IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I never really learned how to draw, like reading drawing books or watching tutorials, I just kind of picked it up along the way when I was trying to pass time. This worked fine for me since drawing was only a hobby and I would draw once in blue moon.
But now I want to get a bit more serious and actually hone my skill.
Please give me some critique and tell me where I should start. Thanks in advance.

Drawing from life has more control/variables. You can change position just by moving, you can adjust the lighting, and you get infinitely more detail. Some of the more subtle things, like light on skin aren't translated to film/digital, either. You also get the whole figure, were a lot of times, you're only getting part of the figure. You can also, in some situations, have the model alter the pose to be more pleasing, or into a better pose. Also, most reference people use here is photography, which has different standards/goals in terms of lighting and contrasts, which makes it hard to see the form.

probably cause just grinding lines and boxes like a retard for months can be excruciatingly boring and it doesn't teach you to draw what you see, which personally I believe to be the most basic and fundamental skill of any artist

it's good but shouldn't be the only thing for a beginner.. if I had done only that the past few months I wouldn't be able to do ANY sort of figure or face or study or drawing from imagination, I'd just know how to do boxes, which I also know now..

The author is not very skilled himself, and there are some pretty bad examples there, especially with ellipses. The illustration to the first lesson used to be wrong, but I checked now, it's been changed, now it looks better. There also was a very bad drawing of a camera in "everyday objects", now it's been changed for a barrel, which, I must admit, gets the perspective quite right. Circles in perspective can be a very difficult thing to draw 100% correctly, and frankly, it's not that important, but still. And there's still this ridiculous tank there.

eh, I'm a beginner, I was talking from taste, not expertise

the biggest difference I see between that and yours, is that California Crisis looks like very clean line art with very specific different tones of shades, like a black, grey and white comic book, while you don't filly use line art, you just kinda sketch it with pencil and then add a couple of ink lines on top..

maybe take the line-art approach.. sketch.. erase all pencil marks to the point where they are almost invisible.. ink the lines, then with charcoal maybe add the shadows, you're not gonna achieve those greys with pencil alone, it's gonna look scratchy, unless you spend hours blending it, but that's just a waste of time

another option is to get like 2-3 grey markers.. it's what the pic you posted looks like really

What pisses me off is that I have done better drawings like a month+ ago and I've been at this for like 5 months.

Mostly the shading turns to shit if I don't spend hours and hours blending, while I see various begs here who can just simplify the shadows with some scratches and they look fine.. it frustrates me that the only shading I am capable of is smudging and blending for long periods of time. This drawing I actually wanted to cross-hatch, but it turned out so bad I just put shade over it and it became too messy to be able to smudge and fix, it's why it pissed me off so much, the initial drawing looked okay, also the face infuriates me. But thanks for your words I'll keep trying.

>> No.3091411

Before you move on from your initial sketch/construction try putting in really light lines around the areas with the most light and shadow. I don't remember what its called but putting indicators like that will help with the placement of the darkest values which will when you move past your sketch you already have some kind of idea how you want to shade it.

The people that frustrate don't just immediately slap down values that end up looking right, they spend the time looking at the figure and understanding the values before they put them down.

Also quit working with a white background. look at some loomis figure drawings

This wouldn't sound so mystic if you took a minute to actually read it. If he tells you how his mannikins work then draw them yourself, if he tells you about how to use a plane to foreshorten a figure then attempt to do it yourself, if he tells you to draw your own figures then draw your own figures, come on guys, there's no secret to it

I always notice a lot of people in beginner threads tend to draw directly from observation; "studies" they're usually called here.

I would avoid that as a beginner, there's a way to use references but its not by direct observational drawing when you have very little knowledge. In the beginning they take a long time and more often then not we simply draw what we see in a flat way without having to think of space or form. It wont make you truly any better except at copying whats in front of you. That's why so many "trained" artists and teachers can only draw observationally and not at all from imagination. They only know how to copy what's in front of them. You would think looking at something alot would let you draw it better but infact you might be shocked at how little that helps. Consider that we've been looking at our hands in front of our faces our entire lives yet hands are among the hardest things to draw. Only by breaking it down to simple forms do people really learn to draw hands.

