Looking for some critique on this character I'm developing. She's going to be the main protagonist of a superhero-esque story--in a "mild-mannered Clark Kent" sort of way--and I'm wondering how she's looking for that role. Another thing I'm trying to account for is the fact that her superpowers are going to come as a result of a transformation. Thus, she's got to have some distinctive features to carry over between forms.

Also, any feedback on technical details would be appreciated.

Brian pls help, how can I get more accurate colours.

I'm trying to do stuff from life for the first time and I'm struggling with how to get accurate or more emphasized colours like you do with your paintings. I know it's digital and you do traditional, but you seem to have a pretty good grasp and I wanna bring that into my digital.

Go to the beginner thread, I believe draw threads are for more finished pieces or more developed artists, these seem like practice doodles.

Keep up the work though anon, I really like the one on the far right looks like something you could take into an actual painting, though I'd take it to alternate style rather than here.

Ignore that faggot anon and keep up the good work, no slacking!

Go to the Alternative Style thread, stop doing bust shots only your only limiting your abilities. Your lines are sloppy, slow down take your time with them a good rule is if something is over lapping or closer it generally has thicker lines. A good video to watch on this is by Scott Robertson.

Even though the subject is a vehicle it can be applied to everything.

Colour is okay but once again sloppy and you could definitely do a lot better so stop rushing and take your time. Good thing is you seem to have some understanding about translucency which is good, but at this point focus more on understanding. Can you do a a perfect rendered sphere from different angles? My guess is no so go back and get that down, you don't have to solely focus on those sort of text book things all the time, do some fun pieces you like to keep you interested in the topic, all work and no play makes you a dull anon.

Design, well I think you already know what I'm gonna say...sloppy, but also boring and nothing that would stick in my memory. Before starting a drawing plan out the characters life, what is his/her interest what are they like personality wise. An example of this would be Johnny Depp's Character Jack Sparrow, in an interview he said that the things attached to Jacks hair actually came from his biggest inspiration for the character Keith Richards a rock and roll legend. When hanging out with Keith he noticed that he had weird random objects attached to his hair, Kieth told Depp that wherever he went he collected something and attached it too his hair as a sort of memory trinket. Depp thought this was pretty interesting and Jack Sparrow being a sort of rebel and a rock star type personality he then bought this into the characters design. This is what you want to think about when you design a character, because it gives them life and makes the viewer think more.

the same rules apply, you shouldn't be painting according to the colors and light you are looking at, you should be making art. even in digital, you want to apply the same rules as traditional. Darks need to be darker, so the light has as much impact as it would as if you are looking at it in person.

That's what makes nature so difficult to imitate, is that it is at once both light, and the absence of light. Whether digital or traditional, you cannot work with both light AND dark. So the appearance of life in great artworks isn't because they just painted what they were looking at, it's because they found a way to imitate the interplay of light and dark found in nature, in their own work.

Try doing 1 or 2 greyscale studies from life to practice exaggerating light and dark.

A lot of learning colors simply comes down to learning values.

Anime is not my stuff and If I'va said something that is not applied to anime or something, don't hesitate to correct me.

Go from general to specific, probably you've already heard that, but it's important. Get your general values and colors and then you paint hair-by-hair. Also, keep the colors simple.

Here's the prosess
-Start by aplying a basic color with the major values(big soft brush)
-Push those values and apply basic shading
-Details. In this state you can play with the colors, but if you do it before, you'll get confused

>> No.3143392

A lot of the "you need to know the rules to break them" is very much centered on an understanding of the rules of light and dark, and imitating them in your work. A good outline is nice, pretty colors are good and all, but the only real rule of art that I think matters is if you can transliterate a light source into whatever painting or drawing medium it is you are working in. Getting it perfect is what artists work towards their whole life, but all of them have the same basic understanding of imitating nature in their work, not by painting what you are looking at, but by creating artwork that creates the illusion of what they are looking at.

So just remember that in painting there's no perfect way to express exactly what you are looking at, translated into paint or pixels, but being able to iterate on the values, lines, and colors to improve on what you did before is vital to the artistic spirit.

