This for sure. The way you're framing her doesn't really say anything. What does she mean to the story? Is she really the "prize"? Is she willing? Or perhaps there's something more sinister going on? Also the two young men seem pretty non-descript. If these three are your main characters, introducing them properly should be pivotal.

>>3077480
ok so it's very difficult to get it exact considering angle and pose and all, and I'm simplifying a LOT but this might help you think about construction and basic proportions, worry about surface anatomy later

The circumference of the top half of the skull makes a cranial unit (red circle), it's extremely important that you think of this as a sphere in 3D. If it was a flat frontal view, the bottom of each circle would touch the top of the next. So I'm roughly estimating where they would connect in this space. The important and useful thing about these spheres is that they don't foreshorten, so we can still connect important landmarks without crazy perspective gymnastics. The circumference of these units also dictates the width of your figure, roughly two CU, slightly wider at the shoulders. Females are virtually the same except the width of the pelvis and the outer edge of the femoral head switch places.

I've also emphasized thinking about the space in this piece as your figures sorta flatten into 2D by the upper half, which is what gives the stretched elongated look

You can probably foreshorten it even more without any problems but try to get the basic measurements right before you build a crazy pose

That means 11,5 CU from skull to heel, 5,5 down to the femoral head and the remaining 6 down to the heel

Very handy and accurate in all situations and angles unlike Loomis-style heads. Feel free to ask if something doesn't make sense

not much to critique there. couple simplified faces and bodies conspicuously missing their hands and feet. i believe you tried to add some environment to them there, which is good, but try to avoid vignetting and letting things trail off if you want to improve your overall composition. in general i'd advise against inking and coloring an unfinished sketch.

Thank you! Very thorough! I always wondered about using cranial units vs. the entire skull, jaw and all.

But don't get me wrong, I'm very much about the elongated torso. I'm kinda obsessed with angels, namely the unpleasant biblical descriptions as well as the inhumanly long and graceful Mannerism variety. So I invent my own, symbolic or otherwise, usually with too much of something and/or a fucked up head.

in addition to layering your sketches, as you've done here, every other page or so you can section off a panel and create a finished composition, sort of like a page within a page, then have your assorted sketches around that. it can look neat.

Actually I think the idea is that the monster represents yourself, as most men see themselves as monster. You could also argue the monster is supposed to represent your desire to fuck the girl. Or simply to show contrast between something sexy, fragil etc and something ugly beastly, monstruous. There's a lot going on in that trope really, that's why a lot of people do it.

how do you not know what overdesigning/overengineering is? have you just never heard the term? it means making things more complicated than they have to be, a quality that is rampant in concept and illustration work, and would be a detriment to a team of people trying to make any product.

If you want to make a career at commercial art you need to learn how to make functional designs. All that flashy style isn't going to land you a job anywhere, unless you just want to be a freelance sakimichan type person who makes whatever they want no matter how pointlessly stylistic. But that's not a career path, that's a dream, and if it were going to happen for you it'd have happened by now.

If your dream is to make good products (and for a lot of you who "make it" you end up working on shit products but everyone says you "made it" because you got any job at all) you need to learn to be precise and efficient with your designs. A naked woman and an overdesigned monster won't get you hired by any studio with clout.

But the guy also said "I make art for fun" so whatever, he's not worth responding to anymore.

This is easily my favorite in this thread. The pose and proportions are a bit out of wack (short arms, narrow shoulders, his whole lower half seems offset to the left), but you've nailed the mood seemingly effortlessly. The lighting and colors are spot on, particularly the vibrant interplay between green, grey and brown on the shield. Whoever said the highlights are too grey needs to off himself, I want to throw up every time I see exaggerated highlighting and dodging. Keep doing what you do

Thankya.

The reason the proportions are off is partially because the model is female. I know it's hard to tell, because the chest and hips are pretty obscured by the shield.

I'm glad the color harmony works for you. To be honest, I wasn't sure if it worked or not. I worked from greyscale, and then added a color layer over it. Kinda sloppy. Also, the values aren't quite as crisp on here as they are for me in Photoshop. Must be the color space I'm using.

