They take the time and care needed to properly render out what they intend to show. Most folks I see here trying to emulate this look just shit all over the canvas and never bother to go in and refine forms.

Learn your fundies and collect your references. Take your time.

Is it just me or is his chin, or his nose, off perspective? I saw it really early in the sketch but he never did anything about it. It just looks weird especially when looking at the mouth going around the face.

However what got me the most was that, even just a few minutes into the block in phase, he's able to get a sense of the form almost instantly. The values and color arrangements just work so well so early and it makes even the block in look amazing.

China is a hypercompetitive society where you either work like a madman or die in poverty, and there's nothing to do outside of working because the chinese only socialise for networking purposes and have no concept of leisure.

Can ic just admit that this guy is an advanced digital painter and just leave it at that? Why is it so hard to just admit someone is skilled?

>> No.3046357

Because they consider themselves skilled, and can't believe that someone who has been doing something for a long ass time knows more then they do and deserves it through hard work and dedication.

And it's a meme now.

/ic/ is so easily impressed. Academic realism and high amount of details is the highiest form of art for you. You're so narrow-minded that you can't even recognise a good drawing unless it's a realistic study. That's why you should study history of art if you want to be a real artist and not a mere craftsman.

the problem with this guy, Ruan Jia, and others with the same style is that they focus so much on rendering and not much on perspective, composition, and drawing the figure in general. once you get past all the shimmery "digital-impressionism" you can see they neglected their most obvious weak points and that all they've really mastered are painting portraits.

this is not to say they aren't skilled. just that the closer you look at this stuff the less impressive it gets.

>> No.3048503

I'd agree with your general argument, but RJ has been working pretty hard the last few years at his figure drawing and perspective skills to try to fill out his weaknesses. It's part of what puts him above his many clones.

Alright honest question here, should I learn to paint in this style ? in the wei/jia style ?

considering my current skill level I recon it would take around 6months to a year to achieve a level close to that. but where would I possibly look for work after that ? it looks good but aren't there a lot of chinese artists that can already do that and cheaper ?

Why bother to become a rendering god when you can't even develop your own style?
