I know this is an autistic question, so bear with me. I'm rather good when it comes to sketching and drawing with graphite but I always find myself avoiding using ink. Like I almost fear messing up the drawing and having to completey scrap whatever I was working on. I find myself drawing first, then inking over whatever it is I drew.

Is there any techniques, methods or tips to get over pen/inking confidence. Should I keep a sketchbook specifically for ink works? Dank you.

Someone linked a video in the previous thread (or the one before that?) of someone talking about this. If you feel like you're tracing over you pencil drawing, your pencil drawing is too detailed. You should never be tracing over pencil lines. Just do a couple doodles in this fashion and see how it works out.

Aight fuck that, Im starting to learn to draw today. I'm not really aiming high, just wanna get decent enought to be able to regularly and semi-effortlessly create content impressive to average person.
Trick is, I fell in love with a brush pen (if that's even the name of this thing) my gf's sister left around after going abroad. It's a Pentel GFKP Japan from what it says on the pen. Is there a specific route for maximizing gains in scope of using that and a cheap ass bic yellow fine pens as my weapons of choice? Any bad habits to avoid?
Wish me luck, I set a target of being able to participate in inktober next year.

So I gave it another go for day three and ended drawing two more images.

Left is from a reference and right is me attempting to do a front version of that reference. I did use a light table for some of it and then eye-balled it. Lots of practice/study required outside of the inktober challenge most certainly.

Lots of fuck ups, I wasn't nearly as attentive as it should have been. Today just isn't my day, lets see what tomorrow brings us.

Since you're an absolute beginner I recommend you to start doing line exersices with normal pen first. Good luck

Tfw i wanted to do this earlier but I only did it within the hour again lol im bad at managing time

Anyway this is based on stories from /x/ when people would go into the woods and actually find some tough wires tied to trees, areas where ATV's can go past. If driving fast enough, it'd slice your head off. People behind these stories suggest that whoever put those wires there are hiding something in the area, important enough to put an almost invisible death trap.

I realize my symmetry is ass but I wanted to submit within the day here (CST btw).

Day 3

>> No.3160317

Ok, so I got this issue when- I can draw people at least...somewhat decently. BUT when it comes to making a background for them, I am just so at a loss. It's like I forget what a person in a room with things looks like. Same thing goes with architecture in general. I think restricting myself to 8.5x11in paper has possibly been limiting me or I don't know.

I actually get more apprehensive because I feel like I have to have the room/environment perfectly proportioned to the person/thing I drew, and it feels like the background and the person are like two different works merged into one. >>3160279 is mine.

Maybe I should finally move to drawing people and their backgrounds. It's like I have an issue with space and dimension, I don't know what it is specifically. I think maybe I've spent too much time looking things/drawing things up close?

It's like...if I tried to draw >>3159186 from my imagination, it'd just go off the paper. I mean it's easy to say to just work small. But I don't know. Maybe I should try to make drawings that seem distanced one day.

I feel like I'm going everywhere with this- anybody know where I'm getting at- with some clue at least?

>> No.3160328

>>3160317
Anon I'd definitely recommend drawing your subjects in an environment. I wouldn't know what advice to give, as there are many ways to tackle this, but it helps to view it as an entire composition, and maybe work from foreground to background. Maybe do t think of what environment you'd like to give the subject, but rather go into the drawing thinking what scene is taking place. What's the narrative, what story does this one drawing tell.

>> No.3160331

>>3160328
I will definitely take this into consideration- it's funny- I can simplify things into shapes and lead into the bigger picture when referencing something, but, man, add an environment and I am completely gone for some reason.

Thanks anon- one of these days I will make an inktober drawing related to this answer. I will make time to at least storyboard a little.

Seems like a good thread. My ink bottle is running out, and I want to get the really good stuff this time.

What I want (in order) is:
Fade/UV proof
As dark as possible
Water resistant (so I can go over with watercolours)
Usable with technical pens, fountain pens, brushes.

Any recommendations based on what I need it to do?
If it's impossible to do all of it, I might be able to get 2 different bottles (as long as it's UV proof)

This is really great, has a ton of depth and details, but the perspective seems off. The pedestal seems to have the lines converging in a different vanishing point than the floor (which seems to bend towards the character) and the railling on the back, which has yet another vanishing point.

Perspective and proportions are off. The border of the street seem quite thick compared to the size of the door and the electric post. Your lines converge nowhere, the walkway is made of parallel lines and the street border doesn't follow the same vanishing point as the wall of the building, which you can see the roof top and, yet, the lines in the front are parallel.

