Your pic seems useful but i don't get how it applies to my drawing. ref has a pretty high contrast and uses the full value range. I often used the color picker to check my values were right. Still i dont feel like im getting your pic and it looks so much better even though its much simpler. Any places/books where i could learn this? Ive only gone through Ctrl Paint's rendering videos and they're okay when it comes to technique, but I'm feeling im missing out some theory.

Not him but you're probably color picking details which might have crazy local values and you erroneously believe those values are mostly describing the forms underneath. If the reference you're using is very high definition (say, it picks up such things as sharp highlights on single strands of hair, or darker values in skin pigmentation) you 'll be fucked if you can't reconstruct (simplify) in your head what values would be on the pure form, without those details. That's why his drawing looks solid, while yours looks like it's covered in flowing mercury or something.

Not him, but here's what I think:
Your goal is not to replicate the reference exactly. Your goal is to simplify the reference. Trying to capture every single nuance in the values early on is going to look bad.
Your study right now, is just a sketch. Ignore the details. The most important shadows go first.
Think of the forms in a hierarchy. In this case, the basic shape of the wings would be much higher up than each groove of the feathers.

Any places with a bunch of photos of nude (or almost nude) people doing actual action poses like running, jumping, fighting etc? Quickposes is okay but I feel like half my practice has just been from modelling shoots.

In the book thread I uploaded a pose Bible. Might not be as dynamic of poses as you want but sometimes I will look up trading cards from marvel comics because they are both character based and usually use action poses. Hope you find what you're looking for
