I sketch digitally, then I print it out in light red and ink it traditionally, then I scan it and remove the sketch.

It got to the point where I was fuddling with the col-erase pencils so much I couldn't finish the sketch. Digi sketch lets you lasso, stretch, scale, and layer your sketch.

I lifted the process from Jake Parker so I feel like it's not cheating.

I've been using tracing paper so I don't have to fuck around with erasing pencil work but within a couple days of taking the tracing paper out of the pad it curls up and becomes really hard to work with. Is this normal or should I try to find a new brand? (currently using Canson)

Day 5 going strong. Woke up early and had a lot more time to play around. My brush pen tip is flayed all to hell though so I need a replacement. I love this damn pen. The flayed tip helped with the shadows though.

Got lazy today on account of having to do catchup.

I was going to do a clean, proper drawing of Ice with the wolfskin scabbard on bristol with lots of detail and texture but the rough study sketch on copy paper was decent enough to pass. I could have converted it to blueline, printed it on nice paper and done a final pass but that would have felt like cheating.

Tomorrow will be better I hope.

Its also about practicing ink drawing in general. Which I sorely need practice doing. I overdraw a single image with a pencil, so going over the same drawing a few times with a pen isn't that big of a deal.

For all intense and purposes me redrawing the same thing to get it right is moving out of my comfort zone. If I approach everything in art as try once and only once I'll never be able to improve.

opaque tablet, I bought a $300 screen tablet but it failed to work (it never correctly connected to my computer no matter what among other issues) and I barely managed to get a refund after harassing the company, so I haven't tried others.

I want to get used to the basic tablets because I like animating but I can not for the life of me get varied line qualities.

Dedicated tabloid flatbeds are harder to find. Wide format all-in-ones are plentiful and scan well. Go to Staples and look around. Six months back I got a Brother AIO for $80, discounted because it was a discontinued model.

You can usually find used Copics being sold in lots for a decent price.

If you want to be more particular about the colors you have, ordering from Japan (via a buying service like FromJapan) or buying at Michaels (using 40% and 50% off coupons) is the way to do it.

The best way to start is to get a set of greys. You can get by with a half set just fine but a full set is obviously more versatile.

If you want color, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the huge selection. This chart is a pretty good starter guide.

Just so you know, Copic has four families of grey: Cool, Neutral, Toner and Warm. Cool and Warm are self-explanatory, Neutral and Toner are more intermediate.

I have Neutral grey markers but I'd recommend the Cool Grey as there's an extra light value (C00). An example starter set would be C00-C1-C3-C5-C7-C9-100 (black). At Blick that's a little under $40, which isn't bad since you'll have them for the rest of your life.
