you're not thinking of the mouth as an arc, which is why it looks so flat/out of place. the lips are not flat as a line but arc towards the inside at the extremities. it's probably the most common mistake with mouths. Tried making a quick way to explain it in a visual way, it helped me a lot when I stopped thinking about it that way.

whenever you want to make a smile/groan just remember the way your teeth arc. Lips usually coil and stick around your teeth to a certain point. hope it helps.

I personaly don't like to use a textured brush for the whole drawing. I usually use the flat round brush to draw and block colors and maybe some edges, and then you render with the soft round default brush and a textured brush.
If you still don't want to use the round brushes, at least changes it when rendering diferent materials

Latissimus goes into the arm pit. hers continues as an unified form all the way to the shoulder.

You correctly show the left side of her body, but when it comes to her left arm it looks as if you were looking at it straight on, not showing the side plane of the arm.

>But aren't photos of other people good enough?
not for fine arts practice. If I wanted to be an illustrator I'd grind out photostudies everyday, but that's not really where I want to allocate my skills.

Like the other anon said, I don't have models. I used to go to coffee shops to draw people but I got kicked out of one cause someone complained and haven't tried again since. I can go to figure drawing classes but I don't like being the best artist in a room full of 60 year olds, and honestly doing self portraits and drawing my hands is just as good of practice.

Working from a mirror and drawing what's around me also has the added bonus of if I get tired I can just stop and do something else. If I'm at figure drawing and I've already done my one good drawing for that day, I'm kinda stuck there until the session ends. And then I end up just kinda screwing around and not drawing seriously because I don't have the energy for it.

As far as "don't I want to draw attractive people", that's mainly what I did at coffee shops. I drew a lot of attractive girls, and it was fun, and I've drawn a streamer who I'm friends with over 50 times probably. But I find I'm more experimental when I'm working on drawing myself. Sometimes when I have a model I feel pressure (especially if they're attractive) to make a good painting of them. If it's a portrait of me idgaf and I can make it as ugly or stupid as I want. That depends on the model obviously, I've had girls pose for paintings and encourage me to make as weird of a painting as possible, but that's not the norm in my experience.

Please use some references for the clothing and specially that mask, it's a very nooby design, with zero construction.
Avoid placing the gun in that profile prespective, give it a little more depth, and also it's standing in an impossible way on the floor.
I see you have worked a lot on placing the shadow, but there's a lot of weird shadows and lights that make no sense. Try to think on the overall lightning on the figure rather than individually on every object.
Finally, unlike the other anon, I hate the head, it seems like a random shape with eyes and a two-lines mouth. I don't know if that line is a nostril or what. It's just confusing, and the lack of shadows doesn't help

I meant link to the podcast sorry if I was unclear. Just listened to it and it seemed like he was being fairly respectful. He went up and asked politely if he could draw them and if they said no he left them alone. Kinda sucks that one little complaint was enough to turn the owner against him since he was doing it for a year.

The head works fine, you just don't like it personally which is ok, just don't pass that off as legit objective critique. The way the gun stands works fine too, saw it on the reference I used.

Getting this offended from someone trying to help you
I was talking about that mask when I said nooby, and it really deserves worse.
When I said the shadows were inconsistent, basically I refered to the half bottom of the figure being in shadow, which makes no sense. There was some other small details, that you kind of could see in the quick paintover
And don't get this attached to the head. I dindn't want to change the design of the head, and I tried to fix it with some rendering and shit, but still is flat and unconsistent. It will probably cause you many problems if your plan is to make a comic with it, which implies drawing that head in many perspectives.
And something else I realised when paintovering, DON'T paint shadows with black. Use a cooler or a warmer color, but not black.
The paintover is a bit messy and you were using a more cellshaded kind of painting, but you get the idea.
Also, the overall colors have been changed, that a problem with my monitor or something. Ignore that

I got ''offended'' because the ''please use some references'' part really got on my nerves, first of all because I did use them, and secondly because it came off as condescending to me. I really, REALLY hate being treated with sufficiency. That and the way you worded your other tips made it seem to me like you were one of those anons who give ''critique'' without actually knowing what the fuck they're talking about, but your paintover clearly proves otherwise. I'm genuinely surprised you insist on critiquing me and to such lengths too. I apologize for my reaction, sorry.

