Normally when i just attack with a brush then turn off the lines, all my shapes are all over the place since the lines already establish the shape's edge.

What exactly is it about Kim Jung Gi's art that makes it so much more appealing than other artist's? I look at his work and compare it to say, Michael Hampton, and even KJG's figures are more likeable.

This is a general trend I find, Korean/Japanese artists are a lot more aesthetically pleasing than their western counterparts with few exceptions. Am I just a pleb?! What am I not getting?

You're doing it right, I think. Everything can be break down into simpler forms (cube, cylinder, etc.) so the idea is, if you're able to draw those basic forms into perspective, you just have to refine them to draw the more complicated stuff. I drew this to explain the idea behind that: my man is crude and basically a wodden mannequin. Loomis, Reilly, etc. have more complicated and accurate models to follow, but the idea is exactly the same. You don't know what the arm should look like, so you draw a correct cylinder, now you know what the arm should look like.

The key to good shading is understanding how forms work in 3d.
scott robertson's book How to Render, it goes into detail about how light works and how that creates/affects shadows.

And if you don't have a solid understanding of perspective already, start with how to draw. there are copies of both in the art resource thread.

Is there a way to get at least some money with no\low skill in drawing? Pic related. Cannot into portraits and such real life\reference accurate copying. Hardly ever can get my shit together to even color\shade stuff. Very prone to drop whatever I do, somewhat infantile.

I don't want to draw commissioned porn, fursonas, pony OC aka fursona 1.1 and such creepy shit.

How do I go about setting up shop? How do I collect money? I suppose I'll need internet wallet of sorts? Is there a preference for one or I can roll with whatever? If I do commissions, should I accept payment partially or fully upfront or secure the money otherwise? I doubt I'll have a contract over a 5$ doodle or whatever, but what should I do if a person won't pay me at all?

Or should I instead of proposing people to buy my commissions seek out already existing demand?

Always contract, they're legally binding and can hold up in small claims court if you get stiffed on a somewhat large sum. Either pay upfront or have a staggered payment plan. If they refuse to make the initial payment within the timeframe you've given them via paypal invoice after you show them the sketch, then move on and sell that pose as an adoptable or YCH sale. I've seen ych.commishes.com used for those kinds of things.

If you're on DA and charging five dollars, you're on a good site for that. No one on dA ever really wants to pay more than a couple of bucks for something because it's mostly children on there spending "points". If you're going to use dApoints, charge 100pts=$1 b/c dA takes 20% when you export it to paypal. (You don't need a credit card for paypal, btw.) On dA, there's shit tons of cute girls/anime/commission groups. Join as many as you can and see which ones do not have a submission limit or need approval. Submit to at least 5 groups with several thousand members.
Comment on lots of people's artwork, even if it's shit, no matter the site. If you comment on a profile or artwork of someone that doesn't get a lot of comments, you're more likely to be followed by that person because they're more likely to check out your page. Cast a wide net and try to leave comments on art that is similar in subject to what you draw in the hopes they'll follow you. Just keep the conversation going and make friends with lots people.

If you're going to try instagram, you really have to draw things that are stylish and what's in style. Instagram mostly has normal teen girls on there, so while you can get a following if you draw pastel rainbows and cutesy stuff, I don't see a whole lot of money coming out of it.

If you can handle it, you can try to do a commission stream on either picarto or twitch and make sure you get them to pay up first with the invoice. If you're going to stream, have a nice/ semi complete picture up at all times to pull people.

Learning it in the beginning is a lot of work since if you care you might plot it all, but if you don't really care, you'll just constantly eyeball it until people call you out on it when it's wrong. Does anyone have the name of a Spanish illustrator, he made some great illustrations of knights, one where a handful of knights are walking to the left, down a sloped hill of low wheat during sun down. Another is a Knight on a horse that is holding up his Lance while looking into the picture. The last i remember him doing was a bunch of knights assemble on a little riverbed/ forest grove where a king is knighting or crowning some guy. He has one of those Spanish names with three words if i can remember.

If anyone can help it would be great, I lost my old reference/inspo folder when my old computer crashed ):

As a portfolio page, you're drowning the viewer in too much to look at, and pieces too small to really take in. It all feels claustrophobic, and the overall feeling is depressing, from the over-use of grey and dark colors. The layout is also awkward - it's all light pieces at the top, and dark, hard to see pieces at the bottom. You should highlight 6 pieces at most per page, and have enough room around the central focus of each piece so it has room to breathe. The overall feeling i get is you're not very confident of the work, so you're hiding it behind small sizes and flooding the page with too much information.
The quality of the art isn't bad - it would get you into art school. For a job...not gonna cut it, especially as half of it feels unfinished.
This feels like a typical portfolio of someone who's trying to appear as something, like a conceptual artist, but doesn't have any strong work in that field, so you're trying to act like you are. I don't really get a sense of what you're good at. Nothing here makes me think "Wow, that's really good" - mostly because I can barely see any of it.

