I'm pretty sure the guy proudly declared he doesn't use reference like it's something to be proud of, which also explains why he hasn't improved in like two years. He just thinks too highly of himself and evidently refuses to do anything but repeat the same shit from imagination day after day between shitpost sessions. I've never seen anything by him that looks remotely finished or like he challenged himself, he just doodles the same crap.

I always use reference, but I rarely copy. I'll often review a good painting done by a good artist and try to apply the principles of that painting to a similar but ultimately quite different painting.

Kinda like what Miles Johnston did in his submissions about getting the most out of references.

All it means is you're wasting a majority of your time reinventing the wheel.

I guarantee you that an imagination drawing followed by a referenced study and then a second imagination drawing would do you much more good than 6 different imagination drawings where you just iterate on the same mistakes. You're hardly making any effort to understand your subject, just repeating the same shit over and over again day after day. I honestly can hardly tell the difference between the shit you're posting in this thread and the stuff I saw you posting a year ago, so as far as I can tell literally all you're doing is hammering in the same habits. Perhaps every now and then you'll accidentally do something right, but it's so stupidly inefficient that I don't know why you'd do it that way.

I do studies from reference but when actually painting a piece somehow there's a lot of guilt involved if I have to dig some up? it feels like cheating so I avoid it, but at the same time it's crippling...

One note id like to put in is that i want to reach pro level yes, but im never gonna be a pro illustrator. The payscale is too limited its really not worth my time. id like to draw a comic eventually, and even then i highly doubt ill drive that into a career even assuming high amounts of success.