Instead you need to learn how to intuitively "feel" the forms in space. learn to draw basic forms from any angle. If your into the figure then learn basic proportions and then construct little figures with basic forms like circles, squares or even sticks. Never do it perfectly from the front or side since that'll flatten it and try instead to have then standing in space, make it look like its standing in 3d.

You'll learn to "see in 3d" and you'll start to intuitively feel the forms going through that space. Once you get a good feel for doing this you can start learning anatomy from someone who breaks it down into basic forms like vilppu and only when your deep into anatomy should you be using photographs or direct reference, mostly to double check your work and confirm your drawings are making sense, not for copying.

I've completely hated "studies" in the way you're describing them here and its the reason why I've given up art so much in the past. for the past two months or so I've been going for an approach more like what you're talking about here and have been feeling like I'm finally making some progress on figure drawings which I'm happy about. The problem is, I have an incredible amount of trouble applying any of this logic when drawing faces; they look just as fucked as they did on day 1 for me. Any tips?

Honestly, faces are just really tough.

Inventing faces from imagination is a really good test of how good you truly are at seeing and solving problems in 3d. You have to imagine squareness, forms turning away, depressions in the face, the wrapping of the eyelids together in a way that makes sense, having to imagine features sloping while still lining up, etc etc. Not to mention we're so good at identifying faces that even slight variation of proportions can turn everything to derpyface.

Avoid doing the face from the front when your practicing, it doesn't take any spacial thinking. and don't get discouraged if you're not internalizing any of the anatomy. Your meant to keep going back to it, no one gets it all in even a few goes.

I recently saw a video on drawing faces from various angles by the youtuber sinix. His method was simple and seemed like a really clever way to wrap your head around it, i'd give that a look.

He largely draws from observation and the kangaroo thing was him trying to draw from imagination mindlessly with no reference. He just cant do it.

His videos are very helpful though. Honestly almost all of it is just repackaged vilppu but the visuals in his videos can be extremely helpful and vilppus videos can be long and dry. If you dont mind his extremely annoying jokes and demeanor, he's a great resource.

People just say shit arbitrarily on here sometimes. Just draw whatever size you want.

Drawing smaller has the advantage of getting a whole read of whatever your drawing at a glance. When you draw larger it can be easier to get lost in specific parts of it and fuck up proportions or have something going in a difference perspective or something.

Be very critical of when people tell you to do shit on here, alot of advice is bad or pointless and you can learn bad habits just as easily as good ones so only do something if it agrees with your common sense and your goals in art.

Then they're not bad at all.

I'd try for more poses with spread legs so you have to imagine them standing on a plane more, those are good practice and be wary of how much you exaggerate the spinal curve. Its ok to exaggerate it in gesture, good even, but just keep in mind when it goes too far. The spine isn't nearly as flexible as people think and its a common beginner mistake to exaggerate that too much in finished drawings.

Not only is it curved, it has no semblance of 3d whatsoever. That deltoid, are you kidding me? It just wraps around the whole freaking arm, lol. I won't even say anything about the chest, let's assume it's like that because of the rib cage, although, honestly, there's much more there. The second one, you already fucking got a critique on that pelvis, what the fuck do you even want now? You want me to write something about that mess of lines that you call an arm, that's shorter than the torso? At this point I suggest you practice observation first. If you can draw from observation you can move on to construction. It's not impossible to jump right in but it will be torturous.

i see no glaring issues in the proportions. the little mistakes you will polish over time, thats just petty shit. but you must understand that theres nothing else TO critique but the proportions, and as an artist, you might not want to leave it at that. drive it further. dont feel guilty just because its a photostudy.
