3148274 No.3148274[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

I'm 30, and I wasted the last 8 years(8,000 hours) trying to get better at drawing anime. And for what? I don't have a degree, I don't have any actual skills that are productive in society, I end up sacrificing much of my social life so I can get better at drawing weebshit, and in the end, it was a big waste of fucking time. There are a lot of people who talk about how they wished drawing anime sooner but they don't realize how fortunate they are by never partaking in this fucking weebshit.

Whenever I go to family gatherings and they ask me what I've been up too, i'm too ashamed to tell them I draw chinese cartoons while everyone else is a successful business owner, engineer, doctor etc. Drawing anime is by difficult, time consuming, and at the end of the day even if you do manage to get good, you essentially developed a skill that will lead to social stigma. Grown ass man still drawing cartoons. Forget trying to get good, stop wasting your time with this.

It's a fallacy non-artist retards post because they don't understand how improving at art actually works. No one learns one style and then is stuck with it for the rest of their life. If you actually understand the fundamentals and can fucking draw, it takes one afternoon to learn a different style. Also, probably the most popular style these days is the calarts Disney style and its slightly more realistic version, which is incredibly easy for anime artists to adapt due to the huge similarities.

Half of Riot's filled with weebs, and a lot of other big and medium sized studios are filled with people with an anime or anime hybrid style.
Hell, even Blizzard has a bunch of artists who have a very anime-ish style
Just draw with the style that comes to you naturally and it'll work out, even if said style is full blown anime you'll succeed as long as you work hard

but everything there leans toward realism, with anime influences on the pretty faces, like every well known patreon artist, so as anon above said you have to know how to draw really well in the first place

Doing shit like that isn't gonna get you anywhere unless you start a patreon lol, but we were talking about the style, i.e the big shiny eyes with a pointy chin, not what you decide to do with it.
As long as you're good at drawing anime and have a good design sense you could literally be hired by any studio that's known for doing stylized games, since your style doesn't really matter since it won't be featured in the final game.
Loish (someone with a very cartoony style) even did concept work for Horizon zero dawn, a realistic looking game.
Your style literally does not matter. As long as it's appealing to some extent and you know how to design and draw you're gucci my man

But that's bullshit. Everyone loves cartoons. Even people who don't watch cartoons themselves realize that the ones for children are not being drawn BY children, because children can't draw or legally be employed at studios. You're just making up reasons to be mad.

well congrats, thats what you get for ripping a style from it's narrative context, anime is meant for comics and animation, it’s simplified so it can be drawn easily over a gorillian frames/panels. It’s funny that DA struggles to produce a single illustration in that style let alone actual storytelling as intended.

Following your passion is never a waste of time. If you're embarrassed because you think others will look down on you for doing what you love, you're either incredibly insecure, or you really don't love drawing all that much. In which case, quit drawing. Do something you actually enjoy instead of looking for community acceptance just to feel okay about yourself and what you do. That's kind of pathetic, to be completely honest. It's more embarrassing to be an insecure grown ass man than it is to be a content grown ass man doing what he loves and not giving a fuck what others think.

Going to a community/commuter school is a pretty good alternative. I lucked out because my art professors are amazing and it's pretty motivating to actually talk to people with similar goals as you (plus I got an art scholarship within a month of attending, so I'm going for free).

Also, I'm sorry, anon. If you're still in school, I hope you get more free time once you complete it. A bunch of pro artists (especially vis dev guys) have engineering backgrounds, so it's never too late for you to get into art.

What did you do to get an art scholarship? Did you impress the school with your portfolio or something?

>> No.3149274 [DELETED]

I didn't know it existed, so I didn't have the opportunity to slyly ask someone to check my portfolio under the guise of asking for my critique. One of my professors just asked to speak to me after class and recommended me to the prof in charge of the scholarship.

If you're at a community college, you should probably snoop around and ask other people if they're on an art talent grant or something. Not to sound like an ass, but based on some of the other recipients I know (including me), the bar isn't too high skill-wise.