Moving onto your current critique, it's useful. The reason why I put the half bottom in shadow was because I thought the arms above would obscure what was below. I thought it made sense since the light source is placed directly above. Don't worry about the head, I drew that type in different angles without problems, trust me. I tried painting the shadows not black many months ago but it didn't work out. I'll try it again when I'm done with this mini series of costumes this drawing is part of.
Thank you for your patience

I've been drawing for two months straight -
every day spent drawing at least something -
and here's some stuff I drew for using as reference; I've been dedicating whole pages to different body parts (still need one for feet, but I keep crapping it up) so I have something to look at if I'm stuck.
Usually these references (and a lot of my sketches) come from shows or comics that I follow; I literally pause the show or zoom in on whatever body part I like the look of and try to draw it as accurately as I can. Sometimes I feel like I'm not learning how to draw 'the right way', though. People are telling me that a body is made up of circles, squares and triangles but I struggle to wrap my head around it; I look less at the shapes and more at the lines and what parts they form; does that make sense?
(also sorry for the image quality, I swear I'll get a better picture-taker)

if it's supposed to be comedic, maybe exaggerate some of the parts size and shape, like the glove and boots
the belt could have more personality, maybe scary/goofy engravings depending on what his backstory is
also something about the way the foot hits the ground looks off technically.

careful with the rendering part. that's where you want to be the most careful otherwise you'd end up pushing or pulling forms where they shouldn't be

I guess drawing would be the simple answer, but in truth there are way better artists on /ic/ than me so I'm not the best to give advice.

If it helps you I started researching and contacting ex FZD students, I started putting together all the information I could on their curriculum. There's not much as I've only started compiling about 2 days ago but I'm hoping to get every single brief and homework they give at FZD for each week and each term so I can do my own homemade version of FZD (ridiculous hours included). I'm gonna be doing online courses to fill in for the seminars they'd give to students that way I can still get feedback on my work as that's what's mostly important to improve.

Download this, have a look at the Mock FZD document, I still gotta re-upload the students FZD folder as I lost the link to the original a while back but until then the document will have to do (ignore my edits). Once I finish it all I'll post it to /ic/ it'll be the same fundamentals content and briefs as FZD just without the cost.

Yeah snakes have weird jaws I found out it's something called jaw disarticulation, I thought it was cool so I tried implementing. Though now looking at it it feels kinda generic because I've seen it been done. I might try implement a spring loaded spear jaw kinda like the goblin shark, that might be cool for the female.

the shadow on her neck is not nearly that dark.

her lower waterline (lower eyelashes) are not that dark.

her left eye is not flat.

the space where her lips meet is darker. the shadow under her armpit is not that dark. she has defining shadows around her lips that you didn't capture.

she doesn't have a shadow on her back.

1) It's amazing how much of a painting's value structure is defined by that early underpainting
2) Painting on canvases you stretched yourself means you have so much more versatility in your values, and makes it all the more apparent when your midtones are lackluster

this one was kind of pain in the ass , Its way easier to do a study of a photo than it is of master painting

Good idea, should probably include ref next time, but the goal is not copying the ref, but to understand how light works on the face, which is why i didnt include it.

Haha yeah I was so lazy to paint the ears, maybe I will paint them just for the hell of it, it is interesting how light illuminates through the ear since its so thin. As for the eyebrows, not sure what you meant by that, its the same person after all, maybe you mean paint it more hairy like?

thanks man! I do want to render the hair, but man i don't even know how to start with hair lol, its like a complete different ball game from painting skin.

dude those are awesome, loving the bottom left where you had thicker lines to balance the detail on fair right of his face.

honestly dont know what to crit on the other than try and hatch in direction of form instead of just one direction, you going to level up fast bro keep it up!