is this school entry, or work entry? if it's school, this is fine, just have a shit ton of life drawings to supplement it.
if work:
do you have any paintings featuring a character close up? add em if you got em

monkey girl is nice but why is she on a stool? draw her sitting on top of an areoplane or a mech or something- there's not a lot of visual storytelling here except the blind girl in the desert canyon

tank girl drawing is nice, but for work portfolios, you need to be really clear about your drawings and what you are saying with them, so they know you can communicate. at the least, edit the contrast on those sketches with photoshop so they are more easy to see. same with sword dude, his lines could be darker

get refs for the poses. hand placement on staff in bottom pic is awk, but a few secs in photoshop with lasso tool would fix it.

Yes but instead of thinking of a floating objet you need to think of it as if it still were conected to te ground, except the lower part is invisible.

The red and green lines are the ones used in the video, but for floating objets you need more lines, I added them in blue so you can easily see them. The green shadow is the one that should be casted if the object was conected to te ground, and the blue one is the shadow that a floating objet should cast. Finally I circled in light blue the points to which you have to conect the new blue lines.

Hope this helps you anon.

Hello anon, question here.

When you are rendering something from imagination, "sophisticated", how do you know how to render it? I mean I know what is oclusion shadow, core shadow, terminator mid tone, cast shadow etc. thanks to How to render by Scott Robertson but apply to something sophisticated from imagination is hard. It is not like when you separate light and darks (drawing from real life). I can render from imagination but there is some inconsistency. It maybe a stupid question but anons... I'm not a genius.

You must have skipped a book or two then since you would have learned that everything is built out of shapes, sphere, cone, cylinder and cube. Since everything is built out of those shapes, you just render accordingly to where your light sources are if you have more than one.

pixiv, twitter; my growth on both has been about equal, there's always a group of people on twitter who follow for that stuff and the japanese ani-twitter is massive. Your ability to generate retweets however is more important than skill, so it's going to start slow no matter what; pixiv functions similarly with rankings if you are a newbie. Just be prepared to not understand most of your followers too, maybe. Pixiv's popularity relies on good tagging and eyecatching thumbnails so youd need a decent understanding of composition; then you could probably just flavor of the month stuff and get attention, if the tags are in japanese. Twitter is word of mouth mostly; only the art connoisseurs would hunt you down for your twitter and follow it.

Getting posted on a site like a booru is also good for popularity if you are okay with repost culture; having your work signed somewhere with an @ or name helps, I think.

I think some other sites exist like hentaihaven or something but I don't really dabble much in western audiences, though my few dedicated followers in the west were obtained through streaming or deviantart which i barely pay attention to.

of course, i could be all wrong, I only have like 250ish followers. I just noticed a small snowball effect in recent months and I've slowly gotten better and it's showing.

Unless you're coming into the market with a dynamic entry and really good art you'll probably be stuck with low followers for awhile; think of imaginative ways to self-advertise.

I have no pain in my wrist, elbow, or shoulder, or hands. Arthritis runs in my mom's side of the family, but I have no symptoms. If your hands hurt, especially if you've been working regularly less than 10 years, you're doing something wrong, or it's hereditary.

Granted, I didn't onsessibley force myself to draw for 18 hours a day on "fundies", worked with my arm appropriately, took breaks, and worked out most of those years, so I had strong wrists/arms/shoulders.

Drawing from the shoulder on an a4 piece of paper is fucking idiotic, and if drawbox is telling you to do it, they're fucking retarded and should be sued out of existence.

Your arm has many joints, and you use all of them in the appropriate setting. For instance, painting large areas on a vertical canvas, you'd work from the shoulder - but when you zoom in and work on details, you use what's called a Mahl stick and steady your hand on it, and paint from the wrist.
A4 paper, you should be doing work from the wrist and elbow. From the shoulder is no control in that small of a space. Could you link to where drawbox tells you this? I'd like to write them a pointed email about how fucking dumb they are, if it's true.

And I use my shoulder for as much as possible. I remember reading somewhere (maybe elsewhere on the FAQ) that the drawabox guy insists on certain things because of the habits they create, not because they're the be-all end-all. It's a method for teaching and learning, rather than the best way to draw.

I believe he mentioned something about drawing from the elbow increasing the likelihood you'd slip back to drawing from your wrist. Once you build up the right habits, then you can draw from wherever you feel is best for the marks you're going after.

I'm trying to make concept art for my game. I have basic drawing skills ( actually giving you an idea what the hell you are looking at ) with NO digital art skills. I just bought a cheap Wacom tablet and had a bit of trouble trying to get it to be detected in my Linux computer, and was a pain to get to even draw something in gimp. No idea how to get the two buttons on my Stylus pen to do something else besides the 'Move tool' and right click function.

