IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Almost no book desu, but I'm gonna buy Drawing With The Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.

What I practice the most is figure drawing, just copying cute nude gurls. I don't fully understand Loomis yet but I'm kinda grasping it, though I don't necessarily want Loomis specific model. I'm trying to draw a circle and then a T on it and be able to see a face, and I'm getting to that point. And by Loomis I mean the very basic draw a round circle add T, jaw and build face, that's all I got from his book, couldn't keep going cause I didn't understand it at the moment.

One exercise that I've been doing lately that helps my pulse is to draw a circle, and slowly circle on top. I press stronger, then softer, and keep doing the circle on top of itself. Faster, then slower too. Then backwards. And the same with a square and a triangle. That has really helped me, and practicing with pen to get rid of chicken scratches.

Instead of drawing something as is, or as you see it, you draw it using simplistic symbols that represent said thing.

;-) = Isn't a face. It's a symbol. This is an exaggerated example, but if you were to draw a picture or from life without your eyes being on the subject at minimum 50% of the time, you're just symbol drawing on memorized locations.

The idea for us beginners is to "do more studies", as in draw a lot of faces and bodies and hands and foots and everything FROM REFERENCE, and amplify our visual library before drawing from imagination.

Once you understand exactly what a nose is, its different shapes and proportions, how it reacts to light, etc, only then you should simplify that nose into symbols to adjust to your style. Same with every body part.

That's how I understand it, anyway. You should draw things as you see, and your drawing is not detailed enough to look realistic. If you are not using a reference, why not? And how could anyone possible give you critique if you can just say "It's my style bro I draw them with small shoulders, triangled biceps and funky foreshortening"? That's why most people that get critique here or seek for critique do studies.

Pentel also supply mechanical pencils. I've used one and they're alright, as pic related is drawn with it. It's more of a question of line quality (you could make it work probably better than I did)

http://www.postofficeshop.co.uk/pencils-and-refill-leads/pentel/120-auto-pencil-pe04800/?gclid=CjwKEAjwjunJBRDzl6iCpoKS4G0SJACJAx-Vu8wmuA3ovDTRGLpwGxL4gWD99Q3rV5jdGvczXjlPKhoCh1rw_wcB

Other good mechanical pencils are those produced by Korean Airways and Faber Castell. If you want to play it safe, buy a Faber Castell mechanical pencil

Just loosen up, do some small thumbnail sketches of the subject before moving on to the actual thing and don't expect to see an amazing drawing just appear.

Promised to whom? If you promised it to yourself, don't be an idiot; you'll break this kind of promise sooner or later, and you first would be crushed and really wanting to kill/hurt yourself, but then you would be granted a strange sense of freedom from one of your chains. It happens if you have OCR, and it's the best kind of cure from it.
If you promised it to somebody else, just sit at the computer and work, work, work on it all the free time you have without stopping to browse 4chan or to do other time-consuming activities. Before you know it, the painting would be completed.

Hey /ic/, I've been doing the Scott Eaton's anatomy course and am on week 3 right now, I understand where all the muscles up until now originate, their names and connections.

But how does this help me draw? How do you suggest I practice this knowledge alongside the exercises which are only like "find this muscle on this photo".

I was thinking about getting a master artist on anatomy and doing what they call "master studies", study what another guy did about anatomy and did well on a drawing.

But you're right, alongside knowing what they are and where they connect I should know which muscles are responsible for which movement...

So to practice seeing that, draw a lot of anatomy poses and figure drawing (10min+)?

The way I see it
Novice - Has never drawn in his life
Beginner - Wants to improve and mostly practices fundamentals, still fundamentally bad (symbol drawing, bad perspective, etc)
Intermediate - Knows and understands the fundamentals but still can't implement them completely and has a long way to go in creating and forming a style
Advanced - The fundamentals are down and the artist is looking to find his style, the thing that should concern an advanced artist it's the find of the thing that makes his art his
Master - The artist it's unchained of fundamental skill and now can use them at will, has found his style and can draw as he wishes while leaving a mark that this is indeed his work, recognizable and unique.

We all have to make it anon.

Ugh, sorry, I totally forgot about it over continuing my translation of a certain article on Japanese gardening.

Anyway, faces aren't actually that round, so the far side needs to be bigger. Besides, if she actually needs those glasses to see things properly, they would distort her face outlines (or, to be precise, shift them). You need to clean up some of the lines as well, mostly at her sweater, and you need to be more careful about showing the hair texture. The sweater is not showing the shape enough, you need to apply shading and better curves to it as well. There is also little reason for her far twintail to be so far back while the closer one doesn't even reach the shoulder, even if she is tilting her head to the side. Reduce the shown amount. And her mouth might be a little off... no, it IS shifted off-axis to her right cheek (the closer one). Oh, and the neck is too straight and looks manly, make it curvier.

