IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

The reference is still more blue. Also, that island that's roughly in the center of the image is not flat enough, it's throwing the whole thing off. I suggest adding in the clouds as well, because you need to have the complete image before you start refining. When you look at the reference photo, you gauge the terrain in relation to the sky, and it affects how you perceive the terrain. It will never 'look' right in your image because you're missing the sky.

you should use only hard edges while you're learning. soft edges are a bit too easy, you can be wrong and still have something that looks fine, whereas with hard edges you have to be right or it'll look bad, they also teach you a few lessons soft edges don't because of the lack of contrast.

you can always fiddle with the edges after you've done the painting of course, if you want it to look nice a smooth for a blog or something.

i'd also avoid covering up the contour of the face with hair, the cheekbones are one of those hard forms you should endeavour to learn early on.

and don't take my advice as gospel, i'm sure plenty of people get away with doing the opposite, but for me i think it's only logical that working in a way that makes your mistakes more apparent means you will notice them and learn more quickly.

good job overall, especially the lips.

Looking better.

Head is the main flaw imo. My suggestion: copy 10 loomis heads (books in q&a thread linked) really carefully. And then draw 10 of loomis style heads from imagination (not rushed, patiently) - when they're each done correct them by looking at original loomis material. Also pay attention to the hairline.

I bet it will make your heads way better, even if they're drawn with zero reference.

I don't understand what the problem is. You're refining the image over time, getting it closer to the reference.

Why are you painting this reference? Why did you choose it? Generally, when I choose a reference for a landscape, it's because .I find something interesting in it, or something about it is particularly challenging from an artistic point of view. What is your reason for painting it? If you don't have a good reason, stop painting it, and find references with something in it that draws your eye, that you feel the urge to show other people, like "hey, check this out, isn't it cool/interesting/beautiful?"
You just don't paint stuff at random. Have a reason. I wouldn't choose that image for the sky, alone. The lack of sunlight has flattened the colors, color composition-wise it's boring and lifeless, and washed out the water. What's the focus here? Why are people supposed to be looking at this? Even as a photo, I have issues with this shot.
Personally, I find painting from life to be the best for landscapes. Start scouting out places around you, look at it in different kinds of light (Morning, noon, dusk), take some reference pictures of that light, some detail pictures if necessary, and then do some pleine air sketches to capture the colors and basic shapes, to use as reference in the studio.
I just get the feeling you have no connection to this photo, and that's why you're struggling. Pick something that interests you, even if it's just cool shadows some trees are casting.

The lip glint looks too realistic. It's a lot more detailed than the rest of the character. Be more sparing with the shine and try not to draw every lip wrinkle unless you are gonna bring the rest of the character more realistically detailed too. Otherwise it sorta makes you look like you have a subconscious vore fetish. The rendering looks alright and the style isn't bad. Not my cup of tea but I can see where you're trying to go with it. If this is a style you want to move towards, maybe try doing some studies from Justice League or Aeon Flux. Not to copy their style but to guide you into the art style you're trying to develop.

Hey, thanks a whole bunch for this, I think you're the anon who commented on my last (much more rushed) painting (the snow landscape). I just wanted to let you know that I love and try to soak in as much of your advice as I can, and that's what prompted me to get into more detail with this piece (I was getting frustrated and antsy to just make a nice landscape painting, before I started detailing this and realized I can have the patience to draw tiny bits of grass and rock).
You told me last time to find what appeals to me - with this picture, it is probably the icy, Nordic feeling I get and the potential for a story (I've just been watching Star Wars a lot and this looks like an area where machinery may have been). But yeah, I will probably choose something more appealing next time.
I hope to use your advice alongside this current environment painting course i'm watching to really get into it. Painting the details in this painting yesterday really opened my eyes to how much time, patience and attention to detail landscape painting requires, even if you told me last time about how long it takes (and that you love doing the little details - I'm starting to get it now).

Interesting that you talk about Pleine Air painting - i've been really getting into James Gurney lately, having read most of his book on colour & light and fantasy creatures, and been going through a bunch of his youtube videos - to be honest, I think his paintings are what sparked my sudden interest in painting landscapes and studying light & colour (or at least developing those undeveloped skills of mine). Pleine Air painting looks really tasty when he does it - but that would require I buy a bunch of things and start learning gouache wouldn't it? (Or at least I would want to learn gouache because he does it so nice).
Thanks again for helping me.

it will be cool to see you improve.

- hips too small. Looks barely wider than his neck. Wrap your hands around your neck and hips to internalize the difference.
- his skull slopes down way too quick, same in your sketch. The top of a head is relatively even/flat!
- His nose goes down perfectly vertical. That's not how noses work :^)

Pretty neat.

I think you could increase her appeal a lot with some changes. I shamelessly went ahead and adjusted her.

From top to bottom
>changes to hair (bangs start closer to forehead, bangs not as wide)
>changes to face (bigger/lowered eyes, face not as long, smaller nose)
>ribcage smaller and higher up
>thin waist
>rounded hips
>longer legs

Part of it is taste, you don't necessarily have to go with the face I did. You could probably give her a less pointy chin, more defined nose and smaller/thinner eyes if you wanted to. I just went with a conventional anime qt face since that's got broad appeal, I guess.
