IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

im starting to see this, because im starting to get fucking bored with the way i draw. i did this drawing (not even accurately, i know) and do drawings like this in a single pass and afterwards stare it it thinking 'holy shit i cannot imagine anything else i can do to improve it.' and thats that. i feel empty inside and move onto the next one.

One common problem you see in beginners after they read Loomis, is that really stick with his guidelines on the ratios of the features of the body. Pencils are for drawing. Why is that hard to understand.

How long something takes is irrelevant, you're getting hung up on something that doesn't matter at all.

The next step is to stop scribbling, and develop line skills, and learning to shade correctly. What you're doing is high end rough drafts - now it's time to move towards finished pieces.

Loomis doesn't cover everything though. It is just a very basic guideline, most useful to those who have no idea how to draw but you should move on from it once you understand the gist of it. You can always come back to it later when you're confused as it does have many good tips for beginners.

After Loomis, there are plenty of drawing resources you can use. Just go on youtube and you'll find what you need. Since you're learning on your own, you have to figure this out for yourself. Loomis isn't the only recommendation but it is often the first because of how well it get's people started with drawing.

>>3010283
That's an unfair expectation. The early challenges of drawing is learning how follow measurements and draw precisely. Beginners first need to learn a preset or guideline before they can start deviating from the rules. It's necessary or else they will not learn how to hone in their drawings from disproportionate and ugly to passable looking figures

Forget Loomis - you're already biased against it, so you won't learn.

Here's the curriculum of a basic drawing course, in college. It's USC, which isn't known for it's art program, but it's a pretty decent course of study. Read the PDF, and look at the course goals, and the weekly breakdowns. This should give you a basic idea of what to research and work on.

http://web-app.usc.edu/soc/syllabus/20143/33210.pdf

Here's another that covers all the basics:

http://basicdrawingfall2012.blogspot.com/p/syllabus.html

Start with a circle, then add a triangular shape for the jaw. The center horizontal of the circle is your brow line. The point between the chin and the brow line is the base of your nose. etc, etc. It's just basic construction.

That picture though skips over the construction as the artist probably already did it in their head. Then they just followed the basic shapes of the hair, neck, and shadows. If you can't do that yet, then do the head construction.

Okay, that's fine for a generic head.

Now teach them how to observe and draw the unique shapes that skulls and jaws have. The jaw is the foundation for the lower half of the face, and is crucial - and everyone's is different. It's more than just a triangle.

Then show them how muscles form the face.

If you're gonna step up, and teach, do more than "draw a circle and a triangle", because if that's all you have, you've failed them as a teacher.

Looks pretty good, as a start. Colors are a bit bright - might want to tone them down a bit, especially the banana. Look for color in the bowl, black is a bad color for this composition, as it draws the eye - the focus should be the fruit. I'd add some color to the background, so you could reflect it off the black, and tone that way, way back.

Then, go the next couple of steps of refining the shapes and forms, with blending and edges and textures. You're on the right track!

Whoa, in no way was I trying to be a teacher.

Construction is just a guideline. No one is expected to follow it to a T but it does help beginners get a working model of a head. One of the main struggle I had in drawing the head was keeping everything in alignment and proportional. The construction helped a lot with that.

Learning to observe and draw unique shapes is important too. I never implied that it wasn't. But looking at it from a purely beginner perspective where maybe basic measuring is still a struggle, having that simplified guideline initially is very useful.

I was right, the value is what makes it look flat.

Eyes: I can see you drew a tiny really black iris and the other thing around it whatever is called really light, it doesn't look like that in the picture. It's like 3 circles, black, lighter black, black, with some highlights. Also, her eyelids thingy on top of her eyes are too small in your drawing and too light. The white part of the eyes isn't actually full-white, it gets darker in the corners, especially near the hair. Also, outside her left eye (our right), on the near-nose side, shadows form some sort of V shape. From the eye sockets to the skin between eye and eyebrow, you didn't draw that shadow at all.

Nose: You're missing the big left shadow. In your drawing both sides look the same, which makes the lighting flat and non-realistic, while in the picture you almost can't even see the right side and the left side has a big, dark, smooth shadow.

