The only tip for avoiding Cal Arts style is to construct your characters' faces using a 3D form, that's it. I'm not kidding.

While yes,I for one am also getting sick and tired of the same looking style in popular american cartoons, there are some elements to this style that are admirable, and a big reason why it is used so much in animation.

For instance, animation for TV is expensive, we all know that, so the simple character designs save time on animation, giving more time for writing, creating beautiful backgrounds, and music. Not to mention the characters are easily recognizable, if you were to look at a silhouette of any of the main character in on the shows of cartoon network, you can immediately tell who is who. Finally, a good use of the Cal Arts style follows the mickey mouse rule. Look simple, but be a bitch tot draw from memory alone, get one detail off and the thing looks wonky.

However, if we are talking about animating or drawing cartoon characters alone, there are some simple ways to avoid the cal arts style.

-Use thick outlines

-Be messy with your line work

-Avoid the cheek bulge head

-let your characters break model in their body shape when they move

-add a little dash of anatomic accuracy

In terms of character design and color palettes, what would be the best way to avoid the CalArts / generic style? Avoiding ugly bright primary colors?

Pic related, own character.

You should draw what you like instead of worrying about what other people draw. If you are trying to pick a style as a reaction to someone else's, what happens if the cal arts style becomes the one you picked? Are you going to change your style again because of what other people are doing? That is about the fakest way to go about art and is just as bad as hopping on the band wagon of what ever is popular

people fall into the calarts meme seem to have been WANTING to be like other artists but fail
pic seems a bit bland, but fine. I'd refine it and maybe switch the shirt and bg colors. bg pops out more than her

Not him, but that's a crop from a manga, so pressumably the girl isn't looking at a random corner in space but is actually looking at something of relevance to the reader.

her eyes are clearly not directed at the text nor de viewer they are more on an angle on a 2th imaginer wall
also her face is on slightly inclined while her hair/head is straight

>are you retarded or just blind?

Are you? Didn't you read at all what I just wrote? It's a crop of a manga page. It's not a standalone illustration where the artist did the same "looking at a corner" cliché that the guy was pointing out. It's either a crop of a bigger scene or it's a single panel that is followed up by the girl noticing a fucking object or whatever where she is looking at or maybe something else entirely, who knows. Are you really too dumb to understand the difference between an illustration and sequential art? Obviously in comics and manga you'll find thousands of panels of characters not looking at the fucking viewer but that's not the same thing as that guy was pointing out.
