IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Ref image was an old pic of a past girlfriend. This was from a couple months ago when i first got watercolors.

Any tips for watercolor? I just have the cheap tubes of primaries mostly, from wally world. I've been trying to delve into more traditional learnings, like knowing more about proportions and values and all that jazz. I've always gotten complements on shit i doodle, but I'm trying to get to where I'll be able to use that natural liking of fucking around, in combination with actual knowledge.

So i signed up for a classical drawing course, but it turns out we are mostly just left to ourselves to draw figures form the museum. I feel like i dont learn anything form it because i have problems depicting the forms in 3d. Any suggestions on what to do to get better at it, or if i should quit the course and do something simpler? i spent a whopping 4,5 hours on this, inversed it because of the light colours on the paper

I did some random shit today trying to do new things, but it makes me frustrated. I can't do a profile drawing that looks ok, so i just gave up doing it.
I feel like i have the sameface syndrome, all my drawings have the same eyes, noses and lips, and just look boring. People usually tell me i draw well, but i always feel like i have no talent at all, everything i do look exactly the same.
I don't use references because i feel ashamed doing it, so all the stuff i did so far was from my mind.
You guys think i should try other style, or continue with it? And if i used references, would i perform better and do better expressions?

The whole point of using ref is to learn from it. You learn from real life or photos and then apply that knowledge into your own work.

You can't draw from your mind what your mind does not know.

Drawing from life/ref or studying it is to fill in your database with information that requires to draw something properly. And with that knowledge you exaggerate or simplify it and turn it into your own personal art form.

Drawing from imagination is not pulling things from a magical plane. Without the knowledge of how things work you WILL always produce shit.

Learn the rules first before you try to bend or break it.

Oh also that is a shit ref, pretty portrait lighting tends to hide important information especially when it comes to construction. Drawabox misses a lot of the reasons and methods used in the actual Dynamic Sketching class. He puts a lot of emphasis into boxes and lines because his skills are so low that that's what's easiest for him to grade. In the actual class, that basic stuff only lasts a week and it's just meant as a warmup rather than an actual exercise. So after spending 6 hours checking out video tutorials and looking at various guides over the internet Ive made some determinations about foreshortening:
1. Theres MANy different methods to possibly learn and its best to try them all and find the one that works best 4u
2. The phrase 'some amount of guesswork' appears in nearly every fuckin guide. This isnt precise
2a. Know how overlapping lines work and where they cross over spatially.
3. Thinking in 3D space is the 2nd most crucial aspect to foreshortening.
4. The most crucial aspect (at least for figure drawing) of foreshortening is knowing the anatomy of the thing being foreshortened, be it a limb or torso or entire body. This is especially important because without knowledge of the muscle shapes being foreshortened its just random line guesswork instead of directed line guesswork

What does /ic/ know about foreshortening?

Because the block in is the most important part, after that is just smoothing is out which most advanced artists would think others find boring to watch because it really is just a brainless process after you've finished the block in. Color is a wholly complex thing, there's no simple answer that could be given in a sentence. Painting is just the process in which the art is made, everything else is built upon the fundamentals.

Good joke, there's a reason S works for the legs and its because that's how the legs balance on the ground. You need to make sure the arms balance with the whole body as well and that's all there is to it. There's no formulas, stop looking for them. Just draw it as it is.

you aren't really trying, even if you think you are. it takes thousands of hours of practice to be able to draw a face in 10 minutes. right now you are sketchily drawing in symbols of what you think your reference looks like instead of drawing what it actually shows you, and you aren't taking your time. in the redline, you can see the volumes of shadow, midtone and highlight that exist all over your reference's face. you need to focus on getting the proportions, locations, and value of these areas correctly first, before you work in the detail of the drawing. I didnt redline the hair because it is largely gradient, but the same is true of the hair. it has vivid bright highlights that transition to dark shadows.

Also, I realized that the eye was off on the right one after I started darkening it up. Getting the eyes lined up properly and in the right proportions is still something I'm practicing.

I can see what you're saying about the head. Didn't really notice that before. And every time I draw an ear it just feels huge or too small. What's the best guide to drawing interiors

I have a really hard time doing perspective and knowing what color pallet to choose

>> No.3163706

>>3163705
Interiors and perspective are one and the same. You have to be good at perspective before reliably being able to do interiors. Interiors are easy though, it's just projection. You learn it in Loomis, Perspective Made Easy and Scott's How to Draw. You're thinking too abstract with color pallet, just think simply. How would you design your own room if you could with all the money in the world? Repaint it? Add more furniture? A specific theme?

It's much too technical for me to grasp, The measurements usually throw me off

Maybe some obscure japanese book on specifically interiors

>>3163723
There's no such thing as too technical, you just need to put in the time. Measurements throwing you off? They're there to make sure you're on point. You can keep looking if you want, references are the best thing there are for interiors.

I think you should try the traditional section of ctrl+paint before going forward with the book, those videos teach you how to fix the problems you're having, measure more accurately and some tricks like looking at the specific angle or the negative space.
Anyway this is probably just because you're inexperienced and still have a symbol drawing habit, focus on drawing /a lot/ and analyzing what you do, don't just do one exercise. Analyze even when you're not drawing, keep the eye trained. Relax if results aren't good yet, but also ask yourself why they aren't.