Mouth, right cheek, top right forehead, all missing some shading too. In the picture you can see how the light comes from a certain direction, while in your drawing it seems to come from right in front of her. Her chin is rounder IRL, and adding that big shade below it, on the neck, will help too.

I can't even tell what that white thing on her hair is supposed to be. A hair band? Dyed hair? Looks a little bit like a bald-spot on your drawing. Not sure how to fix that.

Again, all of this is through a beginner's eyes, but the lack of shading is pretty obvious.

Are there any good resources that cover caricature stuff? Proportions are off, eyes and mouth are too small. Take your time comparing the placement of visual landmarks: How wide is X compared to Y? Is the distance from the bottom of the nose to the top of the upper lip longer or shorter than the distance from the bottom of the lower lip to the chin? Etc. A lot of these measurements are arbitrary: just use what works in this instance. Other times the measurements are guided by anatomical knowledge - knowing the anatomical textbook "norm", and recognizing what ways the model deviates and by how much.

More importantly, you chose a terrible photo to study. Small, grainy, poorly lit. Stick to strong single directional light sources for the time being.

Just accept that you might have to redo a ton of work. Either your initial measurements are off, or you're not adhering to them as the piece progresses. In both cases the only solution is practice. Eventually you get better at judging the early proportions, and you'll be able to correct them earlier in the process. This is also why it's a good idea to work general to specific: establish the whole, then refine everything in stages. Don't render until the drawing is in place, and the simple value groups are mapped.

Don't listen to them, they have no idea what they are talking about. It's pretty obvious you are trying to draw what you see and not symbols.

Your problem is that your proportions are way off. The best way to fix that is either trace the photo or do the grid system to see where you are off. You will be able to see very clearly what you are getting wrong and will do a better job the next time you try to draw it from looking at it.

Forget eye placement for a while and try to nail down the landmarks so you can get the perspective right, if you observe the bony landmarks on the face you'll notice that chin and the upper part of zygomatic bone can tell you the perspective, also try to concentrate on getting the planes of the head right and adding details will become much easier, right now the perspective of your nose is different from the eyes

You're giving yourself a handicap. Practice with pen or pencil until you can afford a tablet. You will draw better than with the mouse 100% of the time. It's like practicing running with a single leg, what's the point? It's not a different tool like graffiti that will get you different results, it's the same results but worse.

1) Fix your negative/positive shapes before you start shading. Give it one flat shade and make sure it's as good as possible.

2) Establish your darkest darks, your lightest lights. Put the background in.

3) Focus on the darks, then on the lights. Work in passes, ignore reflected light.

Ignore the head features, get the shapes right first and then once you've had a bit of a warm up, put the eye sockets and the nose in. Watch the tilt and rotations of the head.

Your reflected light is overstated and it looks like you're trying to paint chrome. Similarly a lot of your midtones are being treated like full light. The light patch on the torso is painted much brighter than it should be for example.

You should really consider matching the background value to the ref so that you can better judge value changes accurately.

So, I've always heard people talking about how committing to lines is a really important part of drawing.
Now I can't draw for shit, and I'm looking to get started on the path, but I imagine I'd likely do that thing where you kinda "reinforce" lines in order to set them how you want them to be, as opposed to doing things in one stroke.

It's too contrasty on the face and arms. I can't blame you, or the photo, since I don't see the reference.

You're blocking general forms okay - but the arms are all wrong. Her arm, wrist and forearm all have shapes, you just have a noodle.

You spent time to put details in the eyes, mouth, and philtrum (the part between the mouth and nose), and earrings, but left the rest raw, rough and unfocused. If this is a step in the path towards a final piece, concentrate on the whole figure, and put everything in the same focus.
You need to work on blending.
If you can, post the reference.

Hey, I have never ever drawn from life and I keep running away from doing any actual studies in fear of failure.

I am tired of pretending and saying "yeah m8 I'm learning to draw, I'm not too good yet tho" to anyone who asks me about my creative hobbies.

