What are things to avoid when drawing fanart?
What is the optimal fanart like?
Must fanart add something new?
Can fanart be art?

step 1: never do fan art.

1) Tracing, claiming it as your own thing, making money with it, doing NSFW of it or anything that "could harm the franchise" (Nintendo, for instance, doesn't like that).
2) & 3) Fanart that brings something new without massacring the original franchise.
4) Yes, it already is...

You can, as long as you're not 100% relying on it. An artist is supposed to be a creative person, after all... (the best to do is 50/50 : 50% fanart for exposure & get yourself noticed, 50% your own stuff. As you get more & more known, do less fanart & more of your own stuff.)

fanart should give you something more than just the character
you could
>make them do something (that you don't see them doing in whatever they're from, or at least portray it in a different way)
>make a redesign (i.e "what if *favorite game of thrones character* lived in the modern era?)
>draw it in a vastly different art style (though "realistic super mario" has worn out it's welcome)

here's an example of 2 and 3, with the cookie clicker grandma drawn in the JJBA style, and the cookie redesigned as a stand

if you just draw the character it's fucking boring

technical skill lacking but the ideas are awesome and the design is alright

I don't think so.

The composition of the illustration and the artist style can bring freshness to known characters without redesigning them or being too much creative on the settings.

But perhaps we agree and you're just being mildly exaggerated.

Fanart is fine if you're doing some cool tribute to it. A lot of official companies do art galleries where artists do tributes.

Like Sanrio having a Hello Kitty art show. A lot of famous artists and illustrators, like Simone Legmo, Tara McPherson, Ron English, etc did pieces based on Hello Kitty.

>> No.3094508

Disney features a gallery called Wonderground, where artists do tributes of Disney properties. Their work is printed on postcards, shirts, books, etc.

Or if you have the ability to draw a character on model, like drawing My Little Pony, you could work for Hasbro to illustrate packaging and promo art.

These are the only times fanart is acceptable.

Drawing comic stuff like Batman or The Hulk is fine too if you want to work for DC or Marvel.

Tyson Hesse, the guy who drew that comic Sonic's Big Fat Adventure, used that to get him a job drawing Sonic for Archie comics.

You should avoid drawing bulky clothes when drawing fan art. Try adding really huge boobies.
