why are there so many bucket crabs on /ic/ intent on bringing others down? why can't this community be supportive of one another?

does anonymity and art not mix well?

Maybe because it's anonymous? There's a reason why "post your work" is a standardized response to these very negative people.

Normies, Anon.
This is one thing that /r9k/ got right. The Normies. They infest everything and this is why we can't have nice things.
Think about it, if there were half as many people tomorrow on /ic/, but they were all serious about art and gifted by God with a functionning brain... no more daily thread asking where to find Discord or why Genzoman a shit. This place would be a paradise for artists. It will not happen. I currently have 70 Hidden threads.
Normies.

If say Mike Mignola started drawing right now in his 50s for the first time ever, he would surpass someone like you in 2 months tops. It's all about talent / aptitude and hard work, kiddo. You will never have what it takes to be great even if you started drawing in your mom's womb.

He is referring to doodling as a kid, what literally every child in a developed nation did. So I guess by your definition, we all have been drawing all our lifes. If you had actually watched that interview you'd know he is talking about being an alcoholic who started taking art seriously in his late 20s.

I agree and disagree with you. If this place was a fap fest then it would just be another DA and everyone would stagnate or be flat out lied on how "good" their work is. Or there would be a lot of inexperienced kids that never drew calling shit "stupid" and declaring it as criticism without really pointing out the flaws. Do i agree with it, fuck no, but its the internet.

are you confusing lack of asspats with hostility or something? There's a lot of great advice esp. for beginners thrown around if you're willing to actually google the books/videos/etc people tell you to read and study and shieet. What more do you want? It's a fucking hobbyist board on a mongolian basket weaving forum, not your personal art teacher.

Early on it was much smaller with about half as many boards, and the demographic was much younger. There wasn't much to do on the internet for normies, so it was mostly teens, nerds, and businessmen. There were much less rules, and it was pretty lawless with the kind of content that got posted. Spamming and thread killing was common and often went unpunished as the staff was tiny.

I can't say it got better or worse, the place just became much more normie friendly now. On one hand, you're much less free to act and say what you want, on the other subcommunities like /ic/ can flourish since the people conducive to building a learning environment would never have come here in the previous lawless state.

No. Too much of this forum is taken up by shitposters and trolls, half the threads are the same "how do git gud at drawing porn" posts, and there's way too many people with no skill or talent who have reduced art to a grim, sterile process of repetition, as punishment for others, so they feel good about their failure.
Any attempt to actually teach is met with bullies, neckbearding, and just the usual garbage that 4chan is known for.

It could have something to do with the conversation-shaping role of 'transaesthetics', where there are no more baseline artistic standards but every piece, or individual, is viewed through the same few lenses.

Basically I'm saying that the loss of the Western cultural etiquette and standards of politeness made contemporary art possible. Modern Art might be the stimulus to a certain behaviour pattern; the same argument some people have made about rock music. We should try changing the ad banners on /ic/ for the next three months to something more tasteful... even something like that could influence behaviour.
