looks like an ayylmao, eyes are off (and too big), nose is wonky. I'm not sure if there'd be any good method for planning a drawing when stipling, unless you did an underdrawing for feature placement in pencil then stipled in pen.

>> No.2992483

>>2992306
I love the stippling but you're ignoring the subtle details of the face.

Here's what I mean. The eye on the right in your reference photo has more of it's iris visible since the child's not squashing his cheek.

Since more of the iris is visible, the eye looks wider

The nose you stippled is pointing straight at the viewer even though the child is NOT looking straight ahead in the reference

So more of the right side should be visible.

The eyebrows are to well defined in your image. In the original they're thin and faint

the eye on the right is too close to the nose

The lips are also tilted downward a tad too much and are too defined.

Most of what I've just pointed out is meant to show that the subtle details make up the face and if certain details are off like the eyes, eyebrows, nose or lips, the whole portrait can go wrong.

People with soft features can be pretty hard since there's less room for error and you must be subtle. Maybe try using a basic grid for the proportions? You could sketch out the face in very light pencil then go over with stippling

Love your rendering, but there are a few issues. The building in the background looks like a paper cut-out. Give it a much broader value range to add some plasticity, reference a photo if you're not sure.
Also be careful with the blur. I'd suggest to use it either on moving objects or as a depth of field effect - which means the part of the street that are the same distance as the front of the bus (the focal point) should be crisp as well.

It seems the trouble you're encountering now go all the way back to your initial lay-in. Do you use straight lines to envelope your drawing before you add depth? Straights are easier to judge angles and proportions on.

Problem:

>I have to make a SWAT guy and I don't know how to make him look interesting cause his outfit is all black and its already really dark.
Should I make the fabric on his costume a different color than the armor? Which should be darker?

Solution:
You can solve this by differentiating the materials of the uniform. They may be the same (or similar) color, but you can still add variation by making some matte (plastic, uniform fabric) some reflective (gloss plastic, metal), adding varying shapes, some elements that are different color (unit badge, lettering on the back) and so on.

The PROBLEM with the Solution:

You will not be able to accomplish the above, because the subject matter does not match your current skill level. You will fail at differentiating the materials, because you haven't spent many hours painting still life paintings of different material objects. You don't know how to depict a glossy thing, a matte thing etc. This is only one of your problems. Do you see how you have no value hierarchy in your illustration? How the trees end and suddenly the grass starts (belonging to a vastly different color and value family)? How the grass right next to the glowing guy is the same brightness as the grass far away from him? You don't know how to depict those things, because you never painted a landscape in plen-aire, or even studied any movie screenshots or landscape photographs. You are even too lazy to grab a toy gun or a broomstick and shoot some photo ref to have a decent pose of the swat guy. And even if you weren't, you couldn't use the reference properly, because, again, you haven't spent many hours practicing life drawing. Now, you can learn and accomplish a successful illustration by:

>> No.2995505

>>2995504>>2995384
option one: studying the subjects outlined above with the purpose of studying, and after maybe 2-5 years knock it out just the way you want

option two: trying to produce artwork you don't have the skill for, banging your head against the wall and spinning your wheels for many years, until finally accepting option one.

You know who really makes it? The people who do a lot of boring stuff (studies, as opposed to artwork) with the long term goal in mind. Those unable to delay gratification (producing artwork and harvesting money/likes/whatever) are doomed to thrash in confusion and either give up or learn to delay gratification. Good luck, you can do it!

the face in profile really betrays your lack of understanding of form. you don't understand what you are looking at yet. that doesn't come with "anatomy practice" or whatever vague shit /ic/ usually recommends that's going to come with drawing observationally and understanding what it is you are drawing. It can help to try to draw what you are looking at in a different perspective to make your mind try to understand exactly what it is you are looking at with the information your eyes are giving you.

bit hard to see, but looks okay. i think you slightly animed your proportions, unless you have a tiny chin and huge eyes.

the rendering is all fine, could be better, you may want to think about the 'head egg' a bit more when you're doing the tones. i know this portrait is probably mostly very observational, but it's worth checking against the concept just to make sure you're getting a sphere and not something that looks like light relief.

The image colors were all pretty same-y like the forest, ruin walls, snakes, and water all kinda looked like similar hues so they all sort of blended together. What you are trying to convey? Placement of her hand is pretty crucial. If you want to go for "Don't worry, stay with me" route she should entagle him or at least be in a position where she could apply pressure to stop him from going forward.

I have some propositions, based also on reference online http://bfy(dot)tw/C2Ls :

- grab under his pecks in a wide hug and connect with other hand in the centre of a chest just below

- hand goes in the centre of the chest, resting behind the material and over naked skin, is partially obscured, it's curled a little

- hand grabs his boob/peck like you'd grab woman, place her other hand on his hip/just above it

- hand grabs his shoulder tightly

I'd also adjust her position, as you have drawn her she seems distanced too much from him, should be "glued" a lot closer to him. Remember to give detail to where her chin touches his shoulder, also around fingers and palm because it will be biggest carrier of expression in this piece.