>>3159175
The main problem I see with this one (other than anatomy) is the posing, it seems unnatural for someone to stand like this. Try "feeling" the flow, do more figure drawing of athletes and stuff and this will be less of a problem.

>>3159091
You seem to have a problem with the back arm and perspective. The arm length seems to be that of foreshortening, and yet the size of the hand is kept normal, thus making it read awkwardly. The vanishing points of the top of the seat, the plate fixed to the floor and the windows seem to converge in different positions, some planning beforehand would fix that tho.

First I did a fairly loose sketch with a HB pencil. Most important there where to get the shapes right to create depth. Then I went over it with the brush pen. Most of the corals where first marked with circles for where I wanted them, and then free handed using reference.
The same approach where used on my day 3.

To understand how to put down the lines (which I think are pretty crappy with that drawing, my hands where literally shaking from too much coffee), I've used a fatter brush pen for live model drawings once a week the last 6-8 months, to force it into the back of my head.

But basics: draw with the brush strokes. Learn to hold the pen in a variety of ways to get the angles right, or rotate the paper.
Start with the thin part of the line, and end with the thicc. Gives you more control when varying line weight in a single stroke.
Draw from elbow or shoulder when possible, work large to make it more viable.

(I've changed the levels on the pic to make the pencil more visible)

how does this work in comparison to comic inkers, though? from what i can make out they just trace over what the pencils person does.

My only real tip is to completely stop using a eraser (or digital), for a few months.
Even better is to only use ink. A ballpoint is a fairly good way to transfer from pencil to ink.

You need to get over the fear of fucking up, and instead get used to doing it proper from the start. It will work if you keep at it.

This is honestly the most key advice! I am going to try it tonight, but intuitively it already makes so much sense.

Your art is amazing too!

It's very different depending on the artist(s).
If you read "The Art of Comic-Book Inking", you'll have examples of multiple artists inking the same pencil. With massive differences in approach to the pencil. But there you have inkers going over detailed pencils.
However if you check out Inoue Takehiko (Mangaka: Vagabond, Slam Dunk, Real) on YT, you'll see that his pencils are very minimalistic, compared to the absolutely insane inks.

It was actually a friend who taught me that when he teached me can control for graffiti.
I know it's common knowledge among professional inkers, but it's interesting how the approaches are the same even with different mediums.

And thanks!

The inker's role has diminished quite a bit in recent years.

Traditionally the inker did a fair share of the work. Pencillers would draw in the figures but stop short at details. A lot of what they drew was shorthand that the inker would translate. Often there would be no lighting at all in the pencils, it was created entirely by the inker.

These collaborations were more or less equal. The penciller did the first half of the drawing and the inker did the second half.

With the rise of the mega detailed Image artists that changed. The Image artists drew very detailed pencils that were less open to interpretation, even going as far as drawing in lineweights and hatching, details that were once at the discretion of the inkers and never make the printed page in penciled form.

Since then that mode of working has become standard. Pencils are tight and the inker is more of a technician who xeroxes the pencils into pure black and white images. But now with page rates dropping so low the growing trend is for pencillers to ink themselves to collect two rates, and they typically revert to the original ratio of 50/50 pencils and inks.

The same thing happened with writing. In the heyday of Marvel the writer would throw out a plot and it fell to the penciller to break it up into pages and panels. Now it's the norm for a writer to dictate every single panel, sometimes even the composition, reducing the artistry of the penciller.

You can see the trend. In the greatest period of American comics, the Silver Age, the writer, penciller and inker were all artists who worked in tandem splitting the work evenly. Starting in the worst periodv of American comics, the 90s, pencillers took on many duties of the inker and writers took on many duties of the pencillers. In a medium that had once been ruled by the artist, writers hold the most clout with artists being technicians to translate the writer's vision and inkers are an afterthought.

#4

Was in an odd mood. Actually was going to really half-ass it more than I did, and draw some sort of chalk drawing (yeah I know chalk drawings underwater would never happen) of a murder victim on my hand and put it underwater. But then, I got thinking how many lost items in the pond nearby me were in there from my childhood.

I thought the composition would be lame with just my hand, so I went outside and added leaves like how the pond has them right now.

With the time I saved from this- I might as well use it to practice a little before bed.

I don't know why I'm so nervous...almost scared about actually trying. Tomorrow I will absolutely save at least 10 minutes for storyboarding (I am really indecisive in general) and an hour to work on it.