Light and Darkness, and their relationship, is the only thing art needs to be about. A painting with a perfect interplay of those two things is the only concept you need. It expresses humanities feelings on morality, the afterlife, each other, fears, hopes, everything, and nothing. Even if it's simply a painting of a bottle of soda.

>think out a design/painting, make a mind map if you have to
>collect inspirations and reference for your piece
>study the pictures try to get a feel for what you're drawing and which images are most important
>start thumbnailing coming up with an idea for a painting/drawing
>take you're favorite one and move forward with it
>draw
>if you get stuck on where to go with you're drawing look at you're collected images/references
>repeat till complete
>eventually you won't need to collect the images and you'll be able to do stuff solidly from imagination

if you have literal severe autism, and can draw cities from memory after a helicopter ride, you can make it as an illustrator in 2017.

Great fine artists who "work from imagination" don't do it based on a photographic "visual library". Look at Murakami. He's not photographically recreating images like Kim Jung Gi, a talented illustrator, but he works from his limited imagination and makes the focus on his creativity. If you asked Murakami to draw realistically from his head without reference I doubt he could do it as convincingly as KJG if he could even manage it at all. But that's not what makes a great fine artist.

Anybody can be creative, not everybody can draw from imagination and memory.

You learn by drawing the object from imagination then studying images of said object, figuring out your mistakes then trying to draw it once again and you repeat till you can or at least get it close.

>Anybody can be creative, not everybody can draw from imagination and memory.

Unless you have the IQ of a chimp I refuse to believe that if a person studies and draws for hours each day, builds his visual library and gathers a good understanding of something that he couldn't then draw said thing he's studied from imagination.

You both are wrong and are giving awful advice, please stop or post your work and prove me wrong with you're amazing art skills. Your giving unprofessional advice and it's pissing me off, you're what killing /ic/.

Philip Guston, Giorgio di Chirico, and Pablo Picasso. All incredibly creative, all relied heavily on references for their work, whether abstracted or idealized.

Think of it this way, what is more valuable for an artist, being able to create, or being able to imagine?

Picasso didn't imagine his great paintings, he was too busy creating them.

You "refuse" to believe that, yet you probably unironically attribute KJG's ability to draw completely from his head and memory as "Godhood". It's one or the other /ic/. Either it's talent and "godhood" and is impossible to learn, or anybody can learn to draw like KJG if they work hard enough.

Can't have it both ways. Impossible to have a conversation if you believe two conflicting things equally.

Yes I do believe that it is a great feat to be able to draw most anything from memory, do I believe it deserves the word Godhood? No, nor have I ever referred any artist to "Godhood", they're people who study and took time to learn something until they got it correct.

>anybody can learn to draw like KJG if they work hard enough.

That is the only correct thing which I believe in your post, I don't believe in talent I believe in hard work. Talent is earned not given.

I think it's more achievable to be able to draw like Michelangelo, Monet, or Rembrandt than it is to learn to draw like KJG.

We just disagree. There's some artists on /ic/ who are more suited to being illustrators, and some who are more suited to being fine artists, and sometimes people on here are spending time trying to be something they're not.

Take this redline with a grain of salt, largely doing it because I like the drawing and thought it'd be fun to add to (with the added benefit of helping you out, potentially).

If there's anything beneficial I have to say, I feel like you could make this drawing stronger by establishing and reinforcing more of a focal point, and by paying closer attention to negative space.

First personal sketch after 2 weeks of art school.

We've done at least 15 hours worth of blind contours and it's wild how much it's improved my hand eye coordination. STILL A HELL OF A LONG WAY TO GO OF COURSE but that's what the next four years are for.

Also saw a crazy lookin guy on the subway yesterday and he turned out to be our nude model today so that was fuckin wild.

Ya it's one of the top 5 in the world for concept art. A lot of graduated end up going straight into the industry after graduation. Hell there's some that get in even before graduating. There's a guy in his second year who's gettin his tuition fees sponsored by Ubisoft rn iirc.