Tweak her position generally, I'm also not convinced her head would be straight like that and placed in that area.

I personally am for her hand to grab his shoulder because with this you can also interlock her hand with his biceps and girls seem to like to do that, feel the manly hand etc.

Rendering is far too stark in the nasal area. It seems as though you're using gray/black to darken there, when you ought to be using darker tones of the same colour. Unless you're going for some weird eyeshadow thing, but then why are her eyelids so light? Also, I don't see why you extended the shading so far beyond her nostrils; shading is supposed to communicate the depth and form of the subject, so I recommend you give a bit more thought as to what form you're trying to communicate in the naso-labial area. It's getting darker the closer one gets to the tip of her nose, when it should actually be catching more light than the bridge.

If you didn't expect someone you know to draw then that would be good it's full of wobbly proportions/perspective. You seem to have the right idea of shading it out first and getting the overall perspective and proportions right though.

Just some ideas. The back engines look too detached. Maybe try some thin black outline on some of it. And try to add some strong shadows to ground it, it's easy, fast and can add a lot if done right.

I wrote two posts accompanied by a visual demonstration. Those two combined carry some information intended for the author of the original illustration, which, judging by his/her response was of some use to them. If you were interested in drawing, you'd understand. Seems to me you're more of a writing kind of guy, so I can see how that could confuse you.

No rules, just tools. The goal is to achieve a certain look and if you found a way to achieve that look then it isn't a wrong way to do it to use pressure sensitivity. Just practice to play around with it and you will find different ways to reach the same result.

These are both interesting because they would improve immensely from just a tiny bit of studying. Just look at a real person wearing a clothing and draw them, analyze how the folds work and shit. It's not just a bunch of random squiggles, there's a rhyme and a reason to the way cloth will bunch up. I'm not saying it has to be realistic since that's obviously not the style you're going for, but in order to stylize convincingly you need to know how things work at a surface level, at least.

Oh I'm glad you posted this again, I wanted to ask for your blog right when I saw the sketch.

The coloring is good, but not very expressive, almost as if you wanted to make the scene feel cold and non intimate. Maybe a bit less contrast in the background and some more interesting light setup could help?
Like a dimmer, more diffused light, fluorescent light reflections on the white board to add depth, or even a warm light from late afternoon sun coming from a window (maybe left off-screen) - ya know, to make it seem like it's after class when others have gone home, but not this little cutie.

Anyways, love it, you post your work anywhere?

>>2998363
He didn't do a superb work, but it definitely isn't worse. The hard edges aren't used correctly, true, but he managed to lock the focal point on her shoulder, which is something the painting desperately needed.
A balance between hard and soft edges is a valid point.

Haven't drawn in a few months. Trying to get back into it. Currently drawing one of my old characters from some years ago.

I dig the attempt at making it 3d and actually minding forms. However, your linework needs some serious work, and I'd concentrate on it more to get rid of that chicken scratch.

I agree. My linework needs some major improvement.

It looks like you've drawn multiple pieces of her on a straight on perspective (especially the face) and then just squished them together in an attempt to show a worms eye view. Try to understand how the forms change shape and which areas become visible/not as the body tilts backwards for a lower viewing point.

Some of the proportions around the arms/torso seem off? Also the foreshortening of her forearm needs work

I think there is too much white to have a really good sense of the colours. Colour requires context. Try filling in the negative space with a place holder colour or something while painting if you're dead set on having the white background.

Has a few problems but the most glaringly obvious is the hands - could definitely benefit from some work. Try studying some hand anatomy for a while then come back to it

Covering the character in clothing/armor doesnt make anatomy issues acceptable, you should be trying to fix them regardless. Also, it helps you learn so why not! Regarding the perspective, it looks very straight on at the moment, adding a ground plain will likely help you visualize it. Think about how the forms stack on top of each other and look from the top, and also think about how the forms will hide pieces of the body underneath them.

I see, thanks, I always thought that you would need to use it and thats another thing that deterred me from scenes like that. It seems like it could be really tedious.
It looks really nice, I think its the color palette that makes it really lovely. The gestural paint strokes are nice too.

I'm so confused. I was the person to say that you made it worse, you responded that I was beyond help. I was not the person who drew the image.
Now you guys are both talking and I don't know which one of you is the asshole who thought I was beyond help.

The person who fixed it did over correct and made him look like, ugly and bird eyed with his eyes too close together.
I was looking at it on my phone screen though and after see it on the web I think that in the original picture the eye was slid over a little too much to the left.

>(Anon A): hey guy, you should fix your picture this way
>(Anon B): actually this way is incorrect
>(You): hey (Anon B) stop being mean ;_;

You're an overly sensitive faggot. If you can't deal with the idea that your shitty critique will be criticized, then you really need to grow some thicker skin. And a real artist won't be demotivated by some criticism; only casuals who aren't passionate about improving will leave because of it. And this kind of loss would make /ic/ a better place.

I like your idea but I made a few tasteful changes that I think really resonate with people