Either way, thank you for the feedback!

well, it's not bad if you're a beginner, but you're not making use of your digital toolset enough
the background is just a bunch of gradients, you don't have to paint it
the sculpture's shape is clearly defined, but you're not using any masks to help it
Your values are quite muddy, if you want to make them cleaner you gotta lay them down in groups - first an overarching light fade from top to bottom, then the core shadows, then the reflected light and occlusion shadows
You did distort the proportions quite a lot, I can recommend you, again, to make use of your digital media and put your ref picture on top yours to see the mistakes, you can also make it b&w to see the values more clearly(even though it's kind of a crutch)

Work on your values. You have too much black(or darkest value) on the apple. Think about the plane facing direction, and how that affects the values. Second, think about the material surface you're painting. Is it rough, or smooth? Or somewhere in between? Right now it looks really shiny and rather metallic.

Try to convey more with less values, and only add darker values where it's necessary. Don't just make it dark for no reason.

Also, work on the overall shape design. You're half-assing the shape design because it's a simple object, and it shows. Look for the underlying appeal in every mundane shape. That's how you make uninteresting things interesting.

That said, it's not bad. Keep practicing and you'll get there!

i dont want to shit on you because i understand how hard actual painting is. but you may want to consider your palette more carefully, like the physical palette, things like which colors you have available and being sure to mix the actual exact color that you want.

unlike digital painting, in real painting picking colors is more than half the battle, and being organized in this one way makes everything else much much easier, and allows for greater freedom and artistry on the canvas.

in fact i would say that if you posted a picture of your palette for critique it'd actually be more helpful than posting the picture

The biggest problem i see is the composition. You have a high contrast point with the vending machines and their brightness surrounded by a dark setting and the girl directly opposite of it. The eye is forced to look on either side of the painting, unsure of which is the true focal point. Kind of taxing on the eye.
What also doesn't help too much is the fact that she's right on the edge of the frame. Figure out the the focal point you want. If it's her, make her sit in the middle of the frame, meaning to expand the right of the canvas.

I disagree. First of all, the average audience looks at a piece like this for all of five seconds. The composition sells the scene and the mood. Little girl up late at night sequestered away in some vacant part of a hotel or similar venue. We want her to occupy very little space in a corner, we want the negative space to dominate. We are not focused on her, we are focused on the distance and the disconnect.

Wondering what you lads think of this character design.

The idea is that she can manifest limbs from under her garb, right now I'm just thinking arms and legs but maybe animal limbs too. So she needs to be wearing long draping clothes like shawls and dresses etc and maybe the dress can be tied up around the waist. she has long thick hair that grows all the way down her neck and down her spine giving her a sort of hunchback profile all though I didn't show it well here.

Any thoughs on which design is best? Are they all shit? Is this character shit? I left a blank in case anyone wants to take a stab at it.

I'd tighten the eyes a bit and give him a bigger smile, maybe snarky considering his pal there is holding a knife. The staff is at a decent angle but like the other anon suggested, needs a 3d element like shading and probably fix the back piece showing from behind him. Take a straight edge to it and draw it out longer if it's a staff instead of a wand. I like his overall design, feels FF-ish so you're in the right direction. Also suggest redrawing it because of those erase lines, you're sketching too hard. Good job, so far, though. Please post any revisions.

Best solution, if you can afford it, is map cases, or flat files, like this:
I've seen cardboard flat files, for a cheaper solution. I have several flight cases from a company I worked for, we used them to ship posters to trade shows, and we upgraded, so I grabbed a couple. I used to have an old 12 drawer flat file I got cheap from a retired draftsperson, but I had to get rid of it when I moved, it was too fucking big and heavy. I miss having it, it was great for storing art and supplies.

The torso/legs looks really flat and lacks form depth in comparison to the arms. Think about plane changes. If you drew a side-view of the character and outlined the contour of their back, it wouldn't be as round and uninteresting as your shading suggests.

But mostly, it's just uninteresting in general and it looks unfinished. So do more work on it and post results. The arms are definitely the strongest aspect of this piece, imo.
