Do you guys know the details of his journey? What was his job? How long did it take for him to go from noob to doing art full time?

Yeah, he talks about it in his interview with Bobby Chiu. He pretty much started off as wanting to do concept art/illustration, but then as he learned more about the fundamentals and realism, he ended up liking doing that and teaching more. Although, he mentions that it's all the same to do concept art/illustration/whatever because they're all based on the fundamentals. He did multiple jobs, so I'm not really sure about that part. 5 years probably?

What do you mean? I've never gone through entire sketchbooks (with the exception of Miles) but most of their improvement comes from high bulks of drawings done over a consistent period. Miles went to an atelier, so it's not like he or any of the others with access to guided instruction just guessed their way to improving.

I've been pretty bummed out by my art lately, so it's really motivating to see people I look up to's art from the start. Now I'm excited to see what I'll be capable of doing a decade from now.

I just found this board and it happened to coincide with my renewed initiative to warm up with studies before my regular daily drawing. I'm not a pro and I don't aspire to work in the shitty industry. If I can make it on my own work and merit that would be great, but most of my art idols died poor or committed suicide, mayhap I follow their lead some day. In meantime & in between time, art is a pursuit of self improvement. You are no better than a domesticated dog if you need your ego stroked in order to keep on the path. You can go play a video game if you want to grind achievements.

One thing I noticed on that site some of these "top streak" guys are just fulfilling their commitment to submit everyday, but looking through their work there is little growth. They seem to just repeat their symbols & everything looks the same. That is the result of ego stroking. That is not intended to offend, if you are satisfied, then you to you. My favorite stuff is seeing the W.I.P. images from sketch to finish. I hesitate to crit or comment on a lot of submissions since no request was made.

To the person running the site your fears of a popularity contest are well grounded. But, as will all these services, there is an odd balance between lowest common denominator for popularity/usage & exclusivity for skill development. What would I know though, I only started submitting last week.

Feeling pressured to make "good" art tends to leave you stuck in your comfort zone. I'd rather see artists fuck up something ambitious than nail something they already know. Just make sure that you put some time in and give people who might critique it something to work with. Photographs don't look that good. Or maybe it'd be better to say that they don't look good in the same way paintings look good. It kinda does a disservice to the piece. Photos excel at conveying objective reality but paintings like that are unmatched in conveying mood and tone.

Werenskiold's doesn't look like photographs, it looks liquified in places, or subdued and devoid of noisy brushwork like something rendered to the clarity of a photograph would and kind of reminds me of Christian Krogh the impressionist more than straight up realism - I think he was in the circles anyway

Some stats:
- We have been getting between 2 and 5 new registered users every day for a while now. In total 171 registered.
- On average theres 80 unique people on the site every day. And 250 uniques each week.
- Site just hit 10k total pageviews. Quite big because of all the single submission views people go into.
- Ramune is by far the most popular with 400 hits on his profile alone. For reference, viewing yesterday's submissions has 300, and todays 1500.
