IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

That makes sense, I'm still just getting started with learning painting and colors so I never even thought about how the original painter would mix their colors. Thank you!

I'm no expert so definitely take this with a grain of salt but on your study it just seems like mostly the colors themselves are what's off. Sargent's colors are much less saturated than what you put down although this could've been done on purpose. I tried to do a paintover/comparison in pic related, I don't know how to do a "proper" paintover so I hope it's useful at all.

The shapes are solid except for around his right shoulder, in the original painting they seem to slope more, but it seems like this was mostly just a study of the face itself. There's also a couple issues with value, especially in the eyes but I feel like that has to do with the colors you picked more than anything.

I hope this is helpful anon.

You're definitely more along the right track than the other poster. His work is all over the place with color, and isn't very well done - typical for someone learning portrait painting outside of formal training.
There's a wealth of information out there from actual painters. Here's a couple, that might give you some more help in how to approach this.
Cesar Santos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce7leNdACKk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFWQlDAWVrc

Andrew Tischler:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuGWvmvK-3w&t=612s

Daria Callie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K33Lt6SaBmM

Watch these videos, and see how painters approach the work - this is how you should be doing it too, but with digital tools. The concepts and colors are the same.

This is all over the place. There is no cohesiveness to it, you're putting what you think is there, and not what is really there, and why. There are too many different base colors in the face, there should be 3 - highlight, midtone, shadow - and then small variations of that. You're not sculpting the shapes with color or value, you're trying to do a paint by numbers with no idea of why each area is the color it is, no sense of depth, no lighting. And, the background color should be related somehow to the main figure, as a complimentary color, echoed in the skin tones as ambient light. Look at the original - there is a commonality of hue across the face, not patchwork of different hues like you have. Sargent was using brush strokes along with color to build form, which is completely absent in yours. Your colors are too vibrant, or simply the wrong hue, like the background, which is a sap green, which compliments the reds of the face. (I suspect your monitor is at fault here.)

His skin tones aren't milky, they're accurate. That's what you've missed completely in this study.

The human body is so hard compared to still objects, the body itself isn't bad, even fingers or hands or feet, but faces? I struggle with them. This must be a case of what they call symbol drawing as well as a fundamental misunderstanding of the human face and how it looks.

I didn't attempt for this to be cartoonish or animelike at first, I wanted this to be realistic, but as I continued I slowly realized I have no idea what a face looks like, what details that make a face a face besides vague shape. Loomis said that a skull can be approximated with a sphere and a flat plane, and the book states that I should practice from different angles, that's fine, but given my problem is so severe that my faces look like this, should I do reference drawings or follow loomis at first? Or something else?

You don't need Loomis to do figure drawing. You don't need Loomis at all, in fact, it's just a meme here. There are hundreds of books on the subject, and classes, and videos. Loomis is one (outdated) way.

As far as the "quickly as possible" thing, that's impossible to answer. We have no idea f you have any talent for it, how fast you learn, and how hard you'll work at it. Figure drawing is a lot of thing, and learning to control your hand is one of them, and that takes time and practice. You can't cram a year's worth of playing football into a weekend, and you can't cram a semester's worth of figure drawing into a week or less.
Pick one of the books, start doing the practice. You have no idea if you even LIKE drawing.

>> No.3036304

>>3036287
i guess what i meant by the "quickly as possible" bit was not that i'm expecting it to go fast, but that there are a bazillion tutorials and books and whatnot out there, and it's not really clear what's actually going to get me closer to figure drawing specifically, what's too complicated for me to actually gain any insight from currently, etc. I guess maybe I just need to try a bunch of them, but it seems like this is a place that tons of other people have probably been in before, so I was just hoping to get some direction.

I almost exclusively draw people outside. Before that I did a couple of years doing figure drawings. I find that outside, the important things are being able to get things down fast, use few lines and be able to see the big shapes and gestures quickly. I guess a way to practice it, is to go through an album of nude figures on a timer, but that's not very realistic either as people outside are always moving. So, go outside as much as possible and do regular old figure and gesture drawings inside would be my suggestion. Always have a sketchbook on you.

Are you the Loomis head anon?

Loomis is only about construction. It helps you create a model shape of the head. It won't teach you to draw a realistic one though. The only way to learn that is by attempting to draw a face from reference. Before you approach that though, you have to correct your symbol drawing.

Symbol drawing is when you are drawing what you think and not what you see. In your case, it's when you draw an almond shape line to represent an eye. However, there are no lines in a real eye. There is just value, different shapes ranging from dark to light. To draw it well, you must be able to replicate the shapes and shades of value with the pencil.

Look at this picture for reference and try to draw it. Instead of using outlines, you must draw using shades. Pay attention to the shapes of the shadows. If you still find yourself dependent on lines, turn the picture upside down so that you stop seeing an eye and only see shapes. You can still use lines but only to mark the broad shapes to keep your drawing together.

If you can accomplish drawing this, you'll begin to understand how to draw the entire face, and it will break you out of your symbol drawing.

Advice: start at the beginning. A scene like this is way above your skill level. Pull the scene apart into pieces, and learn to render and draw each piece correctly, then try to combine them into a scene. There are so many flaws, it's pointless to call out all of them, it's easier to point you in the right direction. Finished this one.

Fixed the legs (inside was too rounded and outside was too flat), fixed the arms and hand like I wanted, manned up and drew feet. Wasn't too proud of the eyes or mask, but it's better my other stuff.

The clothes look thick-ish (I trimmed them down greatly) because that's the design in game. The neck down is a bodysuit, which is why the fingers and gloveless and the legs turn into boots.

>> No.3037179

>>3037152
You have to learn how the things you draw look. So yes, either get good at copying, or spend a lot of time observing and studying. You see humans everyday irl, in movies, in porn etc, so it's easier with them, but drawing animals from imagination is way harder, and really nobody can draw a decent cat on the first attempt without drawing them from nature/reference first, except maybe a felinologist.

Try drawing the body without the clothes first, and try to imagine what it actually looks like, what form does every part have. But you probably still find it very difficult, because you don't know the human body that well, so practice with a reference.

You have good sense of what the human form SHOULD be. But, you need to draw what is there rather than what you think should be there. The size of the eyes to the right is far too large, and your head shape is not the same as the pictures. There is good structure, but I would suggest learning how to draw from observation.

if your line of sight is parallel to the ground plane, your verticals will all be perfectly vertical. this will get you by in most cases - three point is if you're drawing something so tall that the vertical lines converge

your block is crooked because your third point is not directly vertical from your intersection

Not really imo. You're still symbol drawing and your work is very sloppy. If you take some time to be more careful in your work, you will see improvement. Work on your measurements, check the angle relationships and be very precise. Then when you're shading, don't chicken scratch. Do it as cleanly as you can.

Last, pick a better reference picture to draw. Don't choose pictures that are small and blurry.

Your pattern distribution is too linear, try to vary how the shirt folds
The ear is wrong, even simplified it shouldn't look like that
There should be a mouth or at least a line under that moustache
Try to learn how a shirt looks around a neck and then simplify it, because here it just looks like a bunch on lines to me

Sorry if it sounds harsh but i really like your drawing however, very efficient

Pretty much everything but you're beginning to learn. Still needs work though. Look closely at the lips for example and notice the difference in shape between yours and the reference. You drew a symbolic shape of the lips.

Don't stylize or use cross-hatching just yet. First learn to shade softly and make something look realistic. Then simplifying your shading will make sense later on.
