>> No.3132598

imo yes, knowing your fundamentals of perspective, color theory and anatomy are very important in pixel art seeing as you need to convey most information via simple color shapes and transitions between colors there a few stray pixels can make your character look off. That said, it's a much more forgiving medium since most artwork is stylized and abstracted to begin with and its very easy to correct

So I just found a interest in pixel art. I like to preplan everything I draw. Is grid paper a good place to start at?

Unless you're doing a thumbnail sketch there's no real point to making what is essentially black on white pixel art on a piece of paper. Really if you want to plan out the values on a piece first I suggest just making your value sketch on a pixel art program to start with and refine it as you go along.

The only reason I ask is while watching tutorials I just people go into it. But each one, I assume since they are making tutorials, already have an eye for the form. I am not too proud to say that I don't.

I understand I would need to differentiate colors so I was going to use color as well as grid paper. Just seemed like it would make it easier to get used to the forms.

Pic related is my first pixel art, I read the Pixeljoint beginner post in the OP, so I tried to make a simple little image based on those "to do" and "to avoid"
However I don't understand how AA works. I mean if it's just a single black line on an empty space then you add more pixels of varying degrees of black to "soften" it, but how do I do that when the outline is black and the inside is colored?

the line work is mostly fine, but I would say use darker values to communicate the forms better, and maybe try to eliminate the bulk of the outline using sel-out. you got a few jaggy lines here and there which need to be cleaned up/AAed out. lastly the lines on the lower arm looks a little too sharp, try to make the line curve a bit.
still, this is a really good piece, I hope my critique was helpful, and also muh dick.

honestly, you're better off going to a community dedicated to pixel art, like pixelation or pixel joint forums. you'll generally get quick and useful critique/advice from very good pixel artists there. This thread is fairly slow, and I see too many posts that go by without any critique. I would advise against /agdg/ since, like you said, it's too many facets of game design cramped into one thread so it just speeds on through trampling over any form of feedback.
