IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Draw things you like. Most artists are able to get past that motivation hurdle because their only reason for drawing isn't just to get good. It's also because drawing makes them happy in some way, and that makes them want to work harder to do what they like better. So just draw.

I think this is also why a lot of successful artists started when they were younger. When your a kid, you don't worry about being good, you just draw what you want. So try and realize it's okay not to be the best artist right now, you will improve in time.

You still need to know anatomy. It might take 2 years, it might not. The point is you do need a grasp of the basic fundamentals like anatomy and perspective and you need to practice a lot

I don't agree you should ignore what you want to draw, but it shouldn't be the only thing you draw if you're a beginner.

How much work you put into it is up to you.

A few pointers:
-Try more wet into wet when you're putting down the base colors
-Layer less, try to get the color intensity right on the first couple of passes. Mix the paint darker than you think you need
-Don't drybrush unless it's for detail
-Experiment with not using black paint

Tips for setting up realistic daily goals for myself?

I have basically nothing to do until November and I'd like to use my time somewhat constructively. I have plenty of time in a day but I don't really have experience making myself draw every day and I don't want to burn myself out by forcing an unrealistic goal. At the same time I don't want to get lazy with a low goal either.

I know "stop planning just draw" and I am but I'd like to have a more structured path.

It's the opposite for me. I think it means you really need to work on your observation skills. That drawing seems like a 10 minute sketch, you need a hell of a lot more detail than that. You should expect to spend at least 4-10 hours on a full body like pic like that. It would also be easier to do less. Do just the torso, just the face.. go little by little, it's mostly about patience.

Think about it like any given sport. You see Sports Black Man shoot a three from half way across the court. You've mever played sportsball, but you think "wow, I wanna do that". But you won't get anywhere just launching balls from the halfcourt line. You have to train your shooting form, your muscles, your footwork, your sense of space to get to a point where you can "effortlessly" nail a three.

In sports, you have the first 25 years of your life to get to this point, and if you haven't made it by then you're a failure forever. What's great about art is that you can be 70 and still git gud in time, and that the skills/life lessons you pick up learning are actually useful in the real world. You have no rush, just try to slow down.

The thing is that you are drawing from reference but you are not doing a study, you are symbol drawing on top of a memorized Loomis construction.

I'm not good either but pic related took me about 2 hours and a half. I also think there is way too much light in your reference picture, personally I find it a lot more difficult, find a pic with more shadows, it's more fun and helps you locate everything easier.

Try to measure everything by looking a lot at the reference, every line you draw see what angle it has and what you can compare it to to make sure it's alright.

Also, anyone that wants to critique my study please.

If you are committing to drawing with a pen then learn cross-hatching. Alphonso Dunn on youtube has great tutorials on it, and his book is supposed to be good, all about pen drawing.

Either way, as a beginner, sketch it out with pencil first, then apply ink. There's no point in critiquing your own work when you can't/won't fix it. Keep fixing it until you think it's perfect, or have no idea what is wrong with it, then post it.

Jesus Christ. That didn't photograph well at all. The whole thing was drawn with a H2, so that's probably why.

Anyway, /ic/, I am a former government bureaucratic who is being slowly killed by desk jobs and paperwork. My goal is to be a tattoo artist. I am a complete novice at drawing, and this shit is fucking hard as shit. Took a little "personal enrichment" class at my local community college months ago, then never practiced after that. This is my first time picking up a pencil again in months, and I suck. As stylized as most tattoos are, I've thought maybe I don't need to get gud at drawing realistically from life, but deep down, I know that's just lying to myself. Even American Traditional requires realistic proportions and shading and shit, and with the popularity of high quality black and gray, it wouldn't make sense to limit myself stylistically.

Pic is where I'd like to be someday. Chicano style ink is really appealing to me.
