is now ready to tackle more difficult subjects. Skipping one of those is asking for troubles later.

For your normal everyday printer? No. There are methods for raised printing that use clear ink, or textured UV varnishes, but none of those will look natural or give you a proper appearance of brush strokes, just a raised glossy texture that you can feel. You would also have to design that layer yourself rather than it being something the printer does on its own.

i'd say you're on the right track with your "volume knob" visualization there. but imagine that in perspective, imagine it as an ellipse. you can use ellipses to rotate stuff in perspective.
i'm not necessarily doing it correctly in my image, just approximating.
i would suggest looking at scott robertson's how to draw, he has a section for rotating things in perspective which will give you an exact method to do it.
personally, i would say that you always try turning the angle in your head first.
then, after that, follow the exact angle-rotation procedure and compare your guess against your new results and see how close you were.
i think you'll get better and better at doing it intuitively the more you do this.

Check out Zin Lim on YouTube anon, from what I see the artist made use of Large colour planes. And a simple pallette. Though I recommended if you would like to paint like that first you'd have to know how to draw, ok but let's say you're to lazy for such. Well then I reccomend you first turn the image into a grayscale to make things much more simple. Now then make use of only 3 values/ colours in your pallete your darks the blacks, your midtones the whites, then your highlights the whites. (Remember to have the image primted in black and white and directly parrel to your painting surface). After this blur your eyes and till you see the picture as closest to the 3 maim values. Now then first apply all the darks first as best as you can (basically like a stencil) until it looks similar to your blurred vision image. Then do this with your other colours as well with the blurred vision until they look similar. Then refine on your detsils

Style will come naturally the same way you're handwriting naturally developed after learning to write. The only difference is here instead of learning to write, you need to learn the fundamentals, and you know where the fundamentals come from reading our heavily Memed Loomis, I found the book successful drawing especially helpful as well as the Bargue Drawing Course. Also as a guide to the Bargue drawing course there's this video on YouTube that guides you on how to do a Bargue drawing.

Tell me /ic/ what are the absolute essentials for painting in acrylics? I'm starting from nothing so I have to buy the canvases, brushes, and paint. What colors, what brushes, what canvases. I've mainly worked in digital but I want to make the leap into trad, I've always wanted to work in trad.

Because I'm a poorfag, I only have a budget of 100 USD for this month, but I will keep on buying things every month if I need to. So what do I prioritize first?

You're old enough to know not everyone can do certain things anon. You're past the age of believing you can "do whatever you want". If your lifestyle can't accomodate drawing, a skill that takes time, dedication and hardwork, then you won't be able to do it. Of course, by "do it" I mean the same as what people here call "making it". Working with art, being sucessfull with it and such. You can still problably draw OK studying a few hours a week. You're problably there already if you've been at it all these years as you mention it. Anything above that... well, most likely just won't happen.

Id focus on paint, you can get some good quality stuff on amazon. Liquitex or something. I went with a pack of winsor and newton for about 60 bucks but theres cheaper. For canvases i just had a big wood board cut into pieces for like 26 bucks, that gave me a lot of painting surfaces. You have to gesso them though, theres tutorials. The brushes are for me the least important, i get them from the dollar store and they can be pretty good quality

Great video. This is what you learn in color theory, as well, working from primaries outwards to tertiaries, and beyond. We learned this in advanced watercolor, too - we started with the primaries, no white, no black. One of the first things the teacher taught us was to mix black - equal mixtures of red, yellow and blue will make black. (with the right kinds of red nd blue, we used cad medium for both) Then, we studied black color in real life - it's very rare to have pure black anywhere in nature - most are hues of black, they favor one of the primaries - like a black thats got a lot of yellow, or red, or blue. Once you learn it, you can put on a black tshirt, and black jeans, and figure out why they don't quite go together - the t-shirt is yellowish black, the jeans are blueish black. Then we learned how to mix most colors, and how to make most colors, and only buy new colors for special colors that are harder to mix, or impossible, like ultramarine. A plein air kit really only needs the primaries.

Is there any good tutorial about multiple vanishing points?
Whjat are some rules? Like I suppose you can put the vanishing points of different objects wherever you want as long as they're on the horizon line ? But what about the spacing of the points? Like say we have objet 1 and 2. 1 got vanishing points A and B and 2 got C and D. Should the distance between A and B be equal to the distance between C and D?

I'm 37 and I started working seriously this year. I still suck big time but I'm super happy I forced myself through depression and age.
I suppose it depends on what you wanna do with art. But if you got time to work and analyze your work instead of drawing mindlessly, I'm pretty sure you can do something even at an old age.
4 hours a day sounds hard for people like us to get the time back. We learn slower now usually so we probaly need to work more than younger artists.
The "luck" I have is that my work is nights only and I'm alone at work so I can draw and use all my time for this. Maybe find a job where you can do that? Or at least cut all distractions. I stopped playing vg it helped big time.

Well, sorry buddy I know it's hard. In your case I don't see any solutions other than :
1) trying to use all your spare time/cut out on sleep (depends on the persons, I'm total shit with less than 8 hours but some peopleI know can have shorter nights regularly without being affected too much) and draw really mindfully
2) changing job/working part time
3) Drawing as a hobby
4) Giving up (maybe you actually can and have fun with other stuff. I can't, tried many times and I always end up coming back to drawing otherwise I feel like my life has no purpose)

>practice your fundamentals and construction so you can be as good as Proko in drawing from imagination
This is what irks me. Reading Loomis and watching Proko didn't improve my drawing ability meaningfully. Even after knowing that a head is a ball plus a lower jaw, I was unable to draw heads from below and above from imagination until I looked at reference and memorised.

I'm unironically starting to think construction is a meme.

Does anyone know how to make the Rocker Ring on the Cintiq 13HD zoom in and out smoothly on SAI or CSP?

Atm, I can't just hold it down to zoom in and out precisely; I have to press it each time, which zooms in and out a set distance.

I'm pretty sure it's possible because that's how it worked the first time I used it, but I think I screwed up the settings.

This is one thing Photoshop has, that's a useful tool - 3D shapes. You can create primatives in the app, paint them, light them, and when you're done, render the layer as art, and then integrate it into your work. I've used it a LOT.

When drawing with my elbow/shoulder, is it okay to rest my arm on the table for support? I'm a weakling, so holding my arm up for too long hurts.

Also, I don't have any blocks to draw, should I just draw cups and whatever I can find? I'm worried the stuff printed on cups and things I have will distract me from really seeing the shape. Should I just try and ignore it or cover them with paper?

why does everyone on /ic/ hate /ic/?
i see so many posts like "this is why ic sucks" or "everyone on this board is shit because of xyz", do something about it then!
if some people put 1/5th of the energy they put into shit posting, degrading other peoples work, and arguing about which artists suck, into making the board better, it could go a long way.
what are some ways we could improve the board?
here are some ideas i had
> more exercise threads
post a specific exercise or study and people post their replies, encourages people to get drawing instead of all the off topic conversation going on
>critique for every image you post
"it looks like shit" is not a critique. if you can't explain in art terms why its not good, maybe you shouldn't be critiquing it.
> non begs, occasionally visit beg and offer critique
one of the biggest complaints i see inside beg is that only beg artists are providing critique, so there is not much growth
