IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

you made her bone structure hard and sharp like a males face.

she may have very prominent cheekbones but trust me they're not sharp like that.
also that neck is too thick and the ear is too high

but the most important thing, you're working with the wrong perspective which is setting yourself up for failure in the long run because then you won't be able to visually see whats wrong with it if you were to just simply compare it with the image.

What he's saying has less to do with those muscles specifically, and more to do with a train of thought he uses to generally understand anatomy. Asymmetry is very common in muscles, so he uses this idea to to illustrate how these muscles connect and interlock with each other. In this example, he draws an arrow through the groups of muscles of the scapula, and this "gesture" sort of interlocks asymmetrically with the gesture of the arm. In this case, it's a little contrived imo, but it's a useful idea to keep in mind and he even encourages you to come up with your own way of understanding it.

Don't listen to >>3164917 . You can watch the video as an insight to the way people learn things but it's a pretty terrible way of going about things (as is evident as this namefag's work since he wanna namefag). There is a reason Syrca is memed on lmao.

The problem with that "method" is that you'd be stuck to focusing on a single aspect (and even worse, view) of what you're drawing and that if you want to change things up, you'd have to start all the way over.

This video should clear up any misunderstandings you have with my post. It should start to click in your head at around the 3:30 mark:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDNhFLcsgh8

tl;dw the process of UNDERSTANDING a subject will help you out so much more in the long run and in general since you're asking more in-depth questions about what you're drawing and will be internalized better.

If you're a beginner, just fuck off and read keys to drawing and work on your observational skills for now because that's all you need to work on. Of course do fun stuff on the side but fundamentals are what gets you better, not fluff. Or you can do Syrca's method and wonder why you haven't improved after a year.

Once you figure out how to draw that head then try some construction but seriously, I wouldn't even do any construction at all, I'd just keep drawing actual heads since as you can see here, there are a shitton of 3D rotateable heads in existence and learning how to construct heads from scratch is likely to be worthless skill compared to figuring out how to construct bodies from scratch.

Currently there is no o.bj ripper script for ripping non downloadable shit (all the userscripts on github are fucked I double checked since about a month or two ago)

But for downloadable sketchfab items you can open it in blender and control the orientation/rotation very precisely. Press 5 to toggle it to perspective and shift+z to preview a render
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/Navigation_in_3D

3D models exist of fucking everything, from /co/shit like Rick and Morty to 3D game model rips from Pokemon. The shit that you MUST learn construction for is hands and bodies because this shit is fucking difficult to model Designdoll, CSP and Daz3D but making a v. accurate model can take a very long time).

If you are still symbol drawing, rotate your paper as you rotate the image to spot mistakes. Digital artists can assign shortcut keys in SAI and photoshop for rotation and can additionally get these pressed using wacom express keys. Just a warning, if you want to be the Ruan Jia or some shit, you'll need references anyway because construction won't give you flawless lighting even if you are a god.

Kind of. But portraits would be more challenging and teach you more. The lips are all very flat. Try to break the planes like you did on some of the noses. Also avoid outlining and keep the black lines for the darker areas like inside the nostrills and between the lips.

I know this is probably one of those questions thats asked 10 million times every day but something I find an issue with is knowing when I should be moving forward?

Like when I started with fun with a pencil and he was drawing faces I had a massive issue because I understood what he was trying to put across about thinking in 3d but I still couldn't just draw a nose out of nowhere. Left me sitting for a while thinking do I just...stay here on the first set of exercises and keep going till my faces look as good as his? Is it good enough to understand the concepts and then move on and keep practicing as I go? etc.

I got past that (thank god because it's literally the baby mode starting point) but i'm just curious how other people determine whether they've done good enough to turn the page or not.

That picture is awful for practicing, it's blurry and it looks weird. The internet is full of high resolution photos, use those.
And by practicing what I mean is doing things that'll make you improve quicker than polishing everything. To say it bluntly, to improve you have to draw a lot. If you spend time polishing, you're not drawing, and most times when you're beg you polish without really paying attention to the forms. So you should improve your critical eye before doing finished pieces, or you'll develop bad habits. I seem to have plateaued recently, and it's been getting harder and harder to make myself actually draw on any given day. Before I was drawing close to 6 hours every day, and now it seems like every time I draw all that practice has gone to waste, because my skill level has kind of dropped off a bit.
I don't want to not draw, I enjoy doing art, so I guess if nothing else this is just one of those big walls I have to get past. But it's such a challenge that I'm having a hard time rekindling my drive.
How do you guys get yourself to work through your slumps? Is this one of those times when it's the most important that I draw every day, or should I give it a break and pick up again in like a week or so?

What I did was draw a few poses with Proko. Then draw and draw and draw and draw from quickposes.com/en (until I hopefully fix my anatomy), draw from references posted in this thread and try and copy Loomis' linework.

For shading + colours I watch videos + do master studies. You just have to grind forever.

I spent a long time - probably more like half an hour - to try and get the poses right. You have to really try and focus and flip the canvas every few minutes (copy and paste the photo onto the canvas) when starting out and the instant you see yourself fucking up - you might even need to delete it all. Earlier this year, it took me a few tries to even start doing the pose for every single sketch, but now it's taking fewer tries/sometimes it doesn't take more than 1 try to get it vaguely right.

If you find yourself taking more than 3 attempts, I overlay the image and trace it (I did this a few times earlier this year and now I no onger really need to do it) in order to figure out where I'm fucking up - then move onto the next one and try and get that right within 3 attempts to eyeball it.

Assign a shortcut key to flip the canvas if you can it will make it a lot easier. Over time, you'll probably need to do it less often as you symbol draw less, but if you want to be accurate you'll spam it.

Still not sure how those people draw gestures in 60 seconds on quickposes (although I do seem to be getting a bit better, but 99% of the time I don't even finish the image). If I want to grind quick poses, I usually set it to 3 minutes and 80% of the time I'll end up with something that looks human.

It kind of is. I'm trying to bruteforce some construction lines. It's wrong to say that I'm only using Loomis because I also use 3D models (eg if your base body is a girl and are not sure how the perspective works you can find a torso model and rotate it in order how to figure out how to loomis it) and other people's (construction?) lines to inform my own use of them.

Krenz's depiction of muscles (you can torrent his patreon but I didn't watch it)
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/NrPNJ

0033 (it's a very good break down of anime anatomy)
https://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=12752243

After a while at staring at both loomis AND the pose in question I think that I get a sense that the pose is 3D. I really struggled with seeing anything except the outline a few years ago but after seeing the work of good anons like Firez and Krenz, Loomis etc it comes more naturally. I just open it a few times and try and figure out where the muscles are to break the form down into blocks from observation and examining loomis etc to see where it should be. I don't think it's the most scientific approach but I just try and do it anyway.

Anyone have advice on how to enjoy drawing again? I used to love it and draw every day but I stopped because my mind got pre-occupied by someone that consumed my every thought.

It's now more than five years later and each time I try to draw it feels like a chore. Nothing seems to come out right, and I can feel a distinct disconnect between what I want to draw in my head and what my hand actually puts on the paper. I then get discouraged and quit, then feel bad about quitting. Repeat.

Does forcing yourself work? Or will it just make me resent art altogether?

However, the motivation and amount of knowledge you'd get from a degree would be extremely high.