Right now we're doing a shit ton of blind contour, the Hawthorne method of painting, gestures, and point to point drawing.
Also a got composition, colour theory, and perspective classes on the side.

We've been doing full body blind contours in life drawing, and in principles of drawing we've done vases, logs, stuffed animals, some weird lookin brass horn thing, a cup. Lots of different stuff.

I don't have a blog right now but I should probably start one up.

Wow, you have such an amazing opportunity being able to interact with such top tier people and grow along side. Did you have a scholarship too to get in? Must've been drawing for a while and got really good grades throughout school?

>There's a guy in his second year who's gettin his tuition fees sponsored by Ubisoft rn iirc.
Holy cow, I wonder how he managed to land that kind of gig. He must hold a ton of potential. or something. I've never heard of that before.

>Right now we're doing a shit ton of blind contour, the Hawthorne method of painting, gestures, and point to point drawing.
I've heard of these but not the last one, point to point drawing? Sounds interesting though on how they build you up in the beginning.

>Also a got composition, colour theory, and perspective classes on the side.
So many at once, haha, what's your strengths and weaknesses? I hear despite how amazing the top art students are, they always have some weakness in an area.

>We've been doing full body blind contours in life drawing, and in principles of drawing we've done vases, logs, stuffed animals, some weird lookin brass horn thing, a cup. Lots of different stuff.
Thanks for being so specific! I guess it's just your typical life drawing class, but I didn't know they placed such a big focus on blind contours.

>I don't have a blog right now but I should probably start one up.
When you do make one, be sure to share it! Good luck on your future studies! I hope to be able to follow your journey and what kind of place you will be by the time you've graduated.

No scholarship no. Despite being so good at what it does the school doesn't bring in much money since they try to keep costs as low as they can and as a result only hand out scholarships to those who need the financial aid.
My grades were shit actually!! I failed my last year of highschool and just barely passed my second time around. Highschool made me so miserable that I had a god awful time getting work done. The school looks solely at your artwork though, thank god. The founder understands that highschool is straight bullshit LOLOL.

>I've heard of these but not the last one, point to point drawing?
Point to point drawing is just a really simple method of drawing from life accurately. It revolves around simplifying whatever you're drawing into points and then connecting them kinda like a constellation(??? idfk how to spell that and my phone's givin me no options here gg sorry). I can't explain this nearly as well as my instructor did but it's basically for simplifying and measuring.

>what's your strengths and weaknesses?
My gestures, posing, and expressions are GODAWFUL. As of right now I have NOOO IDEA how I'm supposed to put out this nice smooth looking gesture when I got the immediacy of 1 minute poses going on. My strong point is probably colour and value, sculpting with light, that kinda stuff. I'm miles ahead of where I'm supposed to be in the Hawthorne painting we're currently doing. Mostly because I work way too fast but I also don't have that hard of a time seeing the different values in the still life that's set up.

>I didn't know they placed such a big focus on blind contours.
Yep yep!! Right now they're trying to teach us to get our sense of sight and touch intermingled and then also getting our brain and hand to be able to coordinate well with that information; which involves doing hours and hours of blind contour.

I think it would be natural to squint your eyes (maybe not as hard as in the photo here) with that mouth expression. Right now it looks like her upper eyelids are simply lowered a bit.
Not sure if that's the problem, just my 2 cents.

>Dunno how to get large smooth areas that come up on hard, detailed edges.
You either need to get better at wetting the canvas with water, paying close attention to the edges, or layer darker colors over lighter, when they're fully dry. If you want to try it, they sell liquid latex, which you can use to block off edges. Your sky looks like it dried while you were working on it - did you wet the entire sky, even the parts in the tower, and then do your wash? The way to do this is to soak the entire sky - anywhere blue is going to be, you want it wet, like shiy wet, and then start your washes - but when laying down the water, don't go all the way to the edges of the tower - when you start the wash, use your brush, like a small round, to push the wash to the straight edge, to define it.