I think that's all.

That anon was being a dick, don't mind him. DA is in my opinion one of the better sites to have your drawings displayed. Unlike tumblr your can display pieces you especially like, sort them in folders and so on. It's definitely easier to access and manage. Tumblr is more popular though. Just post on both platforms.
Once you're better known or if your goal is not primarily an internet audience but applying to publishers, galleries or companies you will definitely want to have your own portfolio website.

Good luck and have fun.

Well it also gives you more freedom to have a looser posture, it looks more like it's about to pounce. If you're going for a feeling of sailing through space like it's on water look up some references of boats or aquatic animals and how they move through water.

They might look graceful and still from a top view but if you can see below or under them their legs would be moving or hanging down.

You have cute concepts but you should think about consistency and how you'd want it to work. You need to think about how your drawings "read" to other people. If you want people to think it's paddling through the sea of space then have it be paddling

did you start off with a painting or did you have a drawing underneath it? if it's a straight up paint, i'd work on the form of the breasts specifically the way you have the right one sort of just floating and defying gravity. 1. For the hair, i see that you've defined each strand but it's lacking in volume and flow, though the hair around the right side of her neck looks good.

2. the left side of her face looks very unreadable.

that's pretty great for 6 months good job

For visual storytelling this book is often considered the gold standard for composition

https://www.amazon.com/Framed-Ink-Drawing-Composition-Storytellers/dp/1933492953

For pure writing the trick is to write a lot and read a lot, people tend to respond well to consistency and sincerity. Try reading a lot of comics and seeing how they push the story forward, or you can just do some silly gag comics if you prefer.

>> No.3016811

>>3016800
Well for any kind of writing other than flow of consciousness where you want consistency you'd write a broad outline first of all.

I imagine there's a lot of ways you could go about writing a comic, some people do script first, some do storyboards, in film you'd have both.

I know there's script writing programs out there and I'm sure at least one has the kind of visualization tool you're looking for. Otherwise you can just get a big whiteboard or something

This is exactly how not to receive critique. How the fuck are people supposed to help you when your extremely disproportional simple drawing is justified in "its muuh style".

I think it's better to ignore this kind of posters and just critique actual studies. No one can help you, and you will not get better if you just "do your style". Most artists that find a style do so after years of extensive practice and improvement of their art.

Your attempt looks pretty interesting even as a failure.

Next time, you could try analyzing the values of the ref. Ignore all detail (any subtle change in value) and try to block in the scene with only a few different values.
Use a hard brush for this first step.

> I just floundered around for like an hour
Yeah, that's a common issue. When that happens, you need to compare your drawing to your original value plan and adjust accordingly.
Always keep the overall values in mind and step back to look at your work periodically.

With trees, just think of them as blobs of color. They don't deserve any more detail than you're willing to give them.

>> No.3016962

>>3016579

Build up your values. Take a step back and squint your eye at the ref. See the dark and light areas? (it might be easier if you desaturate the image first.) Roughly put those in first. Don't start with really bright white or dark darks. If you go that intense it's a hassle to tone it down. Of course if you're familiar with the software it's easy. Still, start with lower value and slowly build it up. Better not rely too much on the software.

Don't start detailing right away. Just put values all over and start refining it bit by bit. Don't focus on one area too long. BIG to small. Start with the big patches then slowly move in and work on the small details.

sure, then.

I'm not sure what you were going for here, and you have to be honest with yourself. were you going for a cartoonized stylization or a realistic reproduction of the picture?

Either way, the model's likeness is not present in your rendition. she lost her deadpan look, acquired a hook nose and big cheekbones. nor the face and the head look anything like the original picture, is what i'm saying. Seems like you made her "ethnicky" just because she had a headscarf on, which is why i called tumblr.

If you just said fuck it and made your own thing only using the picture as a base reference, then ignore what i said so far, but don't be one of those "hey it's my style" cunts if you didn't. The drapery looks rather nice, but i'm not a fan of the scribbles on her left arm. In fact, try to use more confident lines for most of the linework so they lose the scribble aspect.

I'm confused with perspective, but I don't really know how to explain. I guess it goes something along the lines of "Do I have to use perspective into every single drawing that I make?"

If I want to draw this woman for example, do I have to somehow find a horizon line and vanishing points? Vilppu says that we can construct everything from boxes, so do I have to "blockify" this woman (or whatever it is I am going to draw) before actually drawing her? and how can I be sure where the horizon line and VPs are? Then there is one exercise with a bunch of boxes stringed together seen from a difficult angle and I just couldn't figure out how to find their vanishing points or how they connected to the same horizon line.

In this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBv5z0Y2odE)) the guy draws a piece of paper in perspective and then draws a bunch of them, do all these sheets have their own vanishing points over different horizon lines?