I know I need to learn to figure draw first of all, but I am not good at just winging it, so I want to follow a path made by someone, who knows what they're doing.

Should RGB to CYMK conversion really only be done in InDesign? Converting to 16bit then Photoshop's own little channel mode switch thing really not good enough? And I'm assuming copy/pasting layers from a RGB file to CYMK file wouldn't work.

>> No.3012877

>>3012847
CMYK conversion should never be done by the designer, unless you know what color profiles to use to do so. Are you going to use U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2? US Sheetfed coated v2? Do you even know what that is? If you don't, don't touch the color modes, you will be altering the files in ways that could be a disaster.

If you're working in a workflow where you're working with vendors, ALWAYS ask the vendor what to use, and in a lot of cases, they'll send you profiles for their imagesetters, so your files are converted properly, or tell you what profile to use. I always ask my press guys what settings to use, and it saves me and my company a significant amount of money, with no "surprises" happening on press or in proofing.

Copy/pasting into a CMYK file does work, but it translates color on the fly - it will also throw a dialog box at you warning of the color shift, because it can be a really bad idea.

What are you doing that requires CMYK, and what's your experience with it?

BTW - InDesign uses the same profiles that Photoshop does, to convert. I've never heard of letting InDesign convert, in a professional context, because that throws up errors in pre-flight checks. And, you need to have your color settings set up correctly for whatever printer/imagesetter you're targeting, and those setting applied universally to the Creative Suite. If you don't know what that is, don't convert ANYTHING until you know what you're doing.

The iris of the eye would be closer to a circle at that angle, not an oval.

The right eye is just mangled. The eyelids don't match the right, the iris is in the wrong place and in the wrong direction, and again, more of a circle. The eyelids are laying over an orb, which dictates the shape of the lids. You would see a distinct curve of the eyeball on the far left of the drawing.

Simplify it. Draw tow circles, that's what the shape the eye is no matter what the angle is. Put the pupil and iris in the same places. Draw them at an angle. Now construct the eyelids around them.

A lot of beginner struggle with this - study references, break it down, LOOK at what you're drawing. What you drew doesn't make sense. Your lack of confidence and knowledge made you draw poorly, keep at it.

Nope, I don't know what any of those are. I made a piece for a small gallery and since I'm so used to working in RGB and not printing anything, I started working in that mode by default. My relative can get a great deal at a printing place so they offered to handle the printing for me, bless them, but I'm overseas and won't be able to view the printed product and evaluate the accuracy of the colors myself. This is all kind of disastrous but I feel it's too late to back out now. Do you think everything will look accurate when printed? Or would they be a little muddy? Would I need to get my relative to explain the situation to the printing service and get them to help out somehow?

When I was copy/pasting the layers it surprisingly wasn't giving me any warnings about color shifts - they appeared to be the same as the RGB document but when viewed in a different program you could see just how wildly different the colors were. It was horrible.

Thank you so much for you advice though. It means a lot to me, I'll definitely keep it in mind.

>Do you think everything will look accurate when printed?

There is absolutely no way to know that, if you can't proof the printing before they run it.

>Would I need to get my relative to explain the situation to the printing service and get them to help out somehow?

Yes. This is absolutely a time when you need to let them know you have NO experience with this, and you need all the information you can get. First question should be, "Can I send a sample(if you have one) and can you correct to that?"

If you're going to be doing printing for clients, you NEED to learn this stuff. You're going to waste a lot of time, money, and clients if you don't. It took me years to learn the ropes working with printing.

Seriously, I would look into killing the job and letting the client print it. You're taking too many chances, and don't have the experience to do this kind of work.

i think the main challenge of perspective is having constancy across the whole image. better practice would be drawing multiple boxes in different orientations in the same picture, this forces you to think about how each box should look in relation to the boxes already in the image. you should take your time to calculate angles, quantity means nothing if there is no quality

Hey, does anyone have any tips for learning how to draw & write with my non dominant hand? I've been doing a lot of Loomis with my non-dominant hand. I've gotten great at drawing circles, but I still can't write with it. I can spend 2-5 hours on this per day.