You could also put a light wash of the blue where the tower is, and then lay the beige over that. A tower that high is going to reflect a little bit of blue the closer you get to the top. Like a 3-4% wash of blue behind the tower as an underpainting, if there are any pure white highlights preserve them. Let the blue completely dry, then do the other colors on top. I call it local color.

>Paper still buckles a bit when wet
You need heavier paper, like 300gsm (140lb).

Also, don't staple it. You need to stretch it. Staples just don't create the surface tension you get from craft taping it down and letting it dry completely - you get paper that's like a drum head and will not buckle.

One last thing - don't tape your edges like that. Paint past the edges of the frame, just put down pencil lines. If you matt it after, you can hide where you went past. This way, you're losing part of the painting when you matt it. You're also rising tearing the paper. That blue tape is for taping walls, not paper. You'll never get a clean line anyway, and the paint will build up at the edge, like it has on some spots on your painting.

Just came back from a couple months break of drawing. I thought I'd be shit but I'm just as if not better than before. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to draw anymore since I'm back in school but where there's a will, there's a way.

In other news, I'm thinking about getting a model for posing sometime soon because I suck ass at bodies and Kentaro Yabuki has some 3D model releasing in a few months in collaboration with SH Figuarts for like $60. Here's a link to it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Figuarts-Yabuki-Kentaro-Action-Figure/dp/B071KWBV19.. I'm also gonna pick up this book to learn some nsfw poses: https://www.amazon.com/Sexual-Hibiki-Otsuki-x30BB-JAPANESE/dp/B01M09QX2O.. I think this is a good start to an nsfw artist journey so maybe you guys should look into those products too. If anybody has any other recommendations that'd be great as well ^^

Yeah I don't know for sure but maybe they're trying to do some promotional stuff to get his name out there for whatever project he does next. I somewhat want him to return to to love ru but I'd understand if he's tired of that and if everyone else is tired of that too. I just hope that he takes a break and streams occasionally like redjuice because those are always interesting to watch. Anyways, there's a video they made yesterday showing how kentaro would use the figures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWbP48yrh8E . I don't know if he actually uses these to draw but it'd make sense because his stuff always has such consistent proportions it's ridiculous. Either way, he's a anatomical genius so he can use models all he wants imo

You're describing almost exactly how I did it, except the dark blue wash, where I left out the tower. If I did dark blue near the tower,I feel like it would sacrifice the crispness & be impossible to lighten to the right value. Everything else was soaked though.

>You need heavier paper, like 300gsm (140lb).
thought this might be it, but I checked and it's 140lb.

What do I look for with craft tape? It's quite like a drum now, byt stapling is a huge pain in the ass, so if there's a tape solution I'd MUCH rather be doing that.

Thanks for the tip about the blue tape, but I've generally had really good results with it. I just have to be vigilant about wiping the edges.

Also, forgot to mention: the paper dries to a perfectly-flat drum head, it just buckles while wet. Unfortunately, that causes pigment to pool during vibrant washes.

Well, he spent 2.75 hours on the drawing and is talking most of the time. Lucas is probably the weakest teacher of the three in drawing thought (out of him, Erik, and Jeff). It's too bad they chose to include this in the online course; it doesn't seem like they did any re-takes on anything, which is a shame because there are a few drawings that don't look good

Missed the opportunity with not adding him in the show , imagine Silvester Stallone beating his wife to death , would be nice change of pace from all the rape scenes

How often do you strike that note of perfect feeling while drawing , just doing that one peace for your self experimenting having fun, having that joyous felling . and I dont mean just liking to draw so it doesnt bother you to do studies , I mean really having fun while doing it

Ugh, its probably the same amount as when I was a kid but if you did it by ratio it certainly wouldn't be.
Like I'd only draw a few hours a week as a kid and it was always fun.
now I draw like a few hours a day and its only fun a few hours a week.
good brushwork.

hi ahren! i have a question i want to ask you. how do you start your construction when you draw human figures? your sketches look so wobbly yet they always look so cool. i was just wondering if there's a technique/method to how you build your people. or you might have parkisons!