Am I doing pic related right? Make super basic sketches of the supposed scene? Should I do objects separately? ( Barrels, scratches on the wall etc in a different window then just paste them and resize them to fit the scene ) Is that how you do it?

>> No.3156879

>>3156803
I'm not an expert or anything, but I would imagine concept art comes first then other steps depending on what game you're making.
Search up concept art and you'll find it's different from the game, as the game has limitations, and art does not.
On the topic of games themselves, start with a minimum viable product. The absolute barebones of the game itself (for super Mario it would be a 2d sprite that moves on a 2d plane. no enemies, pipes, scores, background, or textures)

I wouldn't say not to bother with art, as art is a very important step in game design. Setting realistic expectations is vital for a single-person developer. Yes.
However much you want, depends on time constraints, subject matter, etc.
You dont need textures. Depending on software, using simple materials will give you more to work with in paintover. 3ds max/keyshot/zbrush can render a variety of metals, materials.

Thanks! I have one more question:
Do you take the time to get a high res render, or do you kinda just take a screenshot of the render camera preview?

>> No.3157282

>>3157218

Again, depends on context and project. For instance, While designing the scene, I screen cap, find edge in photoshop and draw over, then update my model, rinse and repeat.

For the final paintover painting, it depends on time and the project. Low on time, simple model/blocky arrangement and lighting. Lots of time and Ill use more detailed models with materials defined and use ray-traced rendering. If I dont even have time to render but need detail, then blocking out, rendering with tech filter in 3ds max and doing lineart + flat color/shadow may be appropriate.

Again, it depends on project, time and style, so pre-planning helps answer these questions. Some good artists to study from for 3d-2d are Dorje Bellbrook, Sung Choi, Eytan Zana, Ken Fairclough and Paul Chadeisson.

Is it worth it to buy a tablet if I'm still a shit artist? I've just been drawing shit with a pencil in my dollar store sketchbook, but I really would like to learn to colour stuff and make it all pretty. I'm just curious, how long were you guys drawing for before you got a tablet?

You clean the edges on the painting after turning the lines off.

I'm somewhat confident in my figure drawing from reference but not at all from imagination, what should I be doing when I study to fix that?

Just gotten Krita. This is much more pleasant to use. Also yes on the art, it's going to contain a lot of it similar to a visual novel. The actual game play aspect of it will be pixelated and a mix of side-scrolling and perhaps point-and-click style, haven't really decided yet.

I do have a friend who's helping me on the art and he's way better than me but it would help immensely if I'm also on par on his level. My plan would be making tons of concept art on the world/universe that my characters live in. The actual game of course, would be much, much simpler and some of the stuff you will see would just be glimpses in the distance. Then put all of those stuff in a big place somewhere like a website. ( websites are actually cheaper than I thought. ) Where interested people can see a much more in-depth explanation.

Obviously I gotta put a big warning sign that the actual game itself is different and that this is just simply to show people the world itself. As implementing such material is beyond my-- and my friend's reach. Don't wanna disappoint people too badly.

Also on the topic of the pixel art game itself, how hard is pixel art exactly?

Pixel art is just digital painting at small resolutions

Well, I guess there really wasn't anything generally different about it. Besides 'git gud' of course.

Krita is missing the tool bar icons. Anybody know a fix?

looks like a clumsy solution. is there really nothing for photoshop. does krita or similar have this feature?

I have no idea how to update my Krita to 3.0 and beyond. I want to use the animation tool. However doing

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kritalime/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install krita

only gives me the 2.8.5 version for some reason. What am I doing wrong? Did I by accident add an older repository or something? If so, how do I remove it?

Anyone happen to know the artist I'm thinking of? I used to watch his timelapse videos on youtube, but since I don't really use bookmarks I've forgotten the name and it really bothers me. Some things I remember are
>he used to link to a separate video for bgm, I remember Savant being one of the artists
>he often drew girls, some that I remember being a sniper/soldier and a blond girl laying on her back in red sheets
>one video was him doodling several dozen different heads / expressions

I used to use GIMP, I'm so used to it.

Which ones are the best though? Other than photoshop?

With krita I'm kinda uncomfy, because once i turn the opacity to like 40 percent it just smudges and doesnt even does anything ,no colour, only smudge.

i'm not sure there would be much... i knew a games pro who bought autodesk sketchbook solely to use its locked perspective tool then would paste what he drew into photoshop to paint over.

boxes in perspective
then colour
you could do 80% of it with the fill tool and accurate lines. the rest you'll need is rendering skill which will be the last 20% of the drawing and 70% of the time learning.
