Oh - then I'd agree with that. In my experience, I've found social media to be vastly overrated in terms of contributing to growing a freelance career. It's still important and can be very useful, but not nearly as much as simply perfecting a portfolio and pitching it to art directors, editors, etc.

I'm proud of this piece because it was one of the most difficult out of the choices I was given to study. I didn't know if I could do it, I'd never done anything on that scale before (size and detail wise) My tutor was apprehensive yet let me go about it to see what happened. What came of it was something better than what the both of us expected.

I didn't know the stairs were a study of another artwork. It does change things a bit as I thought you came up with that composition yourself. Regardless, it's very well done, and you should try and pull things that are working well in your painting, and try and apply it to your other work. For example, the colors are really great, but the textures created by the details are what really sells it. Keep in mind what varying levels of detail (from no detail to lots of detail) can do for you and your compositions. From your sketches, it already looks like this is something you're doing.

Generally speaking, most of your sketches are coming across as quick thumbnail sketches for a more polished piece you're about to dive into, but you never do. Thumbnails are supposed to be sloppy and messy, but to have your blog centered around these sketches just communicates to viewers that you can't spend more than a few minutes on a drawing. Overall it just seems like a dumping ground for someones rushed sketches, so there's not a whole lot to connect to.

I think one of the issues that is hurting your sketches is your mark making. You can tell that it's very rushed and fast, and that doesn't really look great when working with pen. If you wanted to continue doing more sketches like this, consider just slowing down and taking your time more.

Currently my insta/tumblr is mostly a daily sketch (irl because drawing from life is the best) good or bad and a shotgun approach to get some followers/attention while I'm still learning. It also lets me know what appeals to the general public.

Most of my life. I got really into it for about 2 years in middle school because there was an absolute art god going there who blew anything I'd seen up to that point out of the water. robert e. howard for example prefered short stories over novels and only succeeded in writing 1 conan novel, which he worked hard for. another contemporary writer would be ted chiang.

I'm going to stop reviewing people's pages. This got way more derailed than I had intended, and the thread has turned into a mess, which sucks because these are my favorite threads on /ic/. It's totally my fault for derailing this, so I hope people will just get back to sharing their blogs.

A few different thoughts below after reading everything:

- These were only meant to be quick first impressions about how your page & work came across. It's not meant to be taken so seriously. I just thought it'd be helpful for people to get some simple feedback on
how their work may come across, good or bad. Some person pointed out how I was harsher on more developed artists, and more lenient and encouraging to more amateurs. They're totally right - we can't all be held to the same standards.

- The biggest issue I saw across everyones site (I looked through them all) was that people seem to never make finished work. I highly, highly encourage people to try making more finished work. Pumping out nothing but half-assed sketches and incomplete WIPs does less for you than if you were to just go ahead and bring things to completion. Forget the paranoia of "polishing a turd" - being able to finish work is an important part of being a good artist. People have different definitions of what 'finished' means, but you're never going to find what it means to you if you don't try on a regular basis.

- I'm not going to post my work, and I think the need to post it is up for debate in this context. This is an anonymous critique board, and I was giving anonymous critiques. To be honest, I don't have any work worth sharing that couldn't be reverse image searched to my own website or social media pages, which won't work as I wish to remain anonymous. Take the comments as is - you don't have to pay attention to them.

I can understand that. I had been wanting to create particular images but knew I wasn't in a position to actually create what I wanted. So I started drawing the subject matter that would enable me to do that project. When I become proficient enough (or comfortable enough) to start it I'll be able to make finished works.

Heck, I was drawing another subject matter (that is being shunned, not that I blame people) in the hopes of acquiring skills (and specifically muscle memory) to pursue other projects.

Now I'm not condoning that people here should just get caught up in the perpetual cycle of studies, practice, or concepts without completing a singular piece. However on some level people here are far from completing project that are even half the required skills to their ambitions.

Ultimately people should be working towards practicing to completing a project. Even if it is taking a study, practice, or concept and making a finished piece of it. Which would help develop some skills they are not practicing otherwise.

You can't be laying housing foundations forever. You gotta start putting up floors, walls, staircases, ceilings, doors and windows onto that foundation. Instead of just making the same unfinished (and unfurnished) basement.

how do you find art directors, editors, etc?

Once you find a business or organization you want to pitch to, you either:
a) Go on their website and find their contact info under the "About Us", "Who We Are", "Staff", etc. pages
b) Reach out to their generic contact email and ask for the art directors contact info.
c) Search in their FAQs. Sometimes they can have specific instructions for how to best reach out to them.
d) Do some more in-depth detective work. For example, maybe you can't find the ADs specific email, but you know their name. You then can also find the email of someone else who works there. For example: you find a John Smith and his email is j_smith@business.com. You can tell from this what their email naming convention is (Firstinitial_Lastname@business.com). You can then guess the email of anyone working there.

Your jump in values are too rough, need to smooth them up a bit. Proportions, especially faces are off. Learn Loomis, seriously it helps. If you're drawing from life look up how to measure proportions correctly using your pencil or grids.
Learn about line weight, otherwise your line drawings are going to look flat. Also, lines are too scratchy.

Not the guy you were responding to, but still: This is a common misconception. A successful social media following (or even art career) is just as much about your marketing and self promotion than it is your artwork. Making cool work by itself will get you absolutely nowhere.
